So what I think you're saying is that Frontier should be applauded for their variety and multi-genre presence instead of rehashing the same old, same old over and over again like some companies do.

That would be Warner bros who are said to have hired british writers for a game. People speculated it was a Harry Potter game.
Earlier than that, with M.U.L.E. and Pinball Construction set in 1983 (Atari 800 series, C=64, other 8 bit platforms). At that time, they actually had fresh ideas.
Eh, EA is more of a game aggregator than a developer these days. They seem to prefer buying properties rather than creating their own. Aside from Elite, I had never heard of Frontier, even though I've heard of Zoo Tycoon, et. al. I like that they're flexible, and can create different game genres to please their customer base.
It seems a little late to cash in on the Harry Potter series and we've already had the Lego Harry Potter games by Tell Tale, but maybe it could be the spin off, Fantastic Beasts and where to find them? But then again we have no confirmation of which studio is involved.
As far as I know the Bond franchise is currently available, so maybe dusting down some of the old Outsider code to repurpose it for Bond?
There is some speculation about Jurassic Park which would be interesting to see what kind of game FD went for if that was the franchise

in the setting, maybe, but in a sense elite is also a bit of a theme park ... except it's pre-built and you as a cmdr get to ride all the attractions. again and again!

I really do hope it's not the HP franchise. The HP "culture" and world would be so anathema to the ED universe. Planet Coaster at least makes sense in a city or station park and is a simulation whereas the HP franchise would invariably have to be a kid's fantasy story in whatever game form, rpg or otherwise.
The recent Rolling Stones article with Braben explains a little why the next Elite was delayed so long after FFE. I think Frontier could also make their own Flight Simulator or Euro Truck Simulator, or DeusEx. That could also segue into ED atmospheric planets, cityscapes, and spacelegs. (DeusEx like adventures in the massive stations, cities)
