Focus on bugfixes

Can we get a fiscal quarter focused on bugfixes and not on new content? So many little things are still broken in this game that are adding up to make it very frustrating to play.

  • Concord cannon still has the overcharged reload bug. The issue even got marked as fixed in the issue tracker, even though its clearly not.
  • Carrier shipyard stock is broken for some presets (I checked Multirole Advanced and Combat Advanced)
  • Titan drive components disappeared from being able to be listed in carrier commodity markets
  • The carrier bartender is still broken when listing materials
And thats just stuff that has affected me as a casual player. I am sure there are significantly more legacy bugs lingering.

AA bug

Lighting Bug

Pirate Bug (ship coming to life after knocking out it's engines (+2 cmdrs only)

Powerplay mats reward Bug

Concord cannon (they said it was fixed!)

Few (3-4) days ago first time installed Concord Cannons (OC + autoloader) and have no problem with rearming nor autoloading. Would advice to re-install problematic CC to "reset" those.

Another bug:

Crask Site / Impact Site: Satellite panels don't fall down when cutting them with the arc cutter. They just simply move a bit and stuck. Then no interaction possible. (tried shooting , pushing etc ) Log out / Log in does not help. Also tried cutting from different directions / different order of edges )

This bug blocks the salvage mission completion. ( Eg: "get the electromagnet from a crash site")

This is happening only on planets with gravity > 1.

The bug is when you have overcharged without autoloader or when you are almost out of ammo.
Obviously you have not encountered it. Your advise will not fix it.

An infamous 'open letter' urged FD to spend a year fixing bugs and nothing else.
Naturally they accepted such a great suggestion.
A few bugs were fixed in that year, but the majority survived even until today.

The 'fixes' listed in each update are not dreadful, although I am certain that many of people's favourite bugs remain unaddressed, Suggesting they stop their good work to fix a few extra bugs isn't a terrible idea, but may not have the desired results in removing specific bugs that individual players deem in urgent need of fumigating.

There are only six open bugs predating that year.

- 190: Ammonia World atmospheric composition (not actually a bug)
- 191: frame of reference problems with installations which run away
- 683: widescreen map problems (fixed in Odyssey)
- 11902: supergiant map display issues (noted as probably fixed, not closed because Frontier are disorganised, no new reports since 2020)
- 11923: issue with NPC voices when combining NPC fighter pilots with multicrew players
- 12237: Ram Tah logs don't appear in Codex

So that's two fixed, one which was never a bug in the first place, and only three that should still be open (191 being the big one, of course)

(And obviously thousands of bugs which were too niche to make it through the bug tracker)

Was that when immediately after the first update of the year the forums erupted in protest at the lack of new stuff?

My sentiment is more like what Helldivers 2 went through last year at this time. Where a lot of the gameplay needed balancing and refinement.
So its more like, fix their bugs, but also fix some of the gameplay as well.

Stuff like making the coop experience better, ground missions refinement, more reliable endgame activities, etc.

Wait, I don’t understand. FD made a website for players to report bugs. Then the website will automatically retire a bug report that isn’t confirmed by a number of other players within a short time, after which, it remains existing forever unless they suddenly decide to fix it for an unknown reason, see below. This is probably because, you know, they asked people to report bugs, but they can’t possibly prioritize reviewing all of them or actually fixing all of them. If a bug is sufficiently confirmed, FD then wants players to vote on the bugs that they most want addressed, because of course they can’t possibly address all of these confirmed bugs either. But an individual player can only vote for a small number of bugs, because of above, if players could have unlimited votes, everyone could vote on all bug reports; and they would be back to where this story started. And we can’t have that. But that’s what makes this such a great system. Then FD only rarely address bugs in updates, and frequently choose bugs that don’t have the most votes, or bugs that they consider very important, regardless of confirmation or number of votes. Frequently, bug “fixes” don’t completely address the bug. Also, frequently a bug fix will breake something else, and the new problem often seems to players as completely unrelated to the original bug. Actually, never mind, I think I do understand.

Indeed. The purpose of the bug tracker is to ensure that only the most significant bugs actually get reported.

Despite everything it's failing at that - after years of the overall open confirmed bug total sitting in the 125-175 range as new reports were balanced by fixes, the increased player numbers recently have managed to push it up to almost 225.

I expect an increase in the confirmations requirement to 20 and the introduction of a new "requires specific undocumented browser settings" bug to it will be necessary soon.
