Forgot my AFMU and the FSD is giving me grief - Limping - any way to resolve?

DO NOT continue to use neutron boosts with a failing FSD!!!!!!!

A failing FSD will occasionally drop you out of supercruise, and if this happens while you are supercharging your FSD in the neutron cone then you are a goner and you will lose the ship plus all of your data!!!!!

Oh really? hmmm better stop then! I've not have the drive drop me out yet, must have been lucky

Go on, point and laugh! :D - I left home without my two AMFUs

So went out to the fringe using neutrons and the usual boost shenanigans. then got the malfunction error, followed by a facepalm when I looked at my modules. - Anywho closest port is Colonia which is only 20kly away but FSD is really upset with me. Can this be resolved by any other means other than at a port or AMFU?

I'll get back at some point I guess.

I did a reboot but it's not broken enough.... yet :D

Hang tight and wait for the update that adds EVA or space walking and then you'll be able to go back there and patch it up it up.

Someone should come up with a printable A4 (or US equivalent) print out of a pre-flight equipment check list of things you wish to take with check-boxes. Fill it out offline, tick the things you want to take.

Then, prior to leaving, sit in the station and check you have everything.

Having said that, I've never forgotten anything.

Good luck commander, light speed in getting back, be sure to take a picture of your battered ship when you make it. AND stay away from the NSs!

Made it to Colonia, first time visitor - picked up a couple of 6D AMFUs seems the good gear is in short supply! Note I did get FSD failed loads of times while I was in the 'great blue surf' but I never dropped out of SC? So maybe I'm super lucky! Data 50mil due to shortened trip!

Thank you for your wisdom and support!

It is possible to run your FSD down to 0% and have it fail.... And in this case, you can always do a reboot and repair to get it back to 1%

My experience while testing this was that the random failures was not as frequent when you run your FSD down to 40-50% integrity, as opposed to frequent fails that occurred around the 70% integrity.

And fun fact, when you FSD finally fails, you will be thrown out of super cruise... You can simulate this while in super cruise and disable your FSD.
And I have only found one way to deliberately do this, and that is to supercharge your FSD....so you will drop out very close to the cone of star when doing this.

Thing is, with the advent of colonia and the pit stops along the highway there, players are never ever really far from a star port nowadays. So where as in the early days of the game, a failing FSD 20 kylies out of the bubble was a real pain in the posterior, now if you are at sag a while you are 20 kylies from the bubble, you are only ~5 kylies from colonia. Just detour, patch the ship up and fit an afmu. fly safe and enjoy the rest of your expedition. o7

Done that. Though I wasn't forgetful, just started neutron boosting on a whim when unlocking Palin. Return trip was slow.
Good luck. You will make it! :)

Failures increase as integrity decreases, 80% mark is when failures begin. The emergency drop is the same as double tapping the FSD button, or shutting it down in the modules tab.

Just imagine the 5 min walk to the FSD to hit it with a hammer when space legs are developed :D Soon™
/sarcasm

The main issue with a faulty FSD is not the massive hassle of false starts, it is that eventually the FSD will start causing emergency drops, each drop will damage your ship. Your FSD will always function after a reboot, but at 1%, the highest failure rate. Don't envy you.

I learnt the hard way 3 years ago, and that was just 400LY with 50% integrity on the FSD (16LY range before engineering) never left the bubble without an AFMU since.

That situation you describe... i remember it well... I had a rendezvous with a twin neutron star back in the days, when they were evil little dots with grav lensing and without mag jets - and they fried the ship to bits after hitting the occlusion zone... I limped back from just behind the core with 3 months of data in the vault... The moment the hangar doors closed above the pile of scrap metal i called a ship was priceless... Elite gives you the best time, when it gets close :)

Made it to Colonia,

I bet it looked like this:

Welcome back, CMDR.

I bet you won't forget AFMUs again!

Would pay 10M Cr to have heard your palm slap when you realised!
