For the 'young uns' The slot and the Blue Danube

In another thread about ship names, I said one of my three Pythons was called the 'Pan-Am'. This is due to the ship kit parts I stuck on it. It then occurred to me that a lot of people would be too young to get the reference, and how it links to Elite. It then occurred to me that those same folks may not have any idea where 'the slot' and the docking computer music (By the beautiful blue Danube) come from.

Let's fix that. Let's go back to time before Star Wars, and see some of the inspiration for Elite.

So you didn't call it the "OrionIII" (or later numeral) then?

I thought Pan-Am was a bit more obvious (within it's obscurity).

As a young child I used to have a model of the Orion III. I loved it.

I believe that ED has its roots in E&B.
The reason I play ED is because it reminds me of E&B, which was a cool game for its time.

They had a number of film tricks to show Zero G.
The pen is stuck to a huge rotating pane of glass.
They rotated whole corridors so that the velcro footed hostesses could walk on the ceiling.
They show Mr Floyd sucking his food through a straw. (although the liquid slips back down the straw)
And the famous Zero G toilet:

I suggest that this is not so much Kubrik's vision for "necessary hair containment" as it is a technical limitation of filming a woman with long hair on Earth so as to look like it's in Zero G.

While DNA-Decay is triggered by the snark about hair, I'm triggered by that damn movie. My parents made me watch 2001 as a kid, and that wormhole bit that lasted an eon nearly drove me insane. Still sets my teeth on edge.

There, CMDR Liqua, I tend to slightly disagree. You can hardly blame Stan Kubrick on that one, The blue Danube was not widely used before his use of the piece in this movie. The scene is rightfully classic and spot on ( Thx CMDR Saool

) and inspired others after that. The movie was impressively done for its time, and remains a deservedly remains a top watch sci-fi movie today. So many scenes have become "Classics".

I think that instructors after him have used the music exactly to convey the impressions induced in 2001.
And there I agree, it's too bad that cannot themselves create such an experience.
It was a stroke of genius that the original Elite used the piece while docking, and E: D has thankfully not changed this

I'll grant you that it's a seminal film. HAL, the obelisk, the star-child, all these things influence science fiction films to this day. But that wormhole scene has no adequate defense.

I think it may have been little earlier than that. E&B was 2002. The original Elite (with the 2001 inspired rotating docking) was published in 1984.

If there is one thing in Elite that needs a buff, its the docking music. I think it should be station dependant - Blade Runner Soundtrack for Hi Tech, Rammstein for Industrial, and of course, a Male Voice Choir bringing you in to a mining station with an aural cwtch...

Any others?
