For those seeking answers why David was keen to release ED as bare minimum - read this

Agreed.
It's a shame they're focusing on things like the heat mechanic instead of fixing bugs, optimization, and improving mechanics.
Adding more punishment to already punitive mechanics isn't an improvement. It's sadism.
Mining? Still the most tedious chasing-goldfish-food punitive task in the game.
Exploration? Buggy as all hell, not as advertised, discovery credits granted for pinging, NPCs 400LY out with no fuel scoops, "first discovered by" showing up, but you can't buy the exploration data for that system. No indication on the galaxy map that a system has already been discovered, so you get to waste your time for nothing, if that's your goal. Not even close to internally consistent.
Combat? Fundamentally changed so much in 1.1, not even remotely comparable to all of alpha, beta, gamma, or 1.0 post launch.
Trading? Broken on February 3, 2015, with not a single comment from any developer that it was intentionally broken, how they're going to fix it, or why they did it the first place. Zero communication.

It's like they're reading chapter and verse out of The Big Book Of Fail with a blindfold on the driver of the bus.

It's a no brainer really...

He's not gonna do an interview that's gonna be read by thousands of potential buyers and say

"yeah, we screwed up, we released too early. It's still a beta to be honest. Mining is broken, our missions are repetitive, super cruise is boring and the whole game is basically one long repitive grind.... Why don't you come buy it?"

He wants to sell the game, so he will make it sound as good as he can.

It's all about the £££££££ baby!

No it doesnt. Lets see the challenge again:

Failed to deliver... Says who? Please show the court statement declaring Braben failed to deliver.

We ve probably gone through this before. A text from someone who "now only remains anonymous" in a iancgbell.clara.net site is hardly "evidence". Not only that, and more to the point, that "text" would be just a contestable summons at best: So I ll ask again, can you please show an actual court final and uncontested statement release on the matter?

Take your time.

In the mean time I may aswell have to continue thinking that that piece of text is as clear cut or as definitive as the ones claiming there was a counter suit settling the affair to Braben´s satisfaction:

http://web.archive.org/web/20070702190542/http://www.frontier.co.uk/press/release/gampress.html

Getting the largest failed kickstarter in the UK ...

Being actually the largest so far does not strike precisely as a "fail" proposition.

...and having to refund backers to stay out of court.

FDEV seems to have also denied refunds aswell I am afraid. Either way, where is the actual legal action? Otherwise the rest of your statement seems to simply be gratuitous speculation about the reasons why there is none.

As for financial backing, tell me how much ED has received since...

Ok, so have we then at least established that before launch financing was significant (including a UK kickstarter record) and that you were wrong to state "unlikely to get any financial backing again"?

I would rather get that out of the way first before continuing with the discussion about the next stage.

Not as far as I am concerned.

I feel these were interesting bits:

and this one:

For me that quote is so great, because it tells me they are going to do with stations what I was wishing for all along. Some of the stations will become much larger and more varied complexes.

I think that's what gets a lot of people. There are so many parts of this game that they've been wishing for all along that are yet to surface. I noticed the parts you quoted though and they were the parts they stood out for me in this interview because they could be great features.....just a matter of waiting to hear something concrete on them, then waiting some more for them to arrive.

I read that as "David seems not to have learned, having already produced 3 space games, that he should produce the space-simulator LAST, and the rest of the game first."

Are you actually saying they should have put the drapes up and the kitchen in before they build the foundations of the house?

Or are you saying someone else is saying that?

However is saying that... you're a dummy. :p

Oh for pete's sake we have some whinger about 'broken promises' in the thread. They're a disease here.

We need Sylvester Stallone to sort them out since he's, you know, the cure.

Done. Still waiting.

You'll be waiting a long time for "proof" since it's an out of court settlement, but it was widely reported in the press at the time to have gone against gametek. I remeber reading about it on the old gamespot and avault sites.

There was a press release at the time to the usenets (1999) - but the orginal source is long gone.
http://www.sslmit.unibo.it/zat/files/elite4/afe_E4news.htm

The press still mention it occasionally.

That makes you a dark knight in the eyes of the "defenders-no-matter-what". :) Anyway, I used both metaphors to show that "blind believers" are dying every day, and humour the way defenders jump on everyone, who has valid concern, even though the "attacker" likes the game and genuinely cares about it's well being. You know, as in, black or white, just two colours... no middle ground. I find this sectarian attitude quite funny and speaking-for-itself, when evaluating someone's objectivity.

As for the second bit: the interview is a fluid matter. I don't know if you've been interviewed in the past, but, it's decent to expect the interviewed to have the final say, as the full context is (presumably) only visible to him as he is the professional, and journalist is merely a journalist.. So, in many cases he gets to edit the final bit, crossing unnecessary stuff out, which is alright, I guess. Plus, it's in the journalist's best interest to pitch his sales by getting that valuable interview, or else the interviewed goes somewhere else with his interview. So, high ground for "the professional" here again.

It takes a very smart journalist to eat the cake and have it too, if you take my meaning.

mind=blown

What you're describing is called censorship.

Braben really needs to be grilled in the same way that Molyneux was grilled by RPS.

Tired of these softball interviews that are nothing but devs and 'journalists' patting each other on the back and enjoying the clicks revenue / game sales revenue.

Tough pro-consumer questions please.

I didn't ask for proof. Just evidence. If Braben really did sue Gametek, then why is it that the only court documentation found shows just Gametek suing Braben?

Agreed, nothing usefull in the article at all...
It doesn't matter David wants / intend / aspires.
What matters is what you do and the curent state of the game.

Not to try and drag that bone that you seem so fond of gnawing from your mouth, but every article I have read has stated, quite clearly, that Braben sued Gametek and that he won an out of court settlement. If this was not the case, surely someone in the legal profession would have sent a nicely worded letter saying "please don't keep saying that as it isn't true" or am I just being foolish?

I'm reading threads in alt newsgroups from 1998 and 1999 where everyone is sick of going over this old, cold, ground. Do we need to keep thrashing the bones of that dead beast?

It a while back, but I only remember it being settile in Frontiers favour. I don't remeber there ever being a counter suit mentioned in the press at the time, but the gaming press doesn't really follow court procedings closely.

Still waiting for your evidence to back your (and Braben's) claim Braben won against Gametek...

Lol, I am afraid you were the one claiming David Braben had not delivered in the first place for FFE so the burden of proof is on you my friend.

As for "my claim" I havent claimed anything at all, you are the only one who has. I compared other "texts" available out there with yours, and pointed out that all are equally poor as definitive evidence (although at least Braben´s release doesnt seem to be anonymous and refers to the end state, as opposed to your text which is anonymous, hosted in a biased site and does not discuss the end state at all).

And here again my response to your actual claim which you have not yet addressed at all:

A text from someone who "now only remains anonymous" in a iancgbell.clara.net site is hardly "evidence". Not only that, and more to the point, that "text" would be just a contestable summons at best: So I ll ask again, can you please show an actual court final and uncontested statement release on the matter?

Addressed in my quoted text above. Your original point was not about a court issue existing or not. I dont think anyone is ignoring the contentious between Gametek and Braben. Please dont make that a strawman to get away.

No. Your original statement baselessly and gratuitously established that David Braben hadnt delivered:

Braben failed to deliver his last space Sim game to its publisher...

So I ll ask a 3rd time, can you please show an actual court final and uncontested statement release on the matter? And not just some dodgey and anonymous contestable summons in an iancgbell site? As I have mentioned before, until then I have no reason to pay more heed to your "text" than to other texts actually pointing to Gametek possibly being the one having to compensate Braben in the end instead.

Take your time.

Weekly newsletters, devs that actually communicate with you on the forums and generally weekly patches (for now) that all are free, you guys don't know how good you got it.

I have played many games over my 50 years and devs usually only give complete silence until they want your money (expansions) then it is HYPE HYPE HYPE. I prefer this board to many I frequent due to the transparency here.

OT: the article only shows that some tidbits they keep to themselves, which is fair seeing as many mags want some kind of exclusive info to promote your product.

Only 30years here and totally agree, also I'm more than happy to play the game we have, with patience enough for a steady, paced development.
