Newcomer / Intro Forward thrust vs throttle

Hi all. When using a hotas should I have the throttle bound to "throttle axis" or "thrust forward and backward axis"? I know it sounds silly to ask but I've found inconsistencies with both settings and wonder what everyone else is using.

The throttle should be bound to throttle axis as forward/backward thrust does not work in supercruise. Basically you want to be able to control your speed with the throttle while super cruising.

Disagree. I have thrust on forward/backward axis, but my HOTAS has a middle indent. This allows me to throttle backwards during combat, which is incredibly important for turning.

If you are going to combat in any even vaguely serious capacity REVERSE IS A MUST.

You can set to full range and have forward and reverse on the throttle, this is how i set it up.

I have mine (Thrustmaster T-Flight hotas X, which has a deadpoint in the middle for 0% speed) set at full amplitude, with propulsion axis being set to throttle axis under the "flight propulsion" section (the flight thrust section is dedicated to up/down-Left/right thrusters). I also disabled forward push and backward push in the "landing" section as the most minimal push would max thruster and send me into the buildings surrounding the landing platform.

My throttle is forward only, with a button toggle to flip it to reverse only, which I rarely use.

However, I also have analog toe breaks for forward and reverse thrust override, which I use heavily. Need to be barefoot for best effect though...socks and/or cause some issues with yawing while thrusting.

I'm using the Z axis (analogue throttle) on my hotas for thrust, which obviously works in normal space as well as supercruise. I too was a bit confused when I was doing the setup with the options to set forward and reverse thrust. Is it therefore possible to keep the main throttle on the err throttle, and also have a forward/reverse thrust (that self centers in flight assist) like you can with left/right and up/down?

I agree with the answers here.

i have an x-52 pro and have the thrust forwards and backwards axis assigned to one of the wheels that has a center detention as well and it works great when docking

The problem I found with that is when switching from "flight assist off" to "flight assist on", the in-game throttle goes out of sync with the hotas. After further testing I have realised that this was due to a bug. That's why I was so confused and questioning whether I should be using the forward/backwards thrust instead of throttle. Thanks for the replies anyway guys.
