FSD or Fuel Scoop ? Bigger is better, but which one ?

I've been outfitting a new ship for PAX, the Buze Cruzer. Getting rid of the AspX that I had been using for this. An Annie has a better jump range and carries more drunken louts in the hold. Prior to purchasing the 'Cruzer, I tried to use my AspX to take two trips out on a Science mission. I had to sacrifice with a class 3A fuel scoop. MISTAKE. It took huge amounts of time to refill the tanks, negating the time saved with a Grade-5 FSD upgrade. With the time parked above glowing gas blobs I became philosophical, wondering if it was worth taking two cranky scientists teams, versus just one and my much better scoop.

So, question to the Forums : If you had to choose, do you go with the max FSD and a minimal scoop, or a smaller FSD and bigger scoop ? Either one hurts travel time.. With the smaller FSD and big scoop, you do a hundred small jumps but never have to park while you fuel up... with the small scoop / big FSD, you waste any time gained by trying to fuel up a tea-spoon at a time.

You go big on both and accept the hit to jump range. Simple.

I've switched from an ASP to a DBX since the patch and I'd definitely say bigger FSD and smaller scoop. DBX gets me there much quicker :cool:

8B Fuel scoop and about 2 extra fuel tanks.

Nothing less.

You'll be thanking your lucky stars 50K into your journey, trust me.

Oh yes, largest A-grade FSD, obviously. Can always jump less but cannot jump further when you need to..........Neutron boost jump into a dead-zone happens.......not good.......
 
The fuel scoop doesn't affect mass, so a big scoop won't change your range. Bigger scoops do have an effect on power consumption though.

I've got a pretty cool running AspX with a 55ly jump range and a 6a scoop. Just finished a 33kly buckeyball run in 635 jumps averaging 45 seconds a jump, and never once had to actually stop to scoop. I was always able to get enough in the FSD cooldown time. While tempting to try out a DBX, not sure I'm going to give up my Buckeye any time soon.
 
I'm not sure I understand the premise; FSD goes to its dedicated slot, and engineering it for range always reduces fuel use for a given jump (it may allow you to make longer a jump that uses more fuel, but you can decide that when plotting). Also, fuel scoops have zero weight and therefore do not reduce range. So why would it be either-or between the two?

Now, more passenger capacity and/or more fuel tanks can be a trade-off for scoop size, personally I would pick bigger scoop.

Been reading this thread trying to figure out what the heck is going on. Are people assuming a larger scoop affects mass? @Op- Go big on both, credits is the only limit.

I think the OP was indicating that they used the big slot for bigger cabins, instead of the scoop, and nothing to do with mass limiting the jumps...just the smaller scoop.

Ah. That makes more sense.

Edit: Also, personally I think a 6B is big enough for a Conda. It fills up fast enough that I can skim a star until I'm lined up with the next jump, and it's much cheaper than the 6a

Anything over a Class 4 scoop is fine for an AspX anyway. I have a 4A on mine, but I'm in no rush. Subject to budget, get the best one you can afford. As for FSD A rated and engineered preferred.

Going along the more general fuel scoop fun facts...the fuel scoop is one of those cases where size is generally more important than class...a 6c scoop is cheaper and scoops far more than a 5a, with a lower power draw to boot.

Eh. It's a little too slow for my tastes. I think 5B is perfect for that ship. Fits my requirement of filling up by the time I'm lined up for the next jump.

I used to run with a 6B in my AspX until I looked at my credit balance and saw I had 100mil in the bank that I wasn't going to spend, so I got a 6A with plenty of rebuys left.
 
Smaller fuel scoops are OK in the bubble. Long distance trips outside the bubble requires a good fuel scoop. The basic parameter is to match the class of the fuel tank with the class of the fuel scoop. This changes when adding fuel tank to a ship that has a fuel tank too small for the ship to start with. A higher class will make scooping faster especially when smuggling or transporting passengers/criminals who don't want to be scanned. No scan passengers who are just demanding can use a lower class fuel scoop. As fuel scoops have no added weight they are more about cost. I've often found in the more expensive ships that the lower scooping rates for a B class fuel scoop is minor compared to the massive cost difference going to the A version. You decide.
