Engineers fsd increase - max fuel per jump

can someone explain to me a little bit about max fuel per jump?

I know that max fuel per jump can increase fsd range, but it's not technically part of a standard roll... or is it? Does anyone know how much the max fuel per jump can be increased with a lvl 5 roll?

I'm a little confused about this type of effect in general, I know for example weapons have a whole bunch of secondary effects, and there's a chance to proc them, or you can "pay" with rank to get a guarantee... But fsd for example according to inara should affect
Mass
Integrity
Power Draw
Optimised Mass

There's no mention of any special effects, and yet it can give the chance for increased fuel per jump. Similarly in another thread people mentioned something about a shield gen roll giving + optimised mass even though the roll doesn't directly change optimised mass.

So it seems like various other engineered components can have other things changed, is there any more information on this somewhere?

There are many secondary effects that don't appear on any primary mod. (and no, I don't know of any definitive list of them)

Fuel per jump is one of the more straightforward ones - You can simply use more fuel at once, therefore it increases the range.
It isn't anything drastical, though. Because the fuel consumption increases logarithmically with distance, it's not like you get 7% extra range for 7% FPJ increase. More like 1%

thanks, I assumed it wasn't as drastic, but I was tinkering with the value in coriolis and while not crazy it can be significant depending on how much it can actually increase. I wish there was more info on secondary effects, also if anyone has any numbers about fuel consumption specifically (not the math, just how much it can increase via secondary effect)

Yes, it's a nice little bonus, but it's not worth rolling like mad, trying to get it.

And I quite like the uncertainty around secondaries, actually. Though I understand that for OCD min-max junkies it has to be maddening. :D

So what he said.

There's a fair few rolls posted here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=5137343 to give you an idea of the possible fuel bonuses.

I got an amazing roll at +54.8% optimal mass boost. In theory that means my range should have been 53.57ly laden and 58.76 max on my current Anaconda. However a 4.5% fuel use per jump means that is 54.49ly laden and 59.73ly max.

In short getting the %optimal mass is the primary goal and the fuel use bonus is just that, a nice to have bonus extra.

http://Coriolis.edcd.io can give you a good tool to play with and experiment. I suspect max fuel use per jump goes up to something like 7% or 8% absolute best case but getting that with a 55%+ optimal mass boost is near impossible.

wait...how are you getting over max opt mass roll?? secondary effect of + opt mass or result of secondary max fuel??

Yep, I've got I think +48% as a primary effect plus another almost 4% as secondary.
I was also extremely lucky with the mass of the FSD itself. Absolutely terrible power consumption, though.
