First post! Elite with Oculus Rift S.

I started VR with a Rift CV1, a 4690k i5 and a GTX970, which was enough, to play Elite in low to medium settings. You are totally fine to join the club. Just don't expect to play games with maxed out settings.
I never regretted a single cent, that i spent on VR so far. Its definitely the ultimate game changer for me. Go for it :)

Edit: 49 here and be prepared to get the wows like being a kid again... No joke, playing games in VR is absolutely stunning.

Cheers, I'm sold - Rifts S ordered, and arriving tonight - Who needs sleep anyway :)

Believe it or not, it was trying it in anaglyph that sold me in the first place, I was surprised how good that looked, considering it's black and white, and wearing cardboard glasses.

cant wait for 'Real' 3d :)

EDIT: Yes getting used to lower settings may take a little while, but Im sure the 3d will more than make up for it.
My 1060 currently manages 2560x1440 at ultra (with a few things toned down, probs bloom or similar) and manages a steady 60fpsm which is pretty damn good.

I can feel a new graphics card burning a hole in my wallet in teh not too distant future - but 1 step at a time

To echo Frank_G, I started off with an i5 4670k & GTX 1060 6Gb with a Rift CV1 and it was perfectly fine with lowered settings. Your i7 should give you better performance as VR likes the hyperthreading :)

VR was one of my paradigm-shift moments with computer games - first when I saw Space Invaders at an arcade, then when I saw 16bit graphics on the back of a game box and thought it was a painting, then the move to fast textured 3D (Wipeout on the PlayStation, thought it was “streaming” like a laserdisc before my mate pulled a 360 on the track), then the full immersion of VR when I plonked a Rift on my head.

Congratulations! Feel free to ask, when you are having problems with the setup. There are a few tricks to know, to get into VR Elite the fiirst time.

Cheers,
will do - can't wait

it's the last few days of my holiday (got a beer festival tomorrow), but the rest of the weekend is mine, so I may be posting at odd hours with setup questions.

Thanks all for the advice / info

Oculus set up and running - WOW !!!!!

Consider me totally blown away - I can never go back to 2d games again!
The startup into Rift - with the little robot is stunning (and quite cute), ED - is jus mind blowing, you really are IN the spaceship.
Only had an hour so far, but what an amazing game.
I can already feel a new graphics card coming on, just need to consult the bank account :)

A Totally VR newbie question, is there a VR web browser built in, or can you only use your virtual desktop one?

Thanks to everyone for talking me into this - well worth the splash of cash.

my Commander name Tiger L.I.V.R, now lives up to its name (Lost In Virtual Reality) - who needs sleep.

next newbie question - how do I rest where I am within VR - I am currently sat too far forward in the SRV, and need to 'moe back', without physically moving my chair etc :)

Any help most appreciated

You’ll need to rebind the “reset view” button to something handy - I think the default is f12.

I can’t help on the browser thing, I know there’s an Oculus desktop way of doing it with an Oculus store installation of Elite, but that advice is better coming from someone who’s done it.

As for hardware upgrades - I was the same, haha. More performance! In the last year I’ve pretty much built a new computer, with only the storage drives, mouse, keyboard and PC case surviving the upgrade-a-thon :)

Also, I heartily recommend “maintain horizon” for the SRV comfort settings, for the sake of your most recent meal.

Cheers for the advice, I'll try the maintain horizon thingy now - the SRV can get a bit lively!

Ive been playing this for >3hrs, and it only seems like minutes, you get so immersed - it's damn excellent.
'think I may have a late night tonight.

I've a horrible feeling the case will be my only original component by the end of the year. I thought my machine was quite high spec - until now :)

At first congratulations and welcome to the league of VR pilots. We´ve all been there and most of us will never go back to a flat screen for sure :).

I guess, you will have set your "Reset HMD orientation" key by now, as it was suggested. It is sometimes necessary to re-adjust during the game, especially, when switching between ship and SRV.

The SRV can be quite challenging for head and stomach first, but may i suggest, to just train yourself? If you get dizzy, just stop playing for a while. The feeling will get away over the coming days. Took me a couple of weeks (2 or 3) to train myself. Do not try to fight through, that wont work. Instead it will train you, to reject VR from minute one, as some have experienced it here on the forums as well - and there is no way back from that. Approach it carefully and without haste and you will feel home in the Rift sooner than later, regardless of which game you play. The cam adjustment is just a nice help-thingie, but other VR apps might lack it, which might make am unplayable to you. Better get used to the things without help-mechanics. Drive slowly during your first sessions.

Congratulations on joining the players doing Elite the right way. lol. Everyone has different tolerance for vertigo/motion sickness. In general, you do get used to it as time goes by. If not, you can do a few things in the VR settings that might increase your comfort level. But mostly, it gets better as you get used to it.

As to system specs, I've never had an issue even with slightly older cards. I first started playing in VR with my DK2 way back in the day, using a 780ti. No performance issues there, the only issue was reading the text with the DK2, lol. Upgraded to a CV, and still had no trouble with maxed VR settings while still using the 780 (which was technically below OR's minimum requirements, but still actually worked just fine). Now I use a 1060. Recently upgraded to a Rift S, and the graphics are sharper yet, with no noticeable performance decline despite the higher res.

People I think overestimate what kind of hardware you really need to play games like this well. Though VR is way more demanding on your graphics card, GPU is actually very rarely the bottleneck for performance issues with most modern games. You're better off putting your money into a high end CPU if you're planning on doing upgrades. You'll usually have no problem with a GPU that is merely decent instead of outrageously costly.

My reflections on VR, after 48 hours:-

  • . The whole experience is well worth spending the cash on -
    • it's a totally new game in VR - Stars (suns) are massive, planets look real, being able to look around your cockpit is great.
    • I wasn't overly hooked on space legs, but can now see why people want them
    • You feel like you are really in your ship, rather than just flying it in a game.
  • I was initially worried about my machine spec, but thanks to Frank_G, Arioch and others, I took the plunge
    • My machine spec is easily up to an enjoyable experience (spec below)
      • CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K (4 cores 8HT) - 4GHz
      • GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB
        RAM: DDR3 1600 C9 2x8GB
SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500G (Running in 'Rapid Mode')
      • Motherboard: Asus Z97-A, with some tuning in bios, set for 'Gaming mode'
    • I'm running on VR Ultra, using this spec - although I am currently out in deep space, and only landing on planets with no settlements, but all looks good so far
    • I suspect I may have to drop down to a lower setting, when docking at stations / planets, we shall see :)
  • Take Frank_G's advice, and train yourself into using VR, i.e. get used to it.
    • Ive been lucky, and haven't had any motion sickness issues, although I did have a weird sense of my hands not belonging to me (when out of VR :). )
  • Program a Reset HMD Orientation button
    • Ive not had to use the button often, and haven't experienced some of the issues others have mentioned re orientation suddenly jumping.
    • Keep your controllers in front of your S, and orientation seldom seems to go wrong
  • If you wear glasses for everyday, and others for screen use, I've found that the best experience is gained using my everyday use ones (suppose it's coz, we're not looking at a screen as such, but objects placed at certain distances?)
  • Be prepared to lose large chunks of your life :)
  • Lock your wallet away - this is an addictive hobby, and there is always a new level of detail you can run the game at - ie new Graphics Card, processor, HMD .....
  • If you have any questions, ask the community, they are a great bunch of people, and most of them don't bite.

Thanks to all for the advice given so far, I'm sure I'll have more questions, but so far, loving every minute of it - I just need to get used to seeing my own 'real' hands again, and accepting they are mine :)

TLDR; It's great, go and buy one!

Cheers,
Nick (CMDR Tiger L.I.V.R.)

I'm afraid that last night my wallet was attacked, and I bought an MSI RTX2060 Super OC .
No holidays for me this year.

Performance is much better than 1060 (which was damn good BTW), my VR 'home' is now defaulting to HIGH, with Anti Aliasing on as well.
Everything feels snappier.

ED looks even better than it already did - I'm still experimenting with how far I can push it - current weather conditions not helping, as it's 30 degrees in my Office, which I'm sure won't help
Once it cools down a bit, I'll post some settings that run well.

How do you get FPS to display whilst in VR Mode ?

Cheers,
Nick

You can use ctrl-F to display the FPS on your monitor, but that doesn’t show up in the headset.

You could use the Oculus Debug Tool (located Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics\) where you can select a Visible HUD which will give you all sorts of info in your HMD. I think it’s the “performance” HUD you’ll want, it lets you see how much headroom you’ve got to squeeze out some extra graphics :)

“Application Render Timing” will tell you the frame rate, but all that’ll show is either 80Hz if everything is fine, or 40Hz if ASW is kicking in (unless you switch off ASW, of course).

sounds like what I was after - although - I don't have any frame rates form the 1060 to compare with - but hopefully will at least be able to post some for the RTX2060 Super OC

Too damn hot tonight to do anything -> my office / games room is currently 32 degrees, so will try in next few days or so

I use a Xbox 360 gamepad which has a good default set of bindings, might be worth thinking about as it’s got a few more buttons than the Touch controllers.

I have created a keybinds file that includes the HCS Voicepack controles AND the XBox controler mappings, if you wnt a copy.?

Thanks for the offer, but I’m a complete Philistine who doesn’t use voice attack.

Every function is covered by the 360 pad and the muscle memory is there now for all the key combinations. Also, I always totally mean to lower the landing gear in outer space when trying to open the cargo scoop :)
