FPS performance notes of interest

Although I am aware that problems with FPS are ongoing and there are numerous posts already, I thought I would just put my 2 pence out there in case it is of any use to anyone (Devs?).

My PC build is basically an i7, SSD and Geforce 2080 Super, so not super recent but in my opinion 'capable'.

I have been playing Odyssey and have been doing the recent combat oriented Community Goal. I started doing the 'in ship' CZs and this played well. Locked at 60 FPS for everything, combat, docking, launching, stations, megaships etc. The thing to note here was I was playing at a 4K resolution. (Also, VR was working pretty well)

I decided to switch to 'on ground' CZ in a nearby settlement and this is where FPS dropped to anywhere between 10 and 30. As we all know, there is more going on in a settlement and so this was not entirely unexpected by me still running at 4K.

Now, from this point it didn't really matter what changes I made to the graphics options. I set them to Ultra, High, Mid, Low and was seeing SLIGHT changes to FPS. Maybe 25 - 45 now. So then I thought, I'll just drop the resolution down to 1080 - that's a quarter of the pixels being rendered - should be a doddle for my setup. Unbelievably, I again was seeing hardly any improvement to FPS - maybe 30 - 50 now.

How can this be! I'm no graphics expert but I'm going to suggest that the issues have little to do with rendering and there must be more of a CPU bottleneck. Does this sound right to anyone? Anyone else experiencing the same?

Hope it didn't sound like a rant - wasn't supposed to be. On the whole, I am enjoying Odyssey and will continue to play but I might just stay away from on foot settlements for a bit.

Nah, just a meager four threads on the front page right now detailing how performance is all across the board, regardless of hardware.

i don't know if it's like QOL differences between countries(mine succ) or i am just a weirdo but a 2080 super should carry this game with ease with its "eyes closed"
this rig is and will be killer for a few years still, the way some picture 20xx cards is that "ik they are a bit old but still", no they are not old they are still great, ofc aren't 4k60 Ultra quality capable on few AAA titles iirc but 2k or 1080 should be a breeze.

Look at the CPU use. It feeds the graphics pipeline.

With Horizon, its low. With Odyssey, its blazingly hot. So much it impacts the responsiveness of other programs. I've noticed it with running EDD in paralllel.

My feeling (and it's just that) is that its CPU is constraining the pipeline

i7+2070super on a notebook here.
Most of time graphic card never goes above 75C but CPU comes almost 90 to 100C.
