Fuel Jettison

Why is this not a thing? The current method for burning fuel to hit maximum jumprange is time consuming and inaccurate.

A "Jettison to max Jump" would be a convenient option!

It can work if it somehow requires there to be 1T of fuel remaining after the jump. 1T should be enough to scoop, unless you picked a non-scoopable and there are no scoopables nearby in which case "excess stupid" comes to mind.

Lol.

It should include several warnings.

1: Are you sure?
2: Make sure you're jumping to s scoopable...
3:... Otherwise the fuel rats may leave you under "natural selection".

A while ago I might have wondered at the necessecity of this idea but having been recently stuck in a situation after jumping way up galactic north and not being able to find a way back down I can honestly say what a brilliant idea.
After jumping to a very isolated system and automatically scooping up a full tank as soon as I arrived it took ages and ages to burn enough fuel for a jump back to become available. Hours in fact. Got very tempted to hit the self destruct.

I can see this as being useful, though not from the "But I NEED that extra lightyear of jump range because I don't want to make that one extra jump and/or I painted myself into a corner!" viewpoint. But rather from the Fighter Pilot viewpoint. Before getting into a dogfight Fighters would generally dump off their excess fuel tanks to reduce their weight and get increased speed and maneuverability, and we coud do it for the same. Fully loaded tank weighing you down? well if you NEED that much fuel to last the battle chances are you're as good as dead anyway. So dump some of it off and get faster and more nimble to have a better chance of actually winning the fight.

This wouldn't benefit flying bricks I mean Conda's and Pythons/etc much but smaller lighter ships? would make a difference in combat. Not a HUGE difference sure. But a difference.

It's more for an explorers benefit tbh. The extra 2 - 3LY we could get by jumping on empty could be the difference between being able to reach a lot of new places and being stuck at the edge of the galactic rim.

This reminds me of an original Star Trek episode when the shuttlecraft Galileo crashed on a planet and was then able to take off into a sub orbital flight. Spock jettisoned and ignited the remaining fuel as a visual signal so the Enterprise could teleport the survivors from the shuttlecraft. I'm not sure this would work in Elite Dangerous since there might not be a near by rescue vessel.

Seasoned explorers will know its something you'd only use when jumping to a scoopable.

New explorers would find out the first time they did it wrong, just like trying the fuel scooping on T-troll stars.
