Agree game is frustrating
The game for new players is horrible imo. My first launch the ship automatically sped off and crashed into some type of ramp. I didn't hit the speed button or anything and was taking it slow when it just accelerated and bam, hit the ramp. The getting started instructions don't describe how to take off or land. There's no vertical take off key that I could see. The keys are disorganized, not intuituive and don't follow conventional wasd. I didn't see anything that describes how to use the hyperdrive. They should have a tutorial on how to use the hyperdrive and taking off and landing. I've been trying to land on an outpost station and just bounce around the landing bay. It seems you should be able to hover over the pad and drop straight down. I don't think any new player should have to spend hours just figuring how to take off and land and use the hyperdrive. its a game not pilot school. Well you can require it but people lose interest real fast. As for mouse controls they too are horrible. With the sliders you have to eyeball the sensitivity levels. They should have a number designation for the length of the slider/ruler. Also when first starting the mouse is way too sensitive. So far I feel like I've wasted $50.

The learning curve in the original elite was pretty steep too. You think trying to dock ED is hard? You should have seen it back then!
BTW, using a joystick with a rotation axis makes docking pretty straightforward.

If you go to the training part you have three tutorials on how to take off, land and travel. I have done the take off and land part, but the travel crashed when I tried it, will try it again now.
It has taken me a bit of time to get the hang of landing. I dont use WSAD but HOTAS which also makes it interresting... but to me I find the challenge fun and while it is more than I expected when I first heard of ED (I thought it would be the EvE style get close and then press a button to dock basicly) it is also a lot more challenging and fun... you will get the hang of it eventually thought and it will become a part of the game that needs doing, but until then I find it fun.

Oh Don't get me started on landing. Before I went out in the open game I did 10 launches and 10 landings. I thought I had the hang of it. My first launch was from a platform. No bugs, until I bounced off an invisible wall hidden in the dark. Lots of sparks no damage.
My first landing, also on a pad. I put on a show trying to get aligned. People were around commenting on it. In all I played about 4 hours with 3 restarts. The only time I exploded happened when my throttle got stuck in reverse. While I was fiddling around in the opposition's menu someone shot me down. It wasn't the station, I was backing away from it and had cancelled my landing clearance. I didn't even have any cargo.
All in all it was a pretty good session. I applied my paint and decal and learned a lot.

As Mikie said, do the tutorials, they are in teh main menu just before START IIRC. They also have link to video tutorials. Also play with your settings to get the right feel especially if you using a stick or HOTAS. And ED is pretty much a space flight sim, not too hardcore but yeah it's not a 'quick' game for a beginner
I've managed to find and kill ONE trader for my bounty mission in the correct system doing what I believe is the correct thing [flying round the system in supercruise mode investigating unknown signals?] in 3 hrs. Surely this can't be right? What am I doing wrong? It's been an exercise in sheer frustration tonight. I'm at a total loss as to what to do next to change my luck in finding another trader to kill. It's turning out to be 35 quid spent on stare at the screen for 3 hrs with nothing to do. I don't want to give up the mission as the alternative is cargo runs.
I found logging out and in again allowed me to get docking permission next time I asked. I completed the mission with seconds to spare and made my creds, relief!
Yes it is frustrating but soooo rewarding when you manage to achieve something as simple as delivery mission. Keep going. I have found you can cancel missions on the screen to the left (1)

I've been playing for a month, and never seen so many small ships, at most small orbitals.
The turn around at the moment for landing at a station is very slow, atm. myself included. You have to look at bulletin boards, ship configs, repairs. generally get used to menus.
I am guilty also of just taking my time in a small station and forgetting the queue outside.
I kept trying to request landing,but eventually got in with 10 mins to spare on a timed mission.
This will get better as busy starting system, gets diluted by pilots venturing away from the busy zone.
Some new players, request a docking space with a number assigned, that is on the opposite side of the station and not noticed.
So I reducing the number of available slots. also not noticing the landing direction (orange number above the landing pad orientation)
There may have been a bug slowing the release of free docking spaces, but it was frustrating queuing with the urgency of my delivery,
but that was great to add to my suspense.

Heh as a total n00b on landing having to coordinate a stick with two throttle controls (throttle and vertical thrust) as well as rolling (pedals) and all the rest is hard... I have done about 15 traning landings so far and I have managed to land perhaps 5 of those. Right now I need a break because I am exhausted from just doing these landings...
It is really a shame that the docking/undocking training was not part of the combat demo, but considering that I am one of those nutjobs that thrive when things are hard I am already a happy customer even if I havent even started the actual game yet. I feel that I need to get a hang of the landing part before I sit my a** down in a "real" ship that can go boom.

I'm a noob like you guys too, having spent weeks on the combat tutorial I find it easier making money in combat, I killed my first bad guy last night, an Expert cobra and made 24000 credits bounty and it was easy, far easier than the cobra in the Incursion training mission! So if you can get say 5 levels into the Incursion training mission, combat with in game NPCs is a breezee
As metioned above, the docking station was probably full. On the smaller platforms/outposts, sometimes you have to wait for someone else to leave before the station will grant you permission. I like to fly right down next to them and stare menacingly as they launch
