Forum members divide - lighthearted

I must be a Type F or something. Played Elite on an 8 bit Amstrad 464, then Frontier on a 32 bit 486. While I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer I generally have a machine in the house that is reasonably up to date (FX 8350, 16Gb Ram, 7870 with Tahiti LE core, SSD's in RAID 0) and can handle 95% of the latest titles with most of the eye candy turned on at 1920x1200. I have built my own machines since 91, have a steam account, in my 40s, my keyboard is mechanical and my mouse still has a wire, my HOTAS is practically indestructible and I prefer TrackIR over Oculus Rift :D
Reading through my description, i'm obviously passed it and long in the tooth

I'm a D.

Played original elite
Played Frontier and FFE
Started online gaming in late 90's with Starseige Tribes (EDIT I lied, I started online in early-mid 90's at UNI playing MUD.... anyone know what that is?)
Moved to Counter Strike beta5, then 6 then 6.5 then v1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6
then counterstrike condition zero
then CS Source
Then gave up gaming, to re-kindle a marriage, which went pear shaped
met someone new
she convinced me to get back to it, so i'm playing CS GO occasionally and waiting for ED

I HATE CONSOLES with a passion, and hate console controllers. KB/Mouse yes, Joystick for flight sims yes, Steering wheels for driving games yes, but not those silly little hand held crappy things.

Type.... erm... T...
Started gaming with Star Trek on TRS-80 in late '70s. Also was an arcade gamer so I find games where you cannot die boring (The thrill of putting off the inevitable loss of all lives as long as possible - anyone else remember that?).
Bought and played BBC B Disk Elite when it came out in '84. Addicted. First game with savegame capability as I recall but savescumming was not something that ever appealed to me.
Pretty much been a gamer (30+hours a week) ever since (PC) but maybe ten years ago found myself losing interest in new games and going all retro, lots of playing Elite on an Amiga emulator.
Then the E:D Kickstarter happened, and I just got married, and I don't know where I am going to find the time... :)

MS free zone

Computers/Gaming devices I have owned, in rough order.

  • Pong (tennis/football/squash)
  • Nintendo Game-n-Watch (Donkey Kong Jnr)
  • Acorn Electron
  • Amiga A500
  • Sony PlayStation
  • Nintendo N64
  • Sony Playstation 2
  • Nintendo GameCube
  • Apple iMac 20" G5
  • Sony Playstation 3
  • Nintendo Wii
  • Apple iPod touch 1G
  • Apple iMac 27" i7 Quad core
  • Apple iPad 1G

I still have all of these devices, although the Game-n-Watch might be lost in the attic.
Also note, a Microsoft-free zone. Although I did have many laptops with work and all but the first (which ran OS/2 - ahh, OS/2 *sigh*) were windows of some variety but they were never my machines.

If it still works that Game-n-Watch might be worth a bit of money, I've seen them for about £100 on ebay.

I used to have an Oil Panic one... there's one of those listed for £165. Shame I've no idea where it went.

Type D - Original elite player from the 80s who loved the game, but does not consider themselves a gamer due to lack of time. Likely to be in their 40s or 50s. They probably have an XBox 360 or PS3 that has hardly been used. May well have young children/grand children that take away more of their time.

Characteristics: Able to afford all the toys like a good HOTAS, TrackIR, Oculus Rift.
Likely to say: Bring it on....

Yes, this is me, minus the Grand kids. Played every Elite game, though mostly on my Spectrum. We had BBC's at school, where a few of us played originally.

I only ever got to Deadly though.

I am late to all these Kickstarter things, it seems like buses, nothing for years then two come at once. As an ex-pat living in Austin, TX, I am watching SC with great interest, but ED looks like the game for me! Far too much nostalgia for me I think.

None of the above.

Gaming always been my hobby since getting a speccy 48k in 1982.
Played elite on and off since for ever, am platform agnostic but now fully committed to PC now for the foreseeable due to being incredibly dissapointed by the new consoles.

Money saved from getting a console to go to an occulus rift or 3 screen cockpit.
