For those who have used the Evil Space Witch's Mining Laser, is it any good for mining ?

Evil Space Witch Zemina Torval offers her followers access to the module known as the "MINING LANCE" after 4 weeks of loyal service and attaining powerplay rank#3.

This module has no use case in combat, but the extended range of the weapon may make it useful in mining certain difficult asteroids.

My concern is that this weapon has MUCH GREATER DISTRIBUTOR DRAW than the regular mining laser. Which may make it much less USEFUL for actual mining.

For those who have actually got experience of using this module, may I ask your opinion on its utility for ACTUAL MINING ?

But yes, this. There is no practical reason to get one when you could save up for core mining gear and mine and sell void opals to the extent you become a billionaire before this gets unlocked.

Capitalised Substance? whAT?

OT, the Mining Lance is the only PP gear I stocked up on but subsequently got rid of again due to its uselessness.

There were some videos by D2EA where he used it to save limpets by shooting rocks from a greater distance without spending any prospectors to confirm what the rock consisted of, but tbh just get a bigger ship and the need to save limpets goes away. And yes, the distro draw makes it even worse.

I've had a pair on my Type-9 miner since long ago. They are wonderful for that ship, as they fit the otherwise useless small hardpoints, and the increase range allows me to pre-prospect (chip a piece, see what it is, decide to spend a Prospector limpet or not) and start "pre-mining", using the extended range until within range of larger mining lasers, to greatly expedite the mining process.

Since the advent of 3.3 Mining, these remain useful for "pre-prospecting", and range-closing for non-core roids.

And they CAN be used in combat - ask the NPC in the Eagle that got nosy about what was in my cargo hold. Of course, this was more a matter of simply wanting to be able to say "Yes, I've killed something with a mining lance" than anything else, and he was in an Eagle. I could have simply rammed him to death, but being lanced seemed more fitting.

To borrow from Dr. Malcom: "Just because you CAN kill someone with a mining lance, doesn't mean you should."

You definitely should not.

The problem stems from the base module being a mining laser rather than a beam weapon- it can't be engineered and improved.
