Friend dragged me back into E: D - has this game not changed? A request, a rant.

You could make the same argument for literally every game or form of entertainment ever devised, including sport, literature, film, music, theatre, etc. Aside from aiding the passage of time, games by their nature are utterly pointless!
So's Ripping the heed of it, but it's still fun.

I may get into trouble for that one.

Well go one further - existence itself is pointless. All life on this planet can and will die, and the universe won't care or even notice.

Okay, interval-lengthening-into-yearly Elite check-in.

Temporal stasis detected.

This game is still the same; forum chirp about it is the same. That one guy is even still here complaining about Engineers whenever he posts anything. Nothing inspiring this year to be found in this part of space gaming. See you in 2022 if real aliens haven't invaded by then.

Oh Seven CMDRs

As of right now, Elite is a "game", where you log in, get immersed best way you can. Just to, I dunno, feeling of cool like sitting in your own ships' highly detailed cockpit, navigating vastness of the void. There's no actual gameplay or sense in whatever you do. I presume many people since release hoped it would change, at least a little, but it doesn't seem like to change... ever.

I'd be begging Fdev to throw us some experimental, castrated offline build of this game, maybe restricted in 10 system or so, well, anything. Things small group of people can do with this game in couple of weeks to a month will put their whole dev department to shame in an instant in terms of actual depth, emergent gameplay, tweaks to combat/economy, vast complexity of all the systems, but we can only dream... So much potential, so wasted...

*sadness intensifies
Whole makeover mods, play as thargoid, ship overhauls, playable capital ships. I don't know why, but nothing ever came close to Freelancer on the multiplayer side. Community-hosted servers, crazy mod support, no instancing of systems. Alas, alas. What a great times it was.

Well, this took a depressing turn...

That actually also sums up my whole problem with the game pretty pretty well.

Oh well!

a well-framed multiplayer experience. A tad much to ask, I reckon, and a hope that I no longer hold.

not that much to ask, if you consider that the box literally says "multiplayer" and you get genius(tm) mode salad. well, technically it is "multi - player" ...

Just gonna accept the game as-is by now. Let's see how long it lasts.

see? i knew you were gonna make it. all good now.

yes, it's called "reductio ad absurdum" and only dumb people fall for it, but i see you had a good harvest 😂

The OP certainly has a point: all gameplay in ED is inherently pointless. You either use all imagination you got - or you rather should play something else with more substance. And if Frontier isn't careful, soon everyone will call the game Hello Kitty in space (but as always: daaaangerous!).
'Existence' is inherently pointless but whilst we're here we may as well try and enjoy it and if not, well there's plenty of other things to do with one's existence

All gaming is inherently pointless, yet serves the purpose of stress release and relaxation quite well. I can suggest to OP that having a rant over the phone or in person is a lot more effective and can be quite cathartic.

OP could also get out of their OP (...) ship and play alongside their friend, role playing a newbie to the galaxy teaming up with a friend to overcome the dangerous of the galaxy. Perhaps flying a Viper Mk IV as protection to the buddy's T6. You can even float alongside each other within rings of gas giants and marvel at the orbital mechanics and how relative motion makes it look like you are sitting still in space while orbiting majestic planets at reckless relative velocities.
