You're both right! In the original ED there was no standard left or right for the mailslot, and a vocal majority used the red/green system to avoid collisions. Around 1.2, this was implemented as a rule which NPCs use to avoid unnecessary collisions. The actually leave in the centre, but side-thrust to their "green" side, or your "red" side as they exit when you approach. It's quite cool to watch. When it works. Watching a T9 failing to do this is like watching a Director's Cut of Free Willy with the sad ending.

Then why are the signs always upside down on the sides we're supposed to enter/exit?

Keep the green to starboard (right) and the signs will always be the correct way up![]()
