Newcomer / Intro Frustrated

I have been in the Elite Dangerous for a few weeks and gotten nowhere.
I go to the bulletin board.
I pick a mission ... go to the galaxy map and the search never works.
I put in the name of the location and nothing ever is found.
I even enter names of places I plainly see on screen and nothing ever found.
I do hear a bleep bleep sound though.
So I have to waste lots of time scrolling through the map to find the destination.
I go there and there is never anything there (mission has not expired).
Never any bad guys. Never any hostilities. Zip nada. Empty space and other players looking for the same thing.
It's comical ... I once went to a nav beacon and there were a dozen of us all scanning each other ... silly waste of time.
I go to a location to pick up some black boxes.
How they expect me to find a couple black boxes in the vastness of space is beyond me but I go out of desperation.
Something appears on screen for a second as I exit hyperspace but ... what a surprise ... I have to fly into the sun to get it (no ... it's not on the other side). So I do that and almost burn up ... by the time I cool off it is gone. Once again left with nothing to see here.
So far this game has been a complete waste of time and I am almost out of credits wasted on rabbit hunts.
Is the map search busted? Is the bulletin board busted? Are missions busted?
There is no shortage of advice on the internet about how to make a quick buck but I've tried some and maybe since the game is constantly changing the ones I've tried no longer work.
help

Slow down, one at a time.

Black boxes:
Cruise at 30 km/s, look for USS. Usually takes me 2 or 3 tries to find one containing the objects I need.

Hostiles:
What kind of hostiles? Pirates usually hang out at RES.
Specific targets, like generals, are like Black Boxes above.

Galaxy Map:
What are you searching for? The Galaxy map doesn't supply a search method for systems, you need exact system name you need to go to.
You can't search for stations either.

OK - Nav Search, you have to click the [>] at the end of the search box, Enter (or whatever) doesnt do it
Not sure what missions you are doing to for there to be "nothing there"
If you need to hunt for Black Boxs or other such stuff, a USS is best found by going to the location and stopping (your ship will still say 30m/s or something). Then when a USS appears, you just point at it and enter it. The faster you are going, the further away the USSs appear and longer it takes to get to them.
Beware with these "locate" missions, the stuff is normally illegal, so only take those missions at a platform, or if you like smuggling and dodging the station scans.

So the search for Generals is for USS also? I was looking at ships and scanning them. :( No wonder I have not found one. :) Good luck DangerMuncher. You will get the hang of things but it does take awhile at times. :)

Just so the OP knows what you mean USS = unidentified signal source. You will see these if you fly around a bit in the system.

You can search for station names, it will show the system with the station in, you will need to look at the system to see it though.

Virtually any mission that wants you to find or attack a specific item or ship will be fulfilled by looking in USSs

Yep, a USS is basically a "random encounter", which is weighted towards things that will fullfill your current missions. Dont worry about missing one, another will be along shortly.
The exception is those totally empty systems that have no NAV point. USS can take an age to spawn, I recommend you dont take seeker missions in empty systems.

Oh, and dont get frustrated, there is normally someone around here with some experience, and all of them except me are really nice

Thanks everyone. I'll try again. At least this forum works. I'm sure I pressed the > a few times but I probably just pressed ENTER mostly on the searching.
I did try waiting 5 min for a USS to spawn ... how long should I wait ?
And finally ... since no one volunteered ... what's the latest best way for me to make a quick buck since I am flat broke?

Hostiles as in one mission said there was a battle going on and I could go to a place and shoot bad guys for money.
What does RES mean?

Point with what ? mouse doesn't work in cockpit. Enter it where?
So are you saying to slow down and they will get nearer ? You making me crazy.

What does RES mean?

Resource Extraction Site. They are destinations found in some planetary rings. They won't show in your navigation pane while you are docked, but once you are flying about and not too far from the planet with rings, any RES there should show up in the list. Be sure you do not approach the planetary rings edge-on, though, they will knock you right out of super cruise and if you're going fast enough you will take hull damage.

Center the USS in your view and press the key/button you have bound to select the target directly in front of you.

Since USS spawn randomly near where ever you happen to be in super cruise, if you throttle to 0 while super cruising one will eventually spawn relatively close to you and you'll be able to reach safe distance/speed fairly quickly (this is done just like dropping out of super cruise at a space station).

Trading is the fastest way to make a buck at the moment, but make sure you trade between stations at a profit or you will loose it all. Mining can give you a slower but more secure income.

There is a small dot in the centre of your cockpit view, point with that by moving your whole ship around, basically you point with your ship. With the dot in to circle of the USS hit "T" to target it, then approach and drop out of Super cruise as you would when approaching a station to dock. When you are in normal space you will see something, or group of somethings, on you 360 sensors. Move your ship to point at the something and when the dot is over it hit "T" to target. Then go get it.
