Flight Simulator 2020 vs. Elite Dangerous

Aye, there is no way I`m going to buy a full game, then invest large amount of my gaming budget for eventual addons just to have the entire thing not working every time my connection goes offline. My loss I guess, but no thanks.
Are you talking about FS2020 or ED? ;)

At least ED is low bandwidth in Solo. My problem isn't internet reliability, it's bandwidth caps. I go from DSL speed, which is fine for most online games I play, to dialup speed if / when I hit that cap on a monthly basis. I can still play ED in Solo fairly reliably even at dialup speed. My other games like Overwatch get shelved until the cap resets the first week of a new month.

If (and I'm still skeptical about this) FS2020 is a Stadia hybrid of sorts where it's streaming high bandwidth textures and geometry (or worse, the 'movie' outside the cockpit), then that's a deal-breaker for me. Someday when Elon gets his satellites working or I move back to the big city with fiber Internet, then maybe.

Personally, I hope you are all wrong about this high-bandwidth streaming requirement.

X-Plane 11 still beats them all in the sim department. The graphics in MFS 2020 are absolutely drop dead gorgeous though, will be a buy from me for sure, even if as a sim is not as good as X-Plane.

XPlane is definitely the best of the bunch at the moment but it's biggest drawback is it's balance of optimisation between CPU and graphics. It still needs a pretty high spec machine to get to 30+ FPS with any payware aircraft and scenery. Hopefully that will change when the engine changes to Vulcan.

P3D (my biggest regret purchase) has stood still for so long there's no chance of it catching up. Over the next 18 months (depending on how XP and FS2020 pan out) I reckon there will be an awful lot P3D evanglists (and streamers) switching sides and leaving P3D in everyones rear view mirror. The question is, will it be to XP or FS2020? :)

As am I...living where I do, decent net speeds are an unknown luxury :(

I really hope they load location data and not constant streaming because in that case it's a definite no-go since i would block the internet for everyone else at home.

BTW, do we know if FS2020 will play on XB1X? I've been tempted by this box for ED, but I don't want to get it solely for ED.

If so, I wonder if Microsoft plans support for more input devices / HOTAS..

It says it is coming to Xbox One and PC, dont know much about the xbox stuff so I dont know if that includes the XB1X but it says 2020 for the XBoxOne for what that is worth.

Okay, I wasn't sure if it was only for the new XBox Scorpio or not.

Regarding FS2020 being online, yes it streams satellite imagery from Azure to be used for the scenery (photogrammetry), but Microsoft has also confirmed there will be an offline mode as well, so its very likely the sim will allow areas or regions to be pre-downloaded allowing offline flying.

Now, as to missions for FS2020 or even current FSX / P3D, look up a client side app called Flight Sim Economy (FSE). It basically turns flight simulator into something like American Truck Simulator, and yes it is AWESOME. I've been flying sims in FSE for over ten years now and it's amazing.

The FS2020 Insider website opened up yesterday with a few incredible pics and videos. This new sim looks astoundingly beautiful.

Speaking of FSX, I own a copy, just not a PC that will run it. That might change this fall. How does FSX hold up to today's standards? I suspect there are mods that make it look pretty good. Obviously it won't be as good as FS2020 (nor as realistic, scenery-wise), but I'm not terribly fussy.

Oh, and has anyone created flyable ED ships in FSX? If not, that's on my bucket list!

FSX is quite old (15 years), and the flight dynamics are very sub-par nowadays. It is still playable, but no longer up to current standards.

Do yourself a favor if you can and get X-Plane 11 which is much better on all accounts, not just as a flight sim, but also in graphics and terrain. You get the whole world to fly in, the best flight dynamics available now, detailed 3D interactive cockpits, very good scenery and excellent HOTAS support. It also has a huge community providing loads of mods, from loads of extra aircraft, to scenery packs.

It's a bit on the expensive side though, but totally worth it if you enjoy flight sims.

I have a pretty powerful PC but XP11 is nearly unplayable for me due to abysmal performance lately. I can run every title/sim no issues but XP11 and I`m not the only one. So be sure your hardware is up to the task :)

Have you installed many extras? Also check your graphics options, there are some detail sliders (like the "world objects" slider) that you should start on the medium, lowish end and then start increasing if the machine can still cope.

Actually not even one, it use to run pretty okish, then I took over a three months brake. Installed it few days ago and it runs like a wet dog now. Could it be some update? Also, yeah I can dump down my graphic settings to make it run smooth, but it looks like FS2004 :(

There was a recent(ish) update that added even more airports, and the new free official scenery packs (but those are downloaded separatly), although that shouldn't have so much of an impact.
