General / Off-Topic [FORUM] Forum (vBulletin) Issues

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, as it's primarily for the site admin's attention, but there are a few things about the vBulletin technology that are increasingly irritating.

1) on completion of reading the topics on a forum then clicking back to a higher level category forum is listed as having unread messages. 99% of the time I need to use the "Forum Tools"->"Mark Topics Read" option to mark it as read, even though when I go back into that forum there's nothing in there marked in bold to show that it's unread. Occasionally (1% of the time) even using the Forum Tools option doesn't work. It doesn't work most often if I have posted a reply to a topic and that post is the first on a new page.

2) is there any way to put breadcrumbs at the bottom of the page too? Having to scroll back to the top of the page to get back to the parent forum is rather long-winded and is putting a lot of stress on my poor mouse wheel. It's also distracting to the other people sitting around me at work (especially worrying when the Director of Software is sitting two seats away from me), and often wakes Mrs Selezen when I'm foruming when she's asleep, prompting dangerous mumblings of bodily harm should I not cease and desist my wheelies.

Can anyone save me? Both my job and my marriage are at stake here? ;)

Yours,

Worried from Derby

If I understand you correctly, I recommend not to use the "Back" browser button but use button on the top of the page (shown in green), which takes you back to a higher level, and update information on what messages you read, and what no.

And by the way, if you do not know what the forum is a great page User CP, where it will display only the forum thread to which you have subscribed.

As to scroll up, while reading I keep one hand on the tablet (I have it instead of a mouse), and the second - on the keyboard, and for something to scroll up, once is enough for me to press the button "Home". But this, of course, only a temporary solution =)

Configuration of vBulletin

While we are at it.
The way the Frontier forum is configured, all forums are marked as read when you log out and then in at a later time. (If anyone know how to change this in user settings, please help)

This is very frustrating, and if my research is correct, it's a global setting admin can change. I would much rather set forums read manually if I don't want to read them, but leaving those posts I want to read later (mainly for time constraint reasons) as unread.

Same here. I've missed some important posts because of this before.

But from what I understand some do prefer it this way.

I totally agree. Very annoying when Unread Topic through time (hour or half-hour) is marked as read.
I think the problem is that the forum keeps a list of unread messages on the user's computer.
I met one forum, also in vBulletin, with such and such a problem. They were able to translate the data read messages on the server.
And after that I have unread forum thread show up the same on different computers (now at my house a few forum posts that I have read on the job, are marked as unread).

I use the "new posts" button at the top a fair bit. I find that this covers the posts that I have missed since I last logged on.

It is not always =)
For example, I clicked on the button "new posts", and I flashed the message list, but damn (!), An accountant distracted me for two hours on the computer. When I came back, again pressed the button "new posts", then this list will be different, and those thread in which the two hours there was not anything new will not be shown on the screen.

1) You use your laptop in the bedroom? That would get me turfed out due to the light! Do you play under the covers?? so to speak.

2) Ctrl-Home will normally jump you to the top on Windows, on an iPad, you can tap the black bar at the top.

My mine gripe is that my login gets forgotten in a couple of minutes and I have to keep logging back in.

As we are airing what we don't like about the forum, I'd like to say I wish the Private Message total was a lot higher than 25.

I have ZERO private messages. But I'm not sad:rolleyes: EDIT: Perhaps I am, but not in the way you are thinking

I have similar probs regarding read threads, but I always assumed that was because I dot around between PC, Phone and Tablet.

I don't have a bedroom - due to my daughter not having her own place, then popping out a sprog we had to give up the main bedroom and let her and the baby have it. We currently sleep on a sofa bed. However, she recently got a place to live and we have the room back, but we need to decorate and re-furnish it first.

All those solutions are good, but not as "instantly fulfilling" as the one-click solution of having breadcrumbs at the bottom of the page too.

Do you have cookies enabled?

P.S. Yes, PMs above 25 would be nice.

I can't stand to see suffering of this magnitude so i've decided to step in and end it - i wish i had known about this issue earlier as i could of prevented untold misery.

here is the solution you seek you can either run it from my site of if you prefer download and run it locally as it's only written in html and should be fairly easy to addapt if you wish to add any of the private forums you have access too.

Wow. I'm speechless. Such a simple idea, and it's embarrassing that (as a web developer) I didn't think of it myself.

Thanks, Andy! That might just be a solution for the masses...
