ANNOUNCEMENT Fleet Carriers - Content Reveal Announcement

A simple question, Where is the fun in this?
A game should be fun and nothing you have to wait for ( 2 hours cd on jump) for 500 LY . In 2 hours i can jump 3000ly.
No way to earn credits to keep upkeep if you plan to explore.
Cant interact with NPC, so dependant on all other players, that will also have a carrier, if you want to earn some bucks.
Grinding alert.
And what do the carriers add to the game? Innovative game change? No
Just some more numbers to keep track of, packed in a box called carriers.

Absolutely right Not only do you have to fund exploration by yourself but it takes 20 times longer to get anywhere. The only bonus is having all your ships in one place. I suppose you could fill the hold with commodities like LTD's and when you get back to the bubble, sell at the most profitable station as you have no influence on the economy of that system

From the feedback supplied from FDEV it appears that you can set a route for the FC from your ship, so while you are exploring an area the FC can be catching up, that's not a problem for me, this is;

For example, explorers who have accrued large sums of cash, they'll be able to take a Fleet Carrier and ferry it out to the remote regions of the galaxy and explore never-before seen locations.

It appears, unlike mining, trading and combat, there's no way for an explorer to fund a ship while exploring, basically you need to provide enough funds for whatever length of exploration trip you are planning, which for explorers like myself who can be out for many months at a time simply means, no FC. Ideally I could set my FC up with a route across a region to a target and while it was making its slow way across to the target or the edge of the next region I could be jumping around exploring in my phantom, but upkeep and wear and tear costs make this a prohibitively expensive exercise for an explorer. I mean we don't even know if the returns from regular exploration will be enough to fund one or will you need to do high value exploration? I am just over 70kly on my current trip, I don't surface scan everything, I also don't filter star systems for potentially valuable system when exploring. An M class with 7 icy rocks, no problem, but it doesn't return a lot of value, and even if it does it appears I can't use that accumulated potential wealth until I get to a starport equipped with UC, and then what happens if I get destroyed while heading to sell my data, my entire trip earns me basically zero credit and potential loss of a FC.

It seems FC's have changed in ways that no longer suite them to exploration, they are now more a management system for players, requiring constant earning and attention. I have indeed played MMO's that use similar functionality for some features, I handle those simply by not taking part in that aspect of the game, so it looks like me and my trusty Phantom will be flying alone. I will still take part in the beta and give feedback in regards to my above concerns, so we will see what happens.

Depends on the TV and what it is connected to.

Nice 60 year old black and white 405 line set with an internet connection would be impressive.
I can literally set this up any time I want. Until I got my projector, my XBox One was hooked up via the HDMI-RCA adaptor to my bedroom TV. Not a major stretch to hook the RCA-out from that up to an RCA-Coax passthrough from my big box of AV kit, into the B&W TV my grandma gave me back in the early 90s when she upgraded to a colour one.

Challenge accepted.

My only issue is the warmup and cooldown is unrealistic, I can do Colonia in 4.5 hours with my Anaconda, with the carrier it will take near on 80+ hours, really disappointing to say the least, I like all the rest it offers, but as a exploration ship forget it.
Agreed, I would be interested in most of this if I could actually go places in a fleet carrier, 3 hours to do 2 jumps means this isn't much more than a station. And playing trading in a station isn't the ED I know and play, that's more like a corner shop simulation! Elite Absolutely Not Dangerous. For months we have been looking forward to loading all our ships and heading off to base ourselves at different locations and now that's not really realistic. Fleet carriers will encourage people to NOT sit at the monitor and play the game, they will set up their carrier in a place then switch off, there is nothing to watch, nothing to get excited about. I'm not sure switching back on the day after to find someone didn't buy a sidewinder is going to get me going. ED needs to bring out fleet carriers without this huge anchor that holds the heartbeat to a steady 60bpm.

EXPLORERS...bend over and take it, take it ALLL! The fleet carrier is not/was never meant for those of us who love being out in the black...period. No Stellar Cartographic to sell data, 2 jumps and GRIND for 1000 tons of Tritium then guess what...2 jumps and GRIND AGAIN, Weekly Maintenance cost with no way to generate significant income away from the bubble (because explores SELL CARTO DATA TO MAKE MONEY)...well, that pretty much kills it for me. I would have loved to be able go Star Trekkin across the galaxy with a few of my special purpose ships but given the current specs, I don't think it is feasible for me. I'm sure that there is at least one poor soul who will be the first to Beagle Point but sooner or later there will a few carriers in the "hot "systems and the cost of things will go crazy driving down the market to were it is more difficult to maintain the ship and crew. I'll try the beta but that will be it. I'm sad though, I love exploring in the upper half of the galaxy and when Explorers Anchorage came online, that was perfect. Can you imagine how long it will take to get a carrier to SAG A or Beagle Point? Just my opinion...Y'all have fun with those carrier things.

With so many negative comments, it would be interesting to see what a Dev response would be.

I don't think they were really designed to be for explorers, unfortunately.

Neither are they really intended for solo players, with the cost, upkeep, and facilities management that is necessary, unless you play a lot. No doubt some solo players could do it, but there sort of doesn't seem a lot of point, even then.

They're a very detailed and well put together mobile base of operations for squadrons and multi-player scenarios, by the looks of it.

This looks like a big step away from "all modes are equal" to me.

I'll see if they're playable in the Beta.

But one of the original loadouts was specifically for exploration, and frontier state on the latest release at the front of this forum that you will be able to take it out into the far reaches of the black to explore.
"Fleet Carriers provide new opportunities for expeditions and long-range travel,"

Greetings Commanders,

We're thrilled to announce that the first look at the upcoming Fleet Carrier update will be coming to your screens on Thursday, 2 April! Lead Server Developer, Dav Stott, and Game Designer, Luke Betterton, will join us on a special video to talk us through what these vast vessels are and how they'll be shaking up the galaxy!

Since the initial reveal of Fleet Carriers, we've examined the concept of predefined load-outs and decided to invest additional time to ensure that fleet carriers offer the same level of flexibility and customization as other ships within Elite Dangerous. We've done this by adding more loadout options to make your carrier unique, and allow for player-to-player interaction like you've never seen before in Elite Dangerous!

Squirming in your cockpit chair wanting to know more details? Here is some key information on Fleet Carriers - but for the entire content reveal, tune in to our Pre-Recorded Stream on YouTube, on 2 April at 18:00 (UTC). Although we won't be live, our team will be there in the chat to answer any questions that you may have.

  • One of your most frequent questions about Fleet Carriers was: How much do they cost? Fleet Carriers will be a lucrative investment, costing 5,000,000,000cr at launch.
  • Fleet Carriers are individually owned and feature 16 landing pads (of varying sizes) for other players to dock at.
  • Fleet Carriers use a new fuel, Tritium, to jump from system to system.
  • Fleet Carriers have a max jump range of 500LY at one time, with the ability to jump whenever the owner wants, however, they will have a build up and cool down period between jumps.
  • You can manage your carrier's finances by setting tariffs and adjusting the buying and selling prices for commodities traded in it's market.
As it currently stands, we're aiming to launch the Fleet Carriers update in June and will be calling all commanders to experience Fleet Carriers (as both visitors and owners) in two upcoming public betas before the update is live! The first beta will begin on 7 April for PC only, and the second beta which will be launched on PC, Xbox and PlayStation, will take place in May. Please note that there is a chance that these time frames may change slightly in the coming weeks, but we'll keep you up to date on the specific times, dates and instructions.

See you there, Commanders.

If you send the fleet carrier 500ly away, but forget to be on-board when it jumps, do you have to go out to catch it up?

Well, I was hoping to be able to do something with these but obviously it's for the 1% of players that will ever amass enough credits to (1) buy one and (2) pay for it's ongoing upkeep.

Very dissappointing.

If you send the fleet carrier 500ly away, but forget to be on-board when it jumps, do you have to go out to catch it up?
You should not have any issues trying to "Catch Up" with the carrier. Given the new fuel requirements, the carrier can jump at most 1000ly before it has to stop for a GRIND of 1000 tons of Tritium. This should provide you enough time to jump into the same system. Even if you ship only has a 50ly range, it should only take you 20-25 jumps and you will be with them.

Do we need to sign up for the console beta? How do we join it?

I am a console player. I mainly play solo due to lack of friends and I cant afford a gold pass right now. Will other xbox players be able to access my carrier and its services if I dont have a gold pass?
