I had VR running butter smooth, then suddenly overnight it ran like crap. Stutters, blackouts, freezes - and the rift would say tracking error or even disconnect.

I tried all kinds of setting changes, even a PCIe USB card, nothing worked.

Then, someone recommended game mode. I had disabled the game bar, game DVR, etc - but unfortunately you can't enable/disable game mode without the game bar. For some stupid reason Microsoft didn't include that ability in the game control panel.

So, if you're having issues enable the game bar, launch the game and hit windows key + G to bring up the bar on your 2D monitor. Click the game mode button (next to last button on the right) if it doesn't have a circle with a slash through it indicating it's turned off. May save you some headaches.

Yes..... good call. Stupid Microsoft game mode!. It’s almost completely useless and even hampers games outside of Microsoft’s official game world.

i have seen several posts about the Game Mode but it never worked.

But this little gem of a note solved my jutter :)

+10 rep if I could.

It's really stupid that you can't just turn it off in the control panel, but have to launch the game bar. I think most people are under the assumption if you turn the game bar off, you turn game mode off but that's not the case.

Must try this as was noticing some jutter and skipping today that is not normal previously and just had to reload windows 10 last week so just getting everything back to normal.

so after a good 2 hours last night no more jutter missing frames etc, increased some of the settings to ultra, hmd 2.0 ss 0.75 and still no issues and looking good.

Logged in this morning straight and still all good as last night.

Typical MS removing global options.

I did find a post about setting a Regex to disable the Game Mode option but it was already set to 0 meaning it wasn't even using its own disable function.

I don't get it. The icon next to last button on the right is "Broadcast". Can you send screen grabs?

Read this yesterday and tried it. My game bar was off by default. Turned it on. Almost made ED unplayable. Turned if off. All good again.

Thanks so much.

Win button + G not bringing anything up for me not sure why. Any other way to get to the game bar?

Yeah same for me - I am pretty sick of this gamebar nonsense. I had a look in my WIN settings where there is settings for gamebar DVR stuff. It was all switched off, I think if it switched off then the WIN + G shortcut does not work.

Have had no problems so far. but do i understand it correctly, you have to turn it on first, launch Ed and then make sure it is turned off for ed, then turn itoff again?
This is fxxxxx MS logic lol

Yes, there is game bar, game DVR... etc.

You have to enable game bar, then when you hit win+g (or Xbox logo on an Xbox controller) it will appear on the monitor.

So I need to enable the DVR to get at the game bar then disable it from there? I looked in the registry and it is set to zero but that is probably just indicative of the fact I have it off in settings correct?

Yes my registry was 0 and I still needed to disable it from the game bar in ED. I think its a left over registry when you could disable it globally in the settings section which is now gone.

The best way to see if it will affect you and that is to go into the Windows 10 settings for "Game Mode".

Older version has this option : http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-3385026/enable-windows-game-mode.html

The newer version just says "This PC Supports Game Mode" which no option to disable. This is the one you need to disable Per Game.

Are you doing this everytime or setting it once for Elite and it keeps the setting?

You should only have to do it one time. It has stayed off since I disabled it, through both putting the computer to sleep, and turning it off.

It was either a windows update or an nVidia update that turned it back on for some reason. You can just keep game bar enabled for easy access, as far as I can tell the game bar itself doesn't cause much trouble.
