FPS comparing in-game SBS mode and DK2

Hi Guys,

First post here (but “not that long” time reader), welcome to me ! Nice to meet you :)

I’m an ex-game dev and current dev for embedded system so know prety well computers, electronics, etc. I’m an happy Commander for weeks in ED and really enjoy it. The DK2 is a children dream and I really would like to develop for it.

Before getting my DK2 last week I made tons of tests with ED to be sure my machine could handle it on fps side (I7 3770K OC 4,4, GTX970 OC, 8GB). I used the Side-by-Side display option of the game, on 2D monitor or on my 3D TV (nearly same result) to get an idea about FPS I could pretend when rendering half-sbs like ED in the DK2. The only unknown factor was the positional tracking cost. My assumption here was than rendering in the rift at half-sbs 75fps can be compared to rendering on a 2D monitor using the SBS menu options. Rendered surfaces are the same AFAIK, 2x(960x1080) in 3D, so I’m sadly surprised by my FPS in-game with the DK2. Without vsync on 2D monitor fullHD I’m always above 110 fps. Using the SBS mode in ingame display option and I can stay hours above 75 fps (average 90fps). All that at ED maximum settings. With the DK2, at minimum settings (and when I say minimum, it’s minimum but keeping super-sampling x 1 and resolution 1920x1080) I can barely reach 25/30fps (roughly, CTRL-F don’t display FPS in game with DK2, suggestions are welcome), and it’s judder island. I know we use a devkit so possibly non optimized software, and adding the positional tracking part could cost a lot, but not that much. In any case the experience is great and the fact to be inside the cockpit is breathless. Did you guys have such big FPS cost between SBS mode and DK2 mode? For me it’s not really playable. Other than the possible non optimization side, where did I miss a point here? I think I read all sticky and lot of suggestions already, but didn’t find a comparison between SBS and DK2 so far (don’t hesitate to point me on threads if you think about one useful).

Thanks in advance for suggestions and idea! :)

Sorry, don't find a way to edit my post above.

Just want to say I found several posts in the official OR forum talking about similar configuration than me, and people can get easely 75fps and more using ED settings between max and ultra, so it's definitively something I missed on my configuration. So I'll dig further here to understand why I have so much FPS problems and other not! ;)

hello brother

SBS cant really be compared to oculus mode as more horse power is required in rift for warping effect, so its not a good comparison

make sure your display mode is set to 'extended' in oculus utility

set res in game to 1080p, game should default vsync on. turn all settings to low to start except 'oculus image quality' slider, leave that maxed out

if your using msi afterburner to monitor FPS, set riva tuner frame limit to '75' and set OSD to 300x300 so you can see it in the rift

set power management to 'prefer max performance' in nvidia control panel, and make sure you cpu cores are unparked

now, with everything on, make sure msi OSD is set to show FPS, core clock, memory clock, gpu usage and memory usage

if FPS are still low, check the core clock and memory clock are not underclocking(power save mode)

if fps are high/locked at 75, start turning settings up, but bare inmind that the riftis very good at making things look rubbish, so not much point going ultra, medium is fine,

i have pretty much the same setup as you, i run 1080p with AA, AO, shadows and effects OFF, i can run at 1440p but can drop into the mid 60s in Resource extraction sites so i leave it at 1080p(smaa is on)

and last, change your HUD colour to green https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=73419

oh, and make sure your rift firmware and SDK are up to date

hope this helps brother

Thanks for your kind advice Man! With your suggestions I'm able to keep 75 fps at least in Space, and between 70 and 75fps in station. In any case it's far from perfection: I often get judder even locked at 75 fps, often lose the Positional Tracking (gray flash) when moving my heads (average once per seconds) and that create additional judders. My camera is well set and I can verify this in the Oculus Rift configuration (Show demo scene) The experience is far from smooth, even if I decrease all to the minimum and have 75 fps anytime. I don't have this problem with dk2 demos but ED is probably the most costly. I'm surprised to have those judders when turning my head, moving etc even locked to a stable 75fps, something is wrong here. I read I could try to use a powered USB hub as currently all is plugged in my rig. I plugged the optional power supply for the rift just in case but nothing better, it still not butter smooth. Now need to dig to understand why my HUD didn't get green after the modifications, I understand all will be more readable. Let's investigate! ;)

Thanks again, you unlocked a big part of my problems! :)

Edit: Guess I found my green HUD problem: when Frontier push an update, they get rid of the modification (usual) and even a backup I made in the same directory was deleted! Ooops, wild guys! ;) Let's do the modification again! :)

no problem brother

as for judder and positional tracking, make sure your oculus is plugged direct into the PC USB, no extenders or USB hubs, and also make sure the psu that came with the rift is plugged in, which you've done, make sure its NOT plugged into usb3, im sure there was a problem with usb3, cant quite remember now......... and have you unparked those CPU cores???

i had same issues when i changed to the gtx970, took a couple of days to get it right

another thing to bare in mind is the station and ship your using. instance: pretty much all the stations in 'sol' give me frame drops into the 60s, its just the level of detail inside, but i also noticed that some ships are laggy so to speak, i went from 45fps in 1 dock to 65fps in same dock just because i changed ship to the eagle from the cobra.

and last, any stutter in supercruise is game engine related, its not your set up.

happy rifting, i cant play it any other way :D

peace

this judder issue

is it a separate issue to the positional tracking loss?? what i mean here is, when positional tracking is lost, the image usually becomes washed out/gray to let you know the camera isnt picking up the rift, and will usually incur some sort of judder, but heres what im getting at............. iv just run elite with the optional 2nd output to my main monitor, so peeps can see what im doing when they call round for a look, however, it caused low persistence to switch off, causing a judder/blurring of everything in the rift, even though it was locked at 75fps. its almost like 3 images of the same thing as you move your head, do you get this sort of judder??
