Newcomer / Intro frustrated

I used to "play" the previous versions of Elite in its first incarnations, and I am now retired and was looking forward to continuing with the latest version.
Unfortunately I have got precisely nowhere. I have looked at the videos too.

I cant get to the areas I want to trade or fight in , the Galaxy and systems maps are just too confusing and it is not possible to save progress to revert to a previous successful point reached.

I really don't have the time to try to keep banging my head against this particular brick wall. Perhaps future developments may make it a bit more user friendly.

Love the graphics though.

Is there anything specifically that we can help with?
It is confusing and difficult at first. I found it far easier to just get the hang of the game where I was, rather than trying to be somewhere, which requires learning everything all at once.
Save progress is long gone, I'm afraid, but the free Sidewinders mean you can mess about whilst learning in a risk-free manner.
If there are specific issues, then feel free to ask; this tends to be a fairly helpful place!

You're retired and don't have time to learn how to play? :S

Unfortunately this game does take quite a bit of time to get used too, I didn't even get into combat for about a month of playing as it took me that long to have some kind of decent control that I had a hope of even getting a shot to hit.

Yes I'm a slow learner and yes I've never really been that good at games, but hey that won't stop me from trying and each time I try, I learn, I improve and I feel a great sense of achievement especially when I started being able to land without having to spend nearly all of the 10 mins allotted to actually get docked.
