Frontier VR Developers -> REACT ! SIMPLE fix to double our effective solution. WHY ?!

Please make the TEXT in the HUD have his own separation <xml> token. so that we can change the TEXT, and no other colors (like red, yellow, red in the radar).

Messing with the HUD colors with the <MatrixRed, Green, Blue> parameters is not the solution...

Thank you

It requires a bit more than that sadly, at least compared to the current setup.
We have several text colors, for example in the starport services there is even red text which is very hard to read. (when an item is too expensive)

If it's an XML tag then we need several of them, for each category of text.
Also for DK2 owners it should default to the right colors as many people just want to play and not to modify xml files.

In general it makes not much sense to make those things configureable, they can just make two color design. One for DK2 and one the others and add a configuration parameter to switch it on or off directly next to the Oculus options.

How hard can it be; it's just software....

I would really like that Frontier implements this coloring change. It would tremendously help Rift owners. Elite Dangerous really is the best VR example out there of a viable game with the Rift. It could be so much better as a showcase of a space sim well done, and of a game with VR in mind being equally well done! :)

For heavens sake Lirezh...no-one disagrees that the colour change would make a difference to the readability of the text! On that, I and many others wholeheartedly agree.

My issue is the tone you take with your posts, as if Frontier employed monkeys, and should jolly well buck up and fix this yesterday because you know how easy it all is, being a developer. And as a developer you should appreciate that this hardware is in development....ie: not consumer ready. Yes, Frontier stated ED will be Oculus compatible, and it will be....when Oculus is finally released to the general public.

They know about this issue.
They're looking into this issue.
They will be looking at what knock-on effects any proposed changes will make.
They will NOT rush the process because a player overstates and exaggerates the problem, and demands them to 'REACT!'

Well it's a fact they don't rush.
If my tone was not the friendliest it is because this error should not have happened in the first place and for sure not stayed like that during the whole beta phase.
It's more than time to correct this bug, lots of minor issues have been corrected but the biggest and most simple fix to make DK2 work well on Elite has been left out for unknown reasons.

All games usually try to have a unique look, game designers choose a color range to make all screenshots and videos distinct.
You see a screenshot and immediately can tell "ahh that's Elite Dangerous".
That might be the reason why they delayed it but it's more than time to fix the issue properly.

Aside that, Oculus is realeased to the public.
Oculus support means DK2 support and not CV support and they did not state anything else anywhere on any page I could find so far.
If you say that's not true, please point to the official statement that tells DK2 is not supported.

Graywolfe, it's really not a choice or opinion.
I am very surprised from your sentences, however there is not much to discuss about it.

I'm sorry but trying to tell me that my opinion doesn't matter is just plain rude. If you want anyone to take anything you say seriously, devs included, stop insulting people; trust me on this...

The hardware of the DK2 delivers twice the resolution and no pixel positioning errors when green is used.
Of course it is free to you to prefer a heavily superior image quality, however I can say for sure that the large majority of the DK2 users would be VERY happy to get the color changes.
Simply because it changes ED from a "nice demo" to a "nice game", with the current colors and without matrix mod it's more a demo than a game on VR.

Did you even try it in green? I posted examples on the first page of this thread. Do yourself a favor and move the browser with the examples over to your extended desktop of the DK2.
Then look at the difference, you can even make the text smaller and green stays readable while red completely fades away.
You are welcome to prefer another color still but you will have to recognize more than twice the "accuracy" you receive from the change. (twice resolution, no pixel distortion).

This is not something to oppose, if you like VR and would like to see good implementations then you need to support movements that aim to teach developers how to design for VR.

The orage color used is a perfect example of development without enough knowledge about the hardware in use.
With the right knowledge at the right people they would likely have never distributed the game for VR in orange designs. It's like forcing 60 fps vsync and then adding oculus support, it will not work out.

There you go again 'teach developers how to design for VR', 'example of development without enough knowledge about the hardware in use'. Please get down off your high horse and realise that just because this is an Internet forum doesn't mean that everyone else is automatically wrong...

I have no problem with the UI as it stands now in orange. I do not want it to be unilaterally changed to green. There isn't a problem to solve here. As I said before; I have no problem with the developers adding the option to let people change the UI colour, but if they do this then do it in a considered and fully fleshed out way.

I'm well aware of how the different display technologies work and I'm sure the devs are too, but this doesn't change the fundamental fact that there really isn't a problem with things as they are. Certainly, nothing that warrants the song and dance that you appear to be making out of it.

Man the amount of support they have given the DK2 has been great. As others have said this is the best game out that can use it. Also the DK2 is a developer kit....it is for development and not for consumers. They do not need to make an official statement to the fact that it is supported or not. It is a developing technology and I am sure that by the time the CV is released it will only be better. With that said it does work with the DK2 very well.

As for not rushing I think they have a great record at the rate they have released content and features. So tell me of another game with anywhere close to this level of support that has done better in shorter time.

Lirezh. I think you are just being awkward for the sake of it.
When you bought your DK2 you brought a Developer Kit version 2. Note the very subital wording there of Developr Kit.
Before your order for the Developer Kit was accepted, you will have ticked a check box that read.

I understand this hardware is intended for developers and it is not a consumer product.

What this means is you brought a device for development purposes only and you have no right to expect consumer level support. It is sold with the purpose of working on development projects not playing games. At this point there is no guarantee that the rift will actually ship. Facebook, unlikely as it sounds, could cancel the project.

Now, it's great that FD took the time to included support for this unreleased consumer device, and even better that they decided to release support to the community. They didn't have to do this. The fact that you, me and many others are using a developer device to play a game is Irrelevant. IT IS NOT WHAT THE DEVICE WAS INTENDED FOR.

Total respect to the FD dev that convinced DB that he could add rift support, he did an an amazing job taking a product that was not designed from the ground up for the rift. AND still manged to produce what is widely regarded as one of the best VR experiences available.

I have no doubt that FD will continuing making the rift experience amazing. In the meantime. It is NOT, repeat NOT a bug that the text is unclear. So please cut the devs some slack and stop demanding a fix, we all agree some changes to the colour will make it better but they will provide better support on their terms not yours. In the meantime, change the xml and enjoy the Galaxy.

Sure it's nice they support Oculus but that's a simple business decision and not done out of being friendly. That's how companies work these days after all.
There are ten thousands of Oculus owners out there and a large chunk of them bought ED because of Oculus support.
This is a multi million USD salepoint already and as Oculus aims for millions of sold consumer devices the potential for a small company like Frontier is amazing.
I personally think that more Oculus customers will buy the game than others in the long run if the situation will stay like this (no other competitor with a similar good experience).

I only bought ED during early access because of the Oculus support, as (likely) have the majority of DK2 owners.
Out of that comes a right for proper support.
Either something is supported or not, there is no acceptable "half support" once a game reaches the release state.

We DK2 owners deserve a fix of it and from all the existing problems in DK2 support (like galaxy and system map) this one is the one with biggest effect on usability and smallest amount of development time.
And if some of the "we" prefer unreadable text and "half" support that's fine for me, we still deserve a fix.

If some people are not happy with it, I can accept that. Also accept that I will not give up on it until it's fixed ;)
And I hope more will actively join in to "vote" for our case.

P.S. @Apostle:
I agree that the rate of features is better than average. I'm not unhappy with Frontier in general. I'm just disappointed that a major problem is being ignored for so long.
In general Frontier is doing an exceptional job. With this one exception :)

cool thread.....very useful....i just dont understand why the title of this tread is so.....strange....why you didnt make some BETTER-OCULUS-RES-WITH-GREEN-LETTERS title ;)

Tried to annoy the developers a little bit so whenever they read the VR section they see this thread on top until the fix has been issued :)

I think the OP is being a bit harsh... The inclusion of OR support is a bonus and a great one at that. So beating on the devs for a lack if advanced tweaks is unfair, however, Using the green setting is much better, so thanks for that!

I just tested it and yea... It's totally the case... Green is really the way to go... Since the oculus rift, you can see the pixel rather easily, being that close... Only green makes it a world around better. We need a WAY to fix this ingame! There are many games around that has HUD color sliders! Not like it would be hard to do! Hell it hads some customization into the game that players would enjoy. Have the ship hud the way they want it. Even if they dont use the Rift

Fellow DK2 user here. I can see what OP means about the colours making text hard to read but honestly it's the size of it that makes the most difference. To even read the mission statement on my left panel, I have to lean to nearly outside my positional tracking range.

Seeing how they're the problem areas are holograms, wouldn't it be simpler to just enlarge them or move them closer to the player? It's not like they have to fit within the bounds of a monitor when you can look around freely.

I think an adjustable font size would be nice or a special rift setting that makes the holograms bigger.

The OP is obviously far superior to the Frontier developers. You can tell that by the way the post is clearly well thought out and argued.

I mean for a start the title starts us off on the right path.

"REACT ! SIMPLE fix to double our effective solution. WHY ?!"

We have a solution, not only that its an effective one. So can you take our already effective solution then double it please. assume that given our already effective solution is to edit a config file the OP is asking for a change so we need to edit 2 config files? or maybe make changes in 2 seperate sections of the same file?

"And we all suffer and wait patiently .."

Indeed we do, never has the plight of the poor early adopter been so bleak as to be made to suffer with a slightly blurry resolution on pre production development hardware.

"I personally can hardly read the original text at all, the green one .."

We want green text, its obvious we want green text, you should have known all along we want green text, wait, what?

"I am quite disappointed that the VR developers did not fix this already."

Absolutely. This 27" 2.5K monitor I have on my desk is absolutely useless at displaying graphics.

"And second step is optimization of the game itself to use a green favorization on VRs."

For sure because the technology of VR headsets is absolutely static and wont be changing at all, ever.

"We need to make our voices loud, this is a tiny change I want to have it."

And we always get what we want don't we. Its great that we live in a world where nobody starves, there is no war, race isn't an issue, and sexual orientation is an irrelevance.

This thread is pointless. If the OP had done some due diligence, he would have found that the devs have already stated that the "color matrix" feature is going to be expanded in the near future to allow for full featured HUD color customization, and not in the form of editing xml files. The version they checked in was them being nice, since it's good enough for people to play with. You don't need to be loud, you don't need to sell your point, and the devs are already aware of the advantages of the green color, and of their players desire to modify the HUD to any color they want. All you have to do is look around the forums a bit, and rest assured that the feature is coming.
