Frontier is far, far away from the players desire

As in reality, any exploration has it's risks. Can't keep everything vanilla and basic. If you're going out to explore in an area you know could hold threats, that's a risk and that's the risk people chose to take. It's good to see Frontier is giving some challenge and some risk to the game like this. Bonus points for them for doing this as they did.

I just came back from a 14 hour road trip, knowing that car issues are a risk with every road trip. Sure enough, had to reroute due to a massive accident (it was on the news in New Mexico) and then had a car break down. All part of the experience and the risks just like with the Gnosis.

But if you want to play it safe, you can stay in the Bubble and do the generic stuff people have been doing since day 1...

Most of the explorers I know don't mind exploration being more dangerous, but dangers without any exploration to go with it is the issue here. Frontier took an exploration trip and turned it into a combat only event, at the expense of content which explorers were very much looking forward to. It's this common trend by Frontier which is the crux of the problem.

Also, I just got back from riding 14 hours too on my Harley yesterday. We ran back before the big rain came in, this summer has been terrible weather for riding. [mad]

Eagle eye reported that the gnosis had been targeted for attack by thargoids a week out. By decoding in game signals.... there was a week's notice it was happening.... plus the Galnet article about heavy thargoid and hydra presence.

Thargoids have been around for a year. I travel through areas with Thargoids all the time. Never been attacked by one ever. Hardly even seen them. Why would I all of a sudden believe I would have to fight them on an advertised exploration event even if we were warned about them. They’ve NEVER been a threat. So on an advertised EXPLORER content mission all of a sudden FD decides I need to be ready for winter? Lame and bad decision. Lots of combat situations they could have arranged for their sudden change in Thargoid interaction. From the looks of things on most media from this forum to YouTube most people were NOT happy with what happened. Combat pilots I’m sure were happy Winter finally arrived.

To all the unarmed explorers I'm just going to say this:

Even the Enterprise in Star Trek, or the Voyager, who were both exploration vessels, had weapons....

If you go into unknown territory, you might find stuff that wants to hurt you...

Always pack some guns or at least defensive equipment...

So if you got shot by goids at the Gnosis, it's your own fault if you've not been able to defend yourself.

Quit blaming the game or the devs for your lack of judgment.

Yeah... I'm sure those AX weapons and HRP's would have done wonders... except that the Gnosis itself seemed to kill more pilots than anything else. Explorers fault for not bringing anti-ATR ships and gear... oh wait....

Well the Titanic was supposed to be a luxury transport event, which we all know turned out to be a swimming event. So yeah, unplanned things happen unfortunately. Now will people trust more events like this down the road? I think so, but they'll be a lot more cautious which they should be.

Well the weather here has been great all summer, and still nice and warm, though the car didn't like the heat and kept over heating which sucked for the road trip...

Difference being that the Titanic WAS a luxury event that turned into a swimming event... the poor Gnosis Exploration Event didn't start. For the analogy to fit, the Titanic needed to be scuttled in the harbor while the spectators shot at the swimmers lol...

Canonn eventually found the right button to turn off the automated defenses, in the bottom of a locked control panel stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”

I thought Frontier's "solution" to the Gnosis expedition was a good one - on paper. If they had executed it without all the false starts and bugs I'd have called it a win.

I'm in a discord with 500 Elite players.

I participate in all Facebook groups about the game.

And the players' expectations for the Gnosis trip were VERY CLEAR.

The players only wanted to explore an inaccessible area (not a permit locked area)

The vast majority were unarmed explorers!

All Frontier had to do was send them all to an unexplored area. ONLY THAT. NOTHING ELSE.

Okay, the Thargoids could attack on the way (witch-space).

And to get back, everyone should collect materials on the surface of the planets to fix the Mega Ship.

It's so simple!

Just follow the Facebook groups and read the most commented posts...

Why is this so difficult?

Sorry but whatever your expectations were you can go and blame CANONN for that, they instigated this whole mess.

They attempted to bypass mechanics in game to get to a region that's not supposed to be got too, the fact they used an in game mechanic only available to them to do it shows how self important they think they are.

Instead of thanking FDEV for allowing them to be the first to test a new game mechanic, Thargoids attacking a station, they cried that their attempt at cheating/exploiting was not allowed.

+1 for Douglas Adams reference :)

Chill out, stuff like that is rather clever use of game mechanics. If anything the GM (FDEV) should have been more clear in telling "Nope, you can't do that, because I say so."

Can you kindly post a link where FEDEV said THEY were doing an exploration event??
I think the only links you will be able to show me is FDEV talking/ advertising about an ingame group organising an exploration event.

Exploration as the name suggests means looking for something unknown, not knowing what you might possibly come up against.

If i decided to go to the middle of the Amazon too find a new flower that no one knows existed, and i ended getting killed by an animal because i didn't have the foresight to think, damn no one knows what else i might encounter there, perhaps i should bring a gun with me.

That would be entirely down to my lack of foresight.

I think it's time for all these so called explorers to go and read about real life explorers and have a look at the precautions they took with them, maybe they will learn something from that, because you have never seen something happen before does not mean its never going to happen.

Rather clever use of game mechanics is often called an exploit, which FDEV in their T&Cs say is punishable, and you really were punished weren't you :p

And they did say you can't do it, albeit not until the event happened.

Only holiday last week, only just caught up with this, and I agree.

They made an effort to introduce a much requested feature (thargoid station assault) as a surprise, I like that.

And the Hydra's look amazing up close, just not for too long

You've never had a GM who is willing to let you stupidcide your characters, huh? It makes for a better game when you know your GM isn't playing patty cake.

that wasn't going to happen because that area is empty and reserved for future use. like you can assume for any area behind a permit lock.

Why is this so difficult

see above. get your facts straight first and you'll see it's not, and it actually makes sense.

there's your problem. like you have read something sensible on facebook ever [haha]
wow, this generation ...

Even if every animal that you'd ever encountered previously in your life had been contained in a locked box which you had to consciously decide to open first before you were faced with interacting with the beast, and that as far as all available prior evidence suggested, this was in fact the only way that animals are ever encountered?

Tell me, what exactly was it that made you realise ahead of time that a game mechanic that had been in place since January 2017 with absolutely no variation whatsoever had in fact changed?

Gonna take a wild guess at 'nothing at all'.

I'm not spitting mad about it or anything but all I can say is I can't even begin to imagine the dismay some of you must feel every other week you play the game when the Galnet flavortext is just that, since you obviously put such stock in it.

Yeah, if Frontier had implemented real-time attacks on a station or megaship before this, instead of testing it out on the Gnosis for the first time. Then players would have expected the possibility of the Gnosis to be attacked the way it was.

I'm not sure how people can blame the explorers for not expecting it when the Thargoids have been a complete opt-in non-threat since their arrival.

I suspect that some of the people ridiculing explorers are worried that if the forum continues going on about it that Frontier will no longer allow live attacks on megaships/stations/whatever.

I will laugh my behind off the moment I see a thread with someone complaining their home base is under attack from Thargoids.
