Community Event / Creation Frontier: Elite 2 Introduction re-make

Okay, here is the first test render for the opening title sequence.

It is very much a work in progress, for example there is not background scene and it isn't the complete animation.
For me the most important part of the title sequence are the letters rotating down and then the camera moves to centre them. So I have
left the parts where the distributors name was displays, DB's name and where the letters fly in to shot, out for now.

I have also not bothered setting the textures for the letter. My thoughts at this stage is to use a gold like texture - maybe
with a surface pattern - but as the final look will depend much upon the look of the establishing shot for this sequence so
the look of the textures is a decision best left to that shoot is in the can.

I have gone for a very simple letter design - much like the original. Rather than use a very low vertex count like the
original I've built the letters from spheres, cylinders and tori. In POVray those are the basic building blocks so it
was quicker too. :) I also think it is in keeping with the better graphics that the game provides and will fit in with that
better.

Surely not if the eagles were already hostile to the courier?

i agree however the cap ships in the no fire zone of that instance wich could cause issue with security ships

Dobbo

looking good so far Dobbo. i have a sugestion though use the same font thats used in ED (i forget its name but its easily looked up via a search) nonetheless a nice early render similar to that 2001 version.

thought of a way round the cap ship problem..

the courier flyer would get a fine but as long as the camera angle is timed perfectly if the eagle self destructs it wont cause in game grief fromthe sytem sec .. but the angle would have to be bloody accurate to show it was being shot at when it blows.. just a thought

This thread is not awesome... it's ELITE!
I'm amazed astonished and willing to help.
I'm just coming back from deep space exploration. Shiuld be there in a day or two.

Greetings commanders!

For some time I have been thinking of working on a re-make of the iconic FE2 introduction sequence.

:) Most definitely approve of this and Jamie's soundtrack, although what could be used as a stand in for a LRC? Battleship perhaps? I know FD could likely put a scripted sequence together like they did with the "I bring friends" promo vid but I would really like to see the community take a crack at this.

I would also recommend trying to get King Haggis and Isinona onboard (even if its just advice) as they two know a think or two about putting together FE2 inspired videos.

I do wonder though if it might be worthwhile holding off on the planetside action sequences until planetary landings are in the game. As that would really make a remade intro shine.

Picturing this part: it could start with a Commander checking their boards when they recieve a comm signal that a pair of assassins (Dark Wheel agents?) are after him and they ought to get out of Dodge. The Commander runs to their Courier and does an emergency startup and takes off just as the two Eagles are taking a bead on him. Cue escape sequence. :)

Wow. Thanks everyone for the great responses.
Geraldine is right about possibly having to wait for PL to put the final touches into the landing sequence.

For now I think we should focus on gathering resources to record all the sections we can.

Obviously we will need a commander with a Imp. Courier so I'm going to save all my pennies ;)

I think that's the best that can be done for now. Still, that leaves a heck of a lot to shoot: from the Courier headed planetside to the spinning Courier at the end. Would be great though if FD could help by moving up the LRCs (or ED's equivalent) in the dev process to get them in the game as that is a really important part of the intro and perhaps renaming a station to "Frontier" to really nail it, that is if there already isn't one in the game someplace.

just to give you an idea that this project KErrash is proposing is actually doable.. heres an example of a machinima i worked on with my friend AL (Laserdisc) way back when on a really horible game engine. so with the debug cam and cleaver work we can do this in ED if we could pull THIS off way back when.

in the mean time enjoy this little memory lane walk :) (NOT ELITE RELATED IN THE VIDEO BEFORE A MOD MOVES IT! ITS JUST AN EXAMPLE HOW THE COMMUNITY CAN POOL ITS RESOURCES)

This video btw won Machinima of the year in 2008 :) (was proud to have done the audio mixing on this)

the hardest part is surprisingly getting the eagles and the courier jumping in to the system then carrying on the motion as they speed up
