Frontier: Can you please define your understanding of "Limited"

Oh I was once like you. Frontier could do no wrong.

One day....one day....

It will happen soon.

Im very critical of many things they do with the game. The way the game is build for/as solo with multi lazily thrown in makes me mad just to think about it but the marketing i have no problem with.

I think limited should apply to this thread, really the ED forums are possibly the most insane I have ever seen. 38 pages about limited flag paint jobs...

Really? Its nothing to do with the flag paint jobs anymore. We've moved on. Keep up dear!

(I realise my last post was talking of that but I was addressing an very specific point).

it was added to entice more people to buy it, it was never intended to be a true mmo, those cost way too much for them to even try.

Those of us who believed the hardest fell the hardest. Though I had wisened up enough by the time gamma launched that there was no Magic Gold release that would be feature complete people kept going on about....

Well I disagree - I've been here a while now and seen Frontier go from blunder to blunder with marketing and comms for this game.

I've worked in PR and disaster recovery (not as PR person but as a developer but I had to learn pretty much everything along the way without signing my soul to the devil), I see the signs and if it continues I don't see it going well.

None of this comes from a place of hate (like some people on here over gameplay issues) but because I have a financial and emotional reason for Frontier and this game to succeed.

For what its worth at this stage, as some of you have made up your minds of what this is about, I only ever bought one flag skin - Finnish one, to impress my Finnish girlfriend. I personally found them garish. This was never about the skins or my exclusivity - it was about how Frontier handle their marketing and communication.

I was the champion of the "fanbois" and always pushed the "no way that'll happen" cause but, oh my how the mighty have fallen :( First time fanboi here, so the lesson is particularly hard and embarrassing for me but, alas, the blinders are off and a last ditch effort to save the ship is in full effect.

Really I just want to be the only one with a shiny flag skin (kidding)

How is that possible when multiplayer, MMO, "we bring friends" and all that crap IS the marketing? Every single "marketing" push from FD has championed the multiplayer (virtual lack thereof in reality) aspects of what the "rolling development" (unbeknownst to prospective customers) may eventually bring but, they fail to say that it's not currently in the game and is intended to be added sometime in, what is it now, March I think?

Which goes back to the "departments" thing, one is saying one thing while the other is doing something else. At least we know for sure that (as we expected) that "mood piece" of a trailer was not touched by the game people as that would have just been too much. "Oh it's ok, the other department made that, silly marketing, they don't even play the game so, how would they have known? Good mood piece though" :D )

And here i am, living in a 3rd world country that doesn't even have a flag skin...

We'll start a thread for you in a couple months when this one is resolved. Just kidding ;)

I disagree with that, look at Braben past, it's plain to see, anyone would want that kind of game multiplayer so they tried but hey just didnt have the knowledge to do it. Still, ill never accept that chat does not work with friends between instance because reasons, that makes for a bad game where you need external voip which defeats the whole point of not having it in game in the first place.

Anyways ive derailed this enough im out.

Yep we have marketing saying things like limited time offer, designers saying the game won't be balanced for pvp and mike evans saying the python is going to be balanced a tad. I'm left wondering why i should believe anything anyone from FD has to say.

I'd like to know when the Chinese flag will be available? We're one of the biggest countries in the world (population and economy wise).

Can we just look a little deeper and beyond skins and landings for a moment ?
This might have been the OPs opening statement but the thread has moved beyond that now and into how Frontier operates as a company. There are some real operational issues here that will affect the game and the company both in the short and long term. There's a lot of very naive statements being made by Frontier which worries a lot of people, inconsistent comms and quick edits and backtracks. Frontier doesn't have the correct structure in place to cope with what's on the horizon not does it appear to have a hiring strategy to match what it needs. The people in place in sales, marketing, PR are way over their head and I doubt Frontier has given any thought to structurally operating around a massive long term franchise like ED. Until it has a serious look at itself and admit it needs to change these issues will continue to crop up all the time.
I love this game, and I'll continue to invest my time in it, but wake up Frontier and stop burying your head in the sand. You need help and you clearly don't have the skills inhouse to deal with this.

Well I disagree - I've been here a while now and seen Frontier go from blunder to blunder with marketing and comms for this game.

I've worked in PR, I see the signs and if it continues I don't see it going well.

None of this comes from a place of hate (like some people on here over gameplay issues) but because I have a financial and emotional reason for Frontier and this game to succeed.

It really does show that Elite is the first online (MMO like) game Frontier have released. In so many ways it seems as though the various departments inside Frontier are each treating the game in a different manner. Marketing, Support and PR seem in many ways to be treating the game in the same manner as all other Frontier games; a single player "boxed game". The type of game a company releases and then only has to provide minimal support for, along with a few patches and a bit of DLC.

However the development of the game is obviously on an order of magnitude beyond that! A huge amount of work and resources are being poured into the game.

These two aspects are so completely at odds with each other that it isn't even funny. No good can come of it. There's no offline mode so if the game goes it will be gone for good. I want Elite to still be around years from now, it is now one of my top games of all time. However like you, I don't want to see the fate of the game suffer if Frontier do not get their act together. The game is being pulled in too many different directions and that is obvious by the number of cracks that keep appearing.

And what we are trying to tell you is that, in the eyes of fans and the general public, you're all the same company and what one department does is seen as what Frontier does not what "marketing" did. In the public's eyes there's just Frontier, not several different groups independent of each other. You all as the expression goes "live and die" by what the other does. See what I mean?

Also, to be more clear, with the exception of some capital stockpile or future investment perspectives all but guaranteeing planetary landings will come out, skins marked "limited" or not DOES INDEED affect whether planetary landings come out or not as people will become angry (see this thread), stop buying your stuff and therefore (unless the previously stated is true) insure that indeed it won't come out.

I may seem rough and calloused but, I do indeed really give a toot and frankly, you seem to (at least to me) think this is a small if not non-issue, which if true, and I hope I'm wrong, is way off the mark and very short sighted, certainly for someone that deals directly with the community.

Of course, I could be wrong, again I usually am but, this is an issue. It makes FD look bad, hurts FD's reputation, will indeed hurt future sales and therefore the company as a whole and will follow FD forever as the internet always goes. At some point (like the offline thing) you're going to see posts on here and comments across the internet on gaming sites about the "limited" skin ordeal right along with the "offline" thing. It may seem trivial right now and have very little impact on sales figures and/or operating capital but, you can bet it will in the future. But, hey, if the money is rolling in and things are going great then by all means let these seemingly little things slip by and watch how they come back to bite you in the future.

This is BY NO MEANS a threat or anything like that, I'm just stating what I've seen in the last 35 years or so of gaming happen over and over and am trying to help avoid it happening (again) to FD. Which, by the way, doesn't FD have someone that's supposed to be doing that?

From my biased (at this point) view there's a couple things that could/should happen:

1. Find out why this happened and tie up the loose ends, one way or the other with some kind of definitive clarification on here or the store for future sales items.

OR

2. Ignore the issue and refrain from acknowledging it exists.

I may be nuts and have it all wrong but, one thing I promise you I don't have wrong is that this makes FD look bad in the eyes of many and should be put to bed one way or the other.

Feedback taken on board. Thanks.
