fun at Betelgeuse

Yes.. the big stars are... big. Once you are out in the procedurally generated wilderlands of the galaxy you seem to only find smaller giants, that are, to quote Ren & Stimpy, "Merely Huge"... Anyone seen a supergiant anywhere near the size of Betelguese or VY Canis Majoris out there in the middle of nowhere?... I'm only finding orange and sometimes red giants that reach "screen filling" size at about 150Ls distance.. which is Huge, but not gigantic. :)

I was barely able to get in scan range of Betelgeuse one before I had to drop out of super-cruise to stop getting heat damage. that will be fun to try to land on in horizons

bring your sunscreen.
Too bad we have to wait for a while, the planet has thick atmosphere...

Only this one, and it's really huge:

Feel free to visit it, it's awesome. Not exactly in the neighborhood, mind you.

Edit: IIRC, you drop in at 3300 ls from the main star.

my best guess is that they probably didn't generate them anywhere near earth. any stars this big would have been found in our Galaxy by astronomers unless they were on the far side blocked from view by the core. heck I think they find super-giants this big in other galaxies all the time. I wonder if they use the same parameters for there PG in each sector and just changed it up per region. or varied it by how far the sector was from earth.

3300LS dropout point sounds gigantic indeed... Will have to do a search for it nex time I'm in the game.. My current position is in the outer portion of the Core, heading inwards for a round of fun at SgrA*, (I'm going to drop off some booze there to turn it into "Supermassive Booze", then scoop it up agan.. :D ) .. after that I will roam the core aimlessly scanning pretty shiny objects. So if this is anywhere in the core I should pay it a visit.

It's on the western edge of the galaxy. Far west from Sol.

Betelgeuse was a fun stop on my first expiration trip. I did fly within spitting distance of Betelgeuse 1 but I had to turn off most of my modules to crawl out of that gravity well without overheating!

Just reached Betelgeuse system... WOW !!!

Took two pictures with my camera drone (^^), one from 3kLs and one from 21kLs... see that size !!!
Managed to surface scan Betelgeuse's nearest planet but was a bit scared... Temperature was rising (but not as much as i thought) but turbulence was quite strong, thought my Cobra was breaking apart :)
