DO NOT continue to use neutron boosts with a failing FSD!!!!!!!
A failing FSD will occasionally drop you out of supercruise, and if this happens while you are supercharging your FSD in the neutron cone then you are a goner and you will lose the ship plus all of your data!!!!!![]()
Go on, point and laugh!- I left home without my two AMFUs
So went out to the fringe using neutrons and the usual boost shenanigans. then got the malfunction error, followed by a facepalm when I looked at my modules. - Anywho closest port is Colonia which is only 20kly away but FSD is really upset with me. Can this be resolved by any other means other than at a port or AMFU?
I'll get back at some point I guess.
I did a reboot but it's not broken enough.... yet

It is possible to run your FSD down to 0% and have it fail.... And in this case, you can always do a reboot and repair to get it back to 1%
My experience while testing this was that the random failures was not as frequent when you run your FSD down to 40-50% integrity, as opposed to frequent fails that occurred around the 70% integrity.
And fun fact, when you FSD finally fails, you will be thrown out of super cruise... You can simulate this while in super cruise and disable your FSD.
And I have only found one way to deliberately do this, and that is to supercharge your FSD....so you will drop out very close to the cone of star when doing this.
Ok well thanks you for the feedback, I'm gunna keep boosting, also have a backup plan...

The main issue with a faulty FSD is not the massive hassle of false starts, it is that eventually the FSD will start causing emergency drops, each drop will damage your ship. Your FSD will always function after a reboot, but at 1%, the highest failure rate. Don't envy you.
I learnt the hard way 3 years ago, and that was just 400LY with 50% integrity on the FSD (16LY range before engineering) never left the bubble without an AFMU since.
Made it to Colonia, first time visitor - picked up a couple of 6D AMFUs seems the good gear is in short supply! Note I did get FSD failed loads of times while I was in the 'great blue surf' but I never dropped out of SC? So maybe I'm super lucky! Data 50mil due to shortened trip!
Thank you for your wisdom and support!

I bet it looked like this:
