Frostpunk

Watched several playthrough videos Keralis made and it looks really fun.
I'm not going to buy it right now, because I have a backlog of games, already, but it's definitely on the list for this year. :)

I buy very few games, this might join my small library. If only it were steamos/linux.

Second that. Cant be bothered to boot on windows these days.. With so many good titles coming to steam/linux i have a nice backlog sitting there. Hope that Vulkan adoption will help cross platform releases.

This game sure is different, and there are a lot of interesting (yet hard) choices to be made. Beautiful (yet dreadful) setting. You can almost feel the harshness.

But the fact the game ends after 45 ingame days kills it for me. A city/colony builder with a time limit? No thanks. It ends up reducing it'0s scope to a miniscule degree. Makes it feel more like a glorified puzzle game than an actually city/colony builder.

Really? I dont know how long the day cycle is in Frostpunk, but reading all the reviews i dont think thats a problem for me. Also i think that might be something which will get modded at some point.

I have not played the game yet but I would not think 40, 45 or whatever the days are is a problem on itself.

As long as the number of activities in each day is reasonably engrossing and meaningful and the game lasts a reasonable amount of actual real hours I do not see the issue, other than perhaps breaking the suspension of disbelief for some.

I can’t remember how many “days” the game They Are Billions usually last for example (and which is based on a similar capped time survival premise, just substitute zombies for cold), but I am sure it is equally laughable in terms of realistic technology development times and building times etc.

Had a look at it - yes it is kinda a city builder - but I don't think that's what they are aiming for - it's a story to be told. I think an endless mode with deepened city building is the "natural" way to go to expand this. But it won't have the complexity of a true city sim.

I haven't hit the end yet - so far I don't find it very hard. Well, I restarted twice - but that was mostly for feeling out consumption rates and build orders.

Oh yes.. i like it. A lot. Ordering grannies to get some more coal in the middle of the night is a hard decision but it had to be made.

Completed the main story. I was a bit (wossname?) complacent, it became a bit harder than I expected. Still, managed without a death. That is a lie - I executed an offender for crimes aganinst the city. Had to rise that content because I put these hastily erected resource collectors on 24h duty for coal. There was an event that quite severely impacted my very efficient coal mining.
The city survived, tho - under New Order.

I started the next scenario and that is different - you get only engineers so gut luck getting that food chain running.

Verdict: I like the setting. I like the story. I like the way they tell the story with a sound city building. Beyond the main story and the additional scenario - not sure if there is another one - the content is rather thin. I wonder if there be an option to edit scenarios for players.
When you pick a mission they left a hint that additional stuff (scenarios?) will be released. I have no idea if that will be paid dlc or free.
I dint mind the expense but depending on your views, it might be priced a tad high.

So it's like a limited Rimworld game with an ice planet setting with prettier graphics.

Hmmmm, no but knda yes. Think away the Rimworld characters and their individual progress and we are kinda there. Story is more static I'd say and has more of a crafted arc. Rimworld is rather lining up events for you to overcome - not a story in a traditional sense.
