Forced to go back to monitor

Hi all as the title suggests I've got to return to a monitor for a while

Live recently upgraded my motherboard to a Z97 p and an i5 4690k over locked to 4.5ghz but running at 3.5 stock coupled with my gtx 970 oc edition

I was running msi afterburner, temperature on my gpu was 51c
i scrolled down and to my horror noticed my cpu temperature was at 93c quickly switched of the game temps dropped back down to 60c

So I ran the game without the rift temps got to around 65c got into open space reconnected the rift
temps held ok till I docked temps shot back up to 90 so switched of again

I have got four case fans and cpu cooler which is a theraltake contac 21 means nothing to me but supposed to be OK for overclocking I've sent email to seller to find out what I can do so for now it's monitor time again feels so strange lol

Had my moan now lol should have stuck with my A8 6500

Intel recommend not to go over 100C but I've set a 90C alarm in my BIOS to be on the safe side (if you can call it safe). It goes off occasionally on my i7 4770k since I switched to 4k but then I only have a stock cooler.

Can anyone recommend a decent replacement cooler?

I took the plunge and went with a koolance/swiftech custom liquid loop and I'm super glad i did. there are air coolers out there that should do the job very well but if you can, go with the liquid loop. I swear i get much better performance now that my hardware temps are kept very low and my PC is virtually silent. I run my CPU at 4.6 full time (i7 3820)

if i had to guess I'd say you might have forgotten to add thermal paste or the cooler doesnt not have sufficient contact with the CPU.

It came all made up cooler motherboard all connected was supposed to be connect everything and away I go

If the temps are related to the GPU, why are you guys talking about CPUs???
Try a benchmark, like 3dmark or some stress benchmarks on the web

someone probably did something wrong in assymbly..it happens. take off your cooler and reapply the thermal paste. one dot/drop in the center of cpu and try your best to reinstall your cooler as flat as possible so the paste spreads evenly...or just send it back

That was my thinking send it back, might try and upgrade so I can sli 2 970 at a later date as the z97-p doesn't allow

Sorry,my mistake.
If you have warranty send it back, but applying thermal paste is not difficult.
Did you also try other monitoring softwares? like CPUZ HW monitoring?

Overclocked to 4.5ghz but running at 3.5ghz stock? I don't understand. I guess it's overclocked to 4.5ghz which would account for the temps if the cooler isn't sufficient or issue with fitting?

You haven't mentioned the cooler type.... Post some photos.

I'm running an old i5 2500k at 4.8ghz with liquid cooling. The cooling setup is all separate parts rather than a 2 piece kit. I built a PC for my nephew last year and fitted it with Swiftech 2 piece cpu cooler costing £65. It has a dual (360) rad so was a bargain at that price.

I also built a PC for a friend and upgraded his CPU to i5 4690k running at 4.4ghz with a big air cooler. Temps are way below 90c.

Just got a reply from vendor they say it's the nature of overclocked cpu to get hot but it's only running at stock 3.5 ghz at mo there going to ring me to explain in more detail but still seems hot to me it idles at 45c which also seems high with no load

Fingers crossed its all sorted so I can get back to the rift just not the same game without it lol

74c stock cooler at load. Your cpu is far too hot for stock so I guess they didn't apply the heatsink or compound correctly.

ED isnt the problem here, your system is, and it is something you need to get sorted out whilst under warranty.

what happens if you run prrime torture test for a few hrs? if ED over heats your CPU then so should this, and if a CPU is not 24hrs prime torture stable then imo the builder has no place selling it.

I will be the 1st to admit in the past i have run machines bordering on stable/unstable and on the edge of the heat envelope, and for my own use that is fine if it gets a game playable at a set level, but this is not the same as selling it at that level!.

are you certain you have good airflow around your case?

Circulation of air wise I think so there is one 240 mm on the top one at the back 1 at the front and two built into side panels which are permanently on and the big radiator and fan on the cpu might have to look at further cooling systems or rearrange ones I already have

you have more than enough fans so that should not be an issue... what i meant was, you are not running your pc with your case sat on carpet and inside say an entertainment unit with restricted airflow are you?

if not then as others have said, sounds like your cpu heatsink is not sat properly assuming all the fans are spinning up properly

No it's sits alone way of the floor and room temp is around 15 deg. I've been asked to go into bios press F5 and save, then got to try and recreate my problem and grab a screen shot of temps and go from there

Many programs show the default processor speed (for example when you agree to a steam survey and it collects your processor details it always shows the default speed) but..... If you install a system info program it will show the actual speed including overclock... I use AIDA 64 but u can download the free Coretemp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ or https://www.piriform.com/speccy

From what they told you I guess they're telling the truth but you still need to check just to be sure.

I guess 4.5ghz would certainly challenge that particular heatsink. Another thing you need to establish is whether the fans on that CPU cooler are going up to full speed under load. The system builder might have used a balanced fan profile in the bios to reduce noise. For that overclock you'd want the CPU fan speed to reach maximum when necessary. You can check this in the bios. There would be presets for quiet, balanced or extreme.

Perhaps you also have desktop fan monitor/control software on your desktop? ASUS/Gigabyte/MSI motherboard?

Install Speccy or use AIDA to check if the cpu fan is speeding up under load.

Thanks for the advice will check out said programs tomorrow but I reset back to stock 3.5 like advised worked fine on my lads minecraft 60-65c but as soon as I sit inside or outside station with the rift on those temps were back up to 90c really quickly going to leave ed alone till this problem is under control, many thanks again to all that have tried to help out much appreciated

Yeah a CPU temp that is 60C on idle if clearly not cooled well. Even the stock cooler should be able put it at 30-40C easily.
You probably either have a misaligned heatsink or a cpu fan full of dust so the air cant flow through. Its easy fixable.
