I'm not a KS, I didn't discover it in time, but I am a Beta Backer and a LEP holder. I used to play the original Elite (quite a bit considering we lost the manual filled with the keys to access the game... I used to guess the password) on Atari ST in the 80s when I was in primary school. I was actually googling Atari emulators and games I had played when I was young, when I discovered the modern incarnation of Elite was in beta. So I bought in. I pretty much got what I thought was a modern overhaul of the original game. So I didn't play much as I felt it was lacking somewhat, for a new game in 2014 anyway. Although I did follow its development and more was added and eventually Horizons, which I really wanted and so I elected to buy a LEP because I had cash at the time and because I had been reading about the future of ED and really liked the way it sounded. I still didn't play much.
When I bought the beta I figured I may as well upgrade my PC so as to enjoy the game the way it was meant to be played. My laptop was struggling even with the beta so I built a brand spanking new 'budget' gaming computer. I honestly had about 50 hours in game until I bought a Rift this year in May. Now as you may or may not know a 'budget' computer wont run VR too well so there was more upgrading before I bought the Rift too. Not to mention the cost of the Rift. Since May I've put in well over 200 hours - that's pretty impressive for me who rarely gets into games that much. Especially MMOs. Especially taking into account how many times I've been sick with the flu this winter and been unable to play in VR. This last few weeks I picked up a nice HOTAS, not a *really* nice one, but still a nice one. Now I'm playing every day. And I want more upgrades to make the experience even better.
I must admit that there's bugs, and space still feels a little empty (pun intended) ...but now I love it, VR and HOTAS have sealed the deal, and I'm glad I walked the road of investment and optimism. It was worth the wait. I've probably got my $1 an hour game play that so many people quote as far as buying Elite is concerned. Hardware works for other games I play too so it doesn't count, but enjoying Elite more was often a deciding factor in spending. I must admit I was a little worried about the dropping of the seasons model my LEP purchase was based on, and as we don't know how the future will pan out for LEP holders (do we? I haven't seen anything) I am a little concerned about getting *my* monies worth (I don't really follow the dollar an hour model myself, I'm about actual enjoyment). That LEP was expensive. Sure I think its great that all Horizons owners get next years content free, as it is things that should be a part of Horizons *and* maybe it will help lessen the woeful negativity in the main forum. I almost never go there because of it. I've never once had a whinge about how, in the past, I personally have felt about the lack of compelling content.
Other than I am looking forward to Beyond, I'm not going to comment on anything else as I don't follow closely enough to have an informed opinion.
