First week with Oculus DK2

wow

i have spent the last week being continually stunned and awestruck from flying around stations, asteroids, planets. i just cant stop taking off and landing. i keep shooting out of the station and re-requesting to land so i have another 10 mins to gawk.

Sitting in the cockpit of your sidey and wanting so desperately to reach up and grab the handle on the roof. gawking down through the glass cockpit panels of your ASP and finally understanding why the hell FD put smearing on the glass. looking really closely at how the various struts form up the ASP cockpit. looking down through the bottom panel of the ASP while taking off and feeling your lunch knocking on your door. rotating the joystick and watching the station (whole world) rotate under you. seeing all the detail in the stations outside of the yellow trucks that drive endlessly around a loop. there are shipping containers, buildings, conveyor belts all of these things pop out and make a living breathing organism

i know we will never fly to the stars in my life time, but punching out past sols light pollution and sitting on top of my ship in the dev cam was a moving experience. as i sit atop my ship and gaze around, the earth was the size of the moon, the pointers led me to the southern cross, and the milky way is a massive scattering of whirling clouds, billions of stars surrounded by familiar constellations. Orions nebula is just massive, i really must fly back out there now.

the eagle cockpit makes you feel like your in an F16, all the sides are buffed up with switches, the clipper is just pure class and when i jumped in my conda i was blown away looking back behind the pilot seat as you see just how big the bridge is. Landing just feels right all of a sudden... the landing nav is in 3D so you can see where your ship is and should be, it just makes sense with your brain. All the little details that you dont see on a monitor. still though, i do like the ASP, it has a sort of gritty, WW2 bomber feel to it. you can see the metal!!! i just want to wear a scarf and leather jacket. how good is the jump tunnel, i keep looking outside when jumping between stars. i do like doing loop to loops, you see these smoke trails everywhere and suddenly your brain realises, they are your own and this exactly where you just came from.

i keep moving my body around so the joystick and throttle hands line up with my body perfectly, its good fun messing with your brain. i just wish you could turn off those random wrist stretches the pilot does.

tracking a ship outside of your normal monitor boundaries in combat feels so incredible natural, its actually annoying to jump back in the sidey and have your lower half cockpit obscured. i haven't dared go back to a monitor, i just think it will make me cry

jumping into the a roid belt and having skyscrapper sized objects move slowly past you is like navigating monolithic icebergs in a dingy, you really feel small and squishy.

Cons
> the pixels have lots of black space around them, this leaves the overall picture looking washed out and a bit grainy SDE
> text is readable, just, no where near sharp enough though
> resolution is way too low. the ships in dog fights remind me of wing commander 1 a bit too much...
> far too much config is needed to get it working nicely

i give DK2 VR a 6/10. It's a low score but its a dev kit! and mainly because i know what the next 5 years will bring to VR... no SDE, resolution, tracking, comfort, auto setup etc, these will all get vastly better.

For gaming i give it a 10/10. its truly a ground breaking shift from monitors, cant get enough! bought my laptop into work just to show everyone. and this weeks LAN at my place will be a good test to see what my mates think.

Time to get Crysis 1 and Skyrim fired up and configured. Project cars was good, but the menus suck...

Can you supersample in game to 1.5 x?. If you can do this and hold good fps and change the hud to green, it literally goes up a few resolutions in the cabin. Outside of the cabin still not flash but ok.

assetto corsa FTW as well. (in racing land)

nothing beats ED and Assetto in the dk2. nothing i say!

Pcars just seems to lack something, cant put my finger on it.

but ED really hits the mark, you wait another few weeks till next update...hopefully* mind blown

green hud and super sample in game is a must. gtx 980+ for that in game super sample.
Nvidia DSR isnt bad, but not as good.
this will make things about 7x better inside the rift....

We're lucky to have these gadgets, as 95% of the people don't.

Had mine a few days.... if i had to describe it in one sentence, "its like strapping the Tardis to your face'. Seeing is believing.

Bit of advice for anyone thinking of trying one, dont unless you have the $$ to get one and horse powa to run one. Cos' you wont want one, you'll NEED one!
