Full multi-cannon setup??

I have seen several YouTube videos where people have only multi-cannons and no lasers. I was under the assumption that cannons are fairly useless for shields--is this wrong?

incendiary MC's (an engineer effect) splits the damage between kinetic and thermal (like the railgun), in addition to that it also increases the total damage per shot and lowers the fire rate slightly so they become more long lasting.
Basically they are the best of both worlds.

Also, with a single corrosive MC the potentially "lost" damage to hull gets completely turned on it's head when the target takes 25% more damage from all sources.

Yes, Overclocked Multicannons with Incindiery Rounds + 1 with Corrosive Rounds for hull debuff is a great build for PVE and does wreck NPC shields in seconds, but dont take it to PVE, people use resistance built shields to completely deflect such builds

What about standard multi cannon rounds? I use my ship mostly for exploring and I got great rolls on lightweight mounts but didn't score incinediery rounds.

Regular rounds have very minor effects on shields (when you roll you can adjust and select any effect you want in exchange for loss of reputation)

Seriously? I learn something new everyday. I'm gathering material for my level 5 FSD upgrade, if I don't like the stats I can adjust the roll? I'm at around 100% with felicity and after the FSD upgrade I don't imagine I'll have much for use for her work.

I have 5 standard multicannons on my FDL, level 2 upgrades, and they do just fine against NPCs  They'll strip away all but the largest shields in seconds

You can only choose weapon effects (like incindiery rounds) , can't choose stats that you roll , so no you wont be able to adjust your FSD upgrade appart from regular rolling

That it may be , but you would have more firepower with something like 2 pulse lasers 3 mc's

Aye, but I can put more pips to shields and engines like this. FDL has monster shields so I want to exploit that

Op: only multicannons means you only need to put two pips to weapons

yeah multi c's all round on my Corvette, 1 mod for Corrosive Rounds, rest are incendiary. Just shread's NPC's. I had to go back to lvl 3 with Mr. Blaster dude engie to force roll the effects 4 times, kind of painful, especially getting hold of all those the embedded mod firmware's.

Funny really, I now spend more time in my Cobra and ASP and the Corvette's collecting dust. ASP with grade 5 FSD and D stuff with a bit of dirty drive tuning and shield/booster upgrades with x4 small mine placements has kept me safe for the last few weeks and you can jump to places "..far away in another galaxy" without the brain rot of having to jump 30 times.

How do you get experimental effects on every weapon? I know you can bribe the engineer to get them, but doesn't your influence with them go down every time you do it?

You farm enough grade 1 materials so you can get to grade 3 access. Do 1 grade 3 roll and chose the special effect that you want, now you have 1 weapon with effect you want but back on grade 1 access (because you lose one for forcing special and 1 for choosing special). Then you do again enough grade 1s to get back to grade 3 and then do one of those again. Repeat that until all weapons have grade 3 mod with special effect you want on every weapon. That is most effective way i know. To get grade 3 is easy so its quit fast but some do grade 4 and 5 but that takes much more time usually if you aren't really lucky with material spawns and rolls.

I have a grade 5 overcharged huge multi that does more dps than a huge beam laser. With incendiary rounds the resistance in shields makes the thermal from lasers about as effective as any other but... i can fire my multi for as long as i like and it uses way less power. The only drawback is that eventualy you run out of ammo and that you can dodge projectiles at range

The very definition of grind
