Foundation - The Exploration Portal (Guides, Tools, Resources, Databases)

FOREWORD

Here you will find a list of Elite Exploration-related resources of all kinds, sorted in categories and subcategories. Entries are up-to-date as much as possible, which means that quite a lot of outdated resources and threads have not been kept from dognosh's and Dr. Kaii's collection threads; as hasn't been material that is not considered knowledge resource or tool, such as non-historical diaries. Were also left aside outdated or abandonned applications.

We probably missed a lot of other resources, so please farm your bookmarks to find what's not here. Media resources must clearly be above the average, bring something unique and preferably still be regularly updated. Have yet to be added: Expeditions archives (completed expeditions; we have the list), large/open player groups of explorers or exploration-friendly (we only have a few items so far).

App tags resources that need to be installed on a computer.
tags premium resources and tools.

Beginners and newcomers to exploration, you will find at the end of this post a list of beginner-oriented guides to help you getting started. They're all quality resources.

Here's the previous reference thread, Dognosh's collection thread, which lists, amongst other numerous things, the logs and diaries I decided not to keep here.

If you're looking for more generic resources, including all aspects of Elite: Dangerous, I invite you to check Alec Turner's epic collection thread (we're on a contest to know who has the biggest).

SUBMITTING A RESOURCE

Please fill this code, without the dashes, and post it as a comment. Submissions are not guaranteed to be added; they need to match the criteria.

Contributors: Alistair Hope, EfilOne, Alex Ringess, Marx, Greent

FROM NOW ON

A lot of threads here could benefit from a solid overhaul or update, whereas other could be synthesized (i.e., the three threads on the exploration slang could be mashed up in a single one). If some writers would like to take over shaping some older resources to a better and more up-to-date standard, please make yourself known!

Neutron Stars

THE NEUTRON FIELDS - A DEFINITIVE GUIDE
A guide to farming neutron stars from the Bubble to Sagittarius A*
Entry #9 | Author: Kancro Vantas | Added by Qohen Leth on 7/31/2017
MINI NEUTRON FIELD GUIDE
A guide to farming neutron stars in a rich field near the Bubble
TL;DR: Go to -2100, -1250, 18600 or DRYAA FLYUAE LM-W E1-2252 in the Galactic map and you will find millions of Neutron stars (and many black holes) within a few 1000 LYs of that system. Pick a region on the map near it and go there to start your surveying. There is also another Neutron field above the galactic plane, around +1200 in the Y-axis

Galactic map co-ordinate system : X,Y,Z e.g. -500, 200, 6562
First number is the lateral position(left/right) on the map
2nd number is height(up/down)
3rd is depth(from nearest to the civilisation bubble, to the core and beyond)
0,0,0 is SOL

How to set your galactic map to only show Neutron/Black hole systems : open map -- view -- show by colour -- star class -- only enable "non-sequence", remove all the other star classes.

When deep exploring (long range) I tend to decide on a route/place I want to go to and then finish up, before turning back, by going to the neutron fields to make a bit more credits. Not only you get to do what you want (initial exploration route), but you make more credits towards getting your Exploration Elite rank. As of right now Neutron stars pay about 55,000 Cr approx. (Black Holes about 60,000) [2.3 numbers], these values vary slightly. Remember that on most of those you will get a 50% bonus for first discovery!

The Neutron field is a vast area full of Neutron/Black Hole systems, but importantly, you can go from one neutron star to another in less than the jump range of the Asp. In fact if you make it to the denser parts of this field, you can reach the next neuty in less than 5 LY on most occasions. The ideal distance for a 32 LY jump range Asp is to do jumps that are less than 12 LY, as it is very efficient at those distances and on one tank of fuel, you can visit over 100 systems! The other thing the Neutron field has lots of is scoopable systems, so you will never run out of fuel

The Top/Right/Front of the Neutron field(i.e. closest to SOL) is at around co-ordinates -900, -1050, 14800. A system around there would be FLOARPS MX-U E2-1530. So this is the front edge of the field that is closest to the civilisation bubble. I am not in the bubble so my best guesstimate is you have to go about 16000-17000 to get there.

The really dense part of the Neutron Field is quite wide but I will give you one co-ordinate to start with: -2100, -1250, 18600 or DRYAA FLYUAE LM-W E1-2252. The best way to go about this is to make your way eventually to the dense part, but pick and choose a destination first. If you play with the map, around the last co-ordinates I posted above, you will see you have a huge choice of where to go!

Some stats on the Neutron Field (all values below are approximate):
To the best of my knowledge of looking around the map :
Width = 8000 LY ( from -900 to -9000)
Height = 700 LY (from -1000 to -1700)
Depth = 14000 LY (from 15000 to 29000) , yes, beyond the core !!!

My most conservative (and I mean very very conservative) estimate is that we have upwards of 300 Million Neutron/Black hole systems in that region alone.

Until we get multiple waypoint capability, we have to set every jump manually (we only want neutron systems,except if we need re-fuelling) [As of 2.4, the route plotter can plot through multiple neutron stars]. Don't be dazzled by all the neutron systems around you, just go in a straight line (left to right, front to back or diagonally) and keep to that plan and ignore any system that is not in your path. If you spread your systems, then even if you come back on exactly the same path, you won't have to worry about finding a system you haven't been to.

One final tip. When you get to the Neutron fields, go to your map and disable the route lines, as it helps immensely. To do that go to your Map, then the Navigation tab, and see if economical or fastest route is chosen. Which ever is chosen, click on it, and now both options are off.

ROUTE PLOTTING IN THE CORE: AN EXPLANATION
Why plotting is sometimes laggy in the Core, and how to lessen this effect
[UPDATE: As of 2.4, the plotter lagging issue are supposedly fixed; however, it appears that those symptoms can still happen; this method below could still be useful.]

If you prefer your guides in video form, check out this excellent summary by Dr. Kaii about how to get around this problem!

It's widely known that ships with a large jump range (>30Ly especially) often have serious trouble navigating in the core: routes will often take half an hour or more to plot, lagging the game horribly as they do so.
I believe I've found a solution for this, and I have a reason as to why it works. If you just want to know how to plot, just read the first part: for why I think it works, read further on... Evidence that it works: I recently did a Buckyball A* run where my entire time spent route plotting came to a bit under 18 minutes, for 30 plots. So, first up: you'll need the following; all examples assume a jump range of 35Ly.

N is the maximum number of full range jumps you can do within 1000Ly - e.g. 1000 / 35 = 28.57..., so N = 28
M is the distance travelled by that number of jumps - e.g. 35 * 28 = 980
D is the distance you are from Sgr A*, in 1000Ly - so if you're at about 15k from A*, D = 15

Plot = M - ((N / 4) + (D * 2))

Now, you're probably thinking "MATHS?! I didn't come here for maths!", and that's fine. This isn't exact anyway, it's a half-decent approximation I just made up based on what I've experienced. You might need to go a little higher or lower than this suggests to get fast plots. It's just a guide. What it means is that if you have a "max optimal range" of 980Ly, you need to plot much lower than that on the edges of the core if you want to get a good plot. Let's plug some numbers in at various distances:

15k from A*: 980 - (7 + 30) = 943
10k from A*: 980 - (7 + 20) = 953
5k from A*: 980 - (7 + 10) = 963
0k from A*: 980 - (7 + 0) = 973

The important thing to remember: if you don't have a route within about 15 seconds, you probably won't have one for a very long time. In this case, exit the Galaxy Map, go back in, and try at a different distance cry in a corner because FD broke all the methods we had to cancel bad route plots.

UPDATE: CMDR Charizard (Revalationist on Reddit) has helpfully created a C# GUI application to do the maths for you! You can find it here (thread). If you prefer a console version, ratchety6 on Reddit has you covered here.

Now, for the full explanation...

The reason for subtracting based on the number of jumps is that, even in the core, you aren't plotting exactly in a straight line (to go 980Ly straight-line distance, you'd actually have to travel nearer 990Ly).
It's close, though - and it gets closer to a straight line the further in you get, hence the distance component.

74mvwzp.png

Let's say you're plotting a route to the red star. For most of the route, the planner will use the fastest route it can (the blue segment). However, now it's got to a place where it's sure it will take exactly three jumps to reach the destination. It could now do something like this:

ukUraEn.png

However, this is pretty inefficient - given the way fuel usage works, it's best to choose jumps as close to equal length as possible. Something like this:

QCpJoLA.png

So that's exactly what the route planner does - once it's sure how many jumps are left (it usually knows this with 2-5 jumps left) it picks the most equidistant jumps it can. You might notice this when plotting long routes normally - the last few jumps are usually significantly shorter than the rest of the route. To do that, however, it needs to evaluate all the viable options:

Slightly messy, but no big deal - it's got a few options to choose from at each hop, so it takes maybe a second or so, but no problem. No problem, that is, until we get to the core. Because once you're in the core, it looks more like this:

B888exB.png

Now there are a lot of choices for each hop; this is exacerbated by long jump ranges. So trying to pick those last few equidistant hops looks more like this:

d2EmY9T.png

It's not abundantly clear from the picture, but there are orders of magnitude more options for the route planner to take. If the stars are twice as dense, it takes 8x as long to calculate three jumps; in the core the stars are a whole lot more than twice as dense than outside. Now let's take another approach: instead of our original destination, let's stop here instead:

Hf6TBSE.png

The route planner still does its check - it knows that it can get there within two jumps, but only just. So, its choices look more like this:

NfXPnPW.png

It has far, far fewer choices to check, because the only valid choices are right on the edge of your jump range. Thus, the route takes a couple of seconds to plot, not half an hour.

OK - this is pretty damn awesome. If you haven't already (and actually I can see a lot of cross over so maybe you have) then you'll find a lot of useful reference links over in my sticky "Best of Forum (and elsewhere)" thread that you might want to use. I'll certainly be cribbing some stuff from here and re-posting it over there.
