Funny Pirate Story -- Must Read

Any actual pirate poses no danger to a trader if his demands are met. If the trader tries to kill a pirate after a pirate has sent him on his way, then yes the pirate can defend himself.

Stealing is a crime, but attempted murder is far worse, in just about any legal system.

Okay, understood! :D

Well, I'd much prefer to run into you and get robbed (or not) rather than one of those guys who blindly kill any other player at sight. Sadly, there aren't too many honorable pirates out there anymore...
Perhaps there could be something like an (inofficial) pirates guild, where members pledge to follow a certain sets of rules when pirating? Not sure if that would be helpful.

Agreed. The psychopaths ruin the whole experience because everybody thinks they are going to get murdered... even though I say "I'm NOT going to murder you".... which is exactly what a murderer would say before he murdered your face. It's depressing really.

Would love for a more indepth bounty hunting system... serial murderers would have MEGA bounties put on their heads... and they would not be told how much is on their head... they would simply be told "you are a most wanted criminal" with no amount shown. This would prevent "friend claiming"... of course... they'd still keep doing it and they wouldn't stop just because of a bounty. Iron man mode might help. Another topic for another thread I suppose.

I think friend claiming is already partially dealt with. When a wanted pilot dies, he pays the bounty himself. So if a friend does it, it's more like a form of credit transferral.

I also have a story about murder, I was in a Anarchy system and saw a viper and intercdicted him in my cobra, we had a battle and I knocked his shields out and he ran, managed to get his drives down to about 16% before he jumped and headed to a outpost I followed him in and stalked his pad, he launched was right behind him opened up and he took major damage and headed back to the outpost, at this stage I was indecisive about killing him or not, I boosted towards him he was nearly at the outpost I hit boost another two times and was at max speed and started shooting, I then realised I was going to fast and hit the boost button while trying to bank and clipped the side of the outpost, big BOOM and I was dead. It dosent always work out the way you want it, but its all good fun.

Real world example:
If some armed criminal decides to mug you in the street to rob your wallet and you decide to resist or even fight back* he has the right to "defend himself" and kill you?

*I'm not saying it's clever to do so.

This isn't an accurate metaphor. The robbery was over the victim left or was at least given the chance to, instead he decided to come back for revenge.

To use your own comparison, this would be like if an armed robber took your wallet and let you go. So you decide to double back to try and get even. While the cops probably won't look too kindly on him killing you, I doubt they'd like you killing him either.

Disagree;

The fact that you never know how the other commander will react or what will do is what really makes the difference. Should all the human pirates act the same, it will be predictable and repetitive. It is good to have pirates with moral as it is no have psychopaths, as you never know which one you will encounter.
As for me, as a trader, I’m not willing to find neither ”good” nor “bad” pirates, but the fact that it is possible makes my routes a lot more fun.

BTW very good story.

all pirates are psychopaths

^^ yes they are. You are interdicting them, stealing from them and you expect no retaliation pirates the lowest form of life in ED.

I love this story. As someone who loves an occasional bit of pirating I can imagine your shock at seeing the space wagon suddenly bloom before your eyes. I don't think I'd have shown the restraint you did though... pew pew!

I occasionally have people who think it would be fun to ram their ejected cargo. Usually I give them a few blasts of laser, and they skulk off again.

The funniest one was actually after a really good chase. Type-6 with no shields, submits & runs in the first interdiction, rattle him down to ~10%, but don't kill him because I want to grab him on the next interdiction. When I pop out to supercruise he's off charging his FSD to switch systems. I manage to tail him through three systems star flipping, next interdiction he submits, but this time my message is a fairly plain "drop x cargo or I'll blow you up". I tagged him with guns just to make sure he knew I was serious (~5% hull now). He stops, drops the cargo. Payday!

I go into scooping mode (4 pips systems, 2 engines, radar at long range to keep an eye on him) and start hoovering. Next thing I see is him baralling toward me on my rader. I quickly scoot out of the way, he ploughs through the cargo and... explodes! He was destroyed by his own cargo minefield. I kinda felt sorry for him: not nice to be robbed and then blow yourself up, and I'm pretty sure I left him with stuff still in his holds, but it was one of the funniest moments I've had in the game (the other being when I came out of interdiction and slammed straight into a Type-6... he didn't mean it, we were both still spinning). I still got most of the cargo, though some I had to grab quickly, as it was damanged.

Moral of the story: cargo hurts. 4% hull is not enough when you hit it at >200m/s. Shields are good.

My best ,and, one of the -very- few pirate encounters?
.
Right after having got myself a decent Lakon Type 6 freighter, I quickly stripped it of any non-Essentials ,put in the cargo-holds needed for maximum cargo-space.

My first five or so trips between Vequess, Cemiess and Delta Phoencis went well, though, it was at the latter system I ran into trouble. An angry Cobra pirate.

Was before I truly learned the trick of "following the blue tunnel" during interdictions, so I was torn out of FTL-mode and to be honest? -Truly- afraid. I had only just upgraded to the T6, (and made Upgrades to power-core, Hyperdrive++) so -really- didn't want to loose the cargo. This was before I knew you could jettison cargo to other Players, it was probably my first pvp fight as well. As luck would have it however, even pirates in Cobras have trouble staying on the tail of a T6 with booster (and energy to boost often), I would never have won the spinning-trying to get behind game if not, 'cause the T6 is -slooow- even with upgraded trusters.

Either way, as luck would have it, I had forgotten selling my two pulse-lasers. Though fighting cost me most my entire hull (13 percent) the pirate perished. It's the -one- true pvp fight I've had, and to be honest? It wasn't a pleasant situation.
Being a trader I'd rather make a profit per trip than paying more than the trade-profit in repair bills.
I could've afforded the insurance, but it would've left me with next to no money for new cargos

Wait... what? I need to create a thread on this... he pays the bounty on himself!?!?!?!

Pirates are thieves, and thieves are criminals. So while the story WAS fun to read, I would have enjoyed it more if the Lakon's kamikaze attempt had worked. I'll give the Lakon pilot a 10/10 for effort, though!

And this game becomes very boring without criminals, without thieves, without bad guys. So you are welcome for making the game more enjoyable.
