Flight Model Abuse? Opening cargo scoop lets you brake and perform instant 180.

I've just tested this in an Asp. Observations...

1. In FA OFF mode, Cargo Scoop deployment DOES slow you down to 50% max normal speed, but very slowly. See (2).

2. In FA ON mode, Slowing down to 50% using throttle took 10 sec, whereas doing it via Cargo Scoop deployment took 30+ seconds.

3. "Blue Zone" is 50% throttle, irrespective of anything else. So, with cargo scoop out, your max speed is reduced... but "blue zone" speed is half that again. So you'd need to be at 50% of max "cargo scoop open" speed to pitch fastest.

If someone has some hard evidence of shenanigans... perhaps in another ship... please upload it. I don't see the remotest problem in my Asp, in its current config.

That sounds right. Did you test cutting throttle to 50% and deploying CS, to then retract CS when speed has dropped? If the effects of throttling back and deploying CS are compounded then it's a bug. (I would but I'm AFK, as it were, until tomorrow)

This is about what you'd expect. By deploying the CS you're slowing down from over maximum throttle the same way you do after a boost. If you throttle down instead, your engine actively fights your forward velocity to bring you down to the speed you've selected on the throttle. Especially noticeable in the Asp with the frontal drive plumes reaching into your field of view.

Awww snap, incoming hot discussion

Edit: alright seriously, this trick really undermines the maneuverability advantage of Vipers when fighting against Asps, Cobras and Pythons. Viper's extremely good acceleration and deceleration is now available to all those large ships, and they have superior turn rates at optimal speed.

To balance this I suggest making cargo scoop deployment disable shields like in FFE.

Great idea - how it should be! Dropping scoop drops shields - will help the pirate/trader escape rate to - or show us who really is a murderous dog! But thats for a different thread :)

FD please make shields drop when scooping - scooping should after all be risky huh!

I suspect this could be "easily" fixed by narrowing down the slow down feature to a certain range from targeted cannisters. Much like the landing gear should be restricted to a limited range from stations and outposts.

Using the cargo scoop should require you to drop shields anyway. How does the canister mysteriously pass through the shield?
