Anyone else think they just released thargoids to de-rail pve mode requests ?
Or is it merely coincidence? Who knows? Yet another mystery in the Elite universe (sounds or weird ethereal music playing the background).

There is no PvP nor PvE mode.
True - however there is one mode where direct PvP is impossible, one mode where it is entirely possible and an unlimited number of Private Groups where the members can choose to engage in it or not.
.... and the design information in the FAQ allows for the possible implementation multiple Open groups (modes that form part of the game) to suit different play-styles where the rules can be different.
I agree about one mode where direct PvP is not possible. But the 2 others are equivalent in direct PvP engagement. The only difference is PG has restricted members.
About Muliple Open groups in FAQ. I can t find it right now (on mobile) but will take a look.
FAQ- Elite: Dangerous
How does multiplayer work? You simply play the game, and depending on your configuration (your choice) some of the other ships you meet as you travel around are real players as opposed to computer-controlled ships. It may be a friend you have agreed to rendezvous with here, or it may be another real player you have encountered by chance. All players will be part of a “Pilot’s Federation” – that is how they are distinguished from non-players – so you will be able to tell who is a player and who is a non-player easily.
You will be able to save your position in certain key places (probably just in space stations, but possibly while in hyperspace too, if we feel it is needed). A save-and-quit option will be freely available at those points, as will the subsequent reload, but there will be a game cost for a reload following player death. Your ship will still be intact in the condition it was when the save occurred, but there will be a game currency charge (referred to as an insurance policy) for this. This is to prevent the obvious exploit of friends cooperating and killing each other to get each other’s cargo. If you can’t pay, then it will accumulate as an in-game debt, and the police may chase you!
There are no multiplayer lobbies, and the game will be played across many servers, augmented by peer-to-peer traffic for fast responses. Session creation and destruction happens during the long-range hyperspace countdown and hyperspace effect (which is a few seconds only), so is transparent to the player.
We have the concept of “groups”. They can be private groups just of your friends or open groups (that form part of the game) based on the play styles people prefer, and the rules in each can be different. Players will begin in the group “All” but can change groups at will, though it will be possible to be banned from groups due to antisocial behaviour, and you will only meet others in that group.
It's here, last paragraph:
You can keep quoting that stuff until you're blue in the face but guess what, stuff happens, things change, stuff will get added and dropped and none of us know where it will go. You can't expect a ten year plan not too evolve over that time
Of course - however the game is not finished - and it may be something that is yet to be implemented....
True and maybe they will implement it with a separate BGS too

"Oh hi there lovely chap! It's great seeing you coming to our station with Artifacts, intending to shut it down, right in front of our faces without us being able to do anything about it. Have a good day to you sir and everyone would like to inform you that you are welcome to shut down more of our stations as well!"
This is what Open PvE is.
People need to understand that conflicting interests actually exist within this game. Private and Solo already create enough problems about them and yet everyone has to accept that, but being forced to observe those working against you do it right in front of your face and being unable to retaliate directly? Now that's just insult to injury.

Exactly. Where is my immershun if I can't shoot a ship in front of me?
If it's implemented I want instant ship transfers, faster SC, micro FSD jumps, FSD jumps direct to stations. All the things people calling for this fought against
As there would be no requirement to play in such a mode, there's no need to play in a mode where you could not shoot at any ship in front of you....
you know.. i fully agree with the above, BUT with the very important small print of, when plans DO change, i think the devs owe it to the users to give us a heads up and tell us feature X has changed and the logic behind it.
The reason being threads like this. it would be much better for my sanity to know what is and what isnt still part of the plan....
FD did exactly that when they dropped plans for offline mode.
change happens, I get that, but keeping users informed is key imo.
The only difference, compared to the game at present, would be the possibility of seeing the player if they chose to play in Open-PvE (rather than Solo or a Private Group) when engaging in such activity - or affecting Faction influence, Community Goals, Powerplay for that matter.
Adding an Open-PvE mode would not create new ways to achieve these things that are not already available in Solo or Private Groups.
