G2 plus 3090 stutter

Hello, I am noticing micro stutter when driving in the srv and on initial jump into systems.
Last time I played was about a year ago and that was with a 2080ti/ V1 reverb, didn't have this issue.
Any help would be appreciated. I have it locked at 45fps via steam vr setting forced reprojection.
I have tried the lowest settings all the way up to ultra, (stutter no matter what). While driving srv, "low vr" setting nets about 45% gpu usage
and "ultra" nets about 80% usage so the gpu isn't being overtaxed. Tried a different mouse for grins, rolled back the gfx driver. Tried game mode on and off, tried windows gpu scheduler on and off, HT on/off no luck, any ideas?

Update, I feel like this issue is a cpu thread problem. I currently have most of the graphics settings at high, aa af and ss off. While driving the SRV the GPU usage stays between 50 and 60%. I started paying closer attention to the frame rate and it was dipping below 45fps, usually only 44fps but occasionally I would see 40, 41 fps and the stutter gets really bad.

So we know the 3090 isn't being over taxed and the 9900k certainly shouldn't be either. So is it possible the bottle neck is a thread priority or count issue? I feel like the 9900k might be being limited to 2 threads as I saw the cpu usage hovering around 12%. 8c/16t cpu . = 16\100=6.25, 6.25x2= 12.5%

What drivers are you using? The 3xxx series cards were experiencing VR stutter prior to last month’s NVIDIA driver update.

I notice an open issue with the current drivers:

[Steam VR game]: Stuttering and lagging occur upon launching a game while any GPU hardware monitoring tool is running in the background. [3152190]

One more thing to check for?

I was using the latest one and I also tried one that was a couple of months old. Okay thanks guys I'll check that out too

Update, I did a full wipe. Reformatted everything with a fresh clean copy of win 10 pro. It fixed both issues, now its butter. Windows installed a 4 month old 456.71 driver by default, I might update to the latest but its fine now.

Probably not a good idea to update the drivers. I think it's a general performance issue with particularly the 3x cards so this should apply to ED too, but on the MSFS2020 forums it's strongly recommended to stay on older drivers (I'm using 457.30 with my 3080).

Certainly, when I play ED (also Reverb G2) it's really very smooth and very, very sharp.

Update, Well I might have spoken too soon. Now it is occasional.., so its not 100% gone but much better. When it starts to creep back in, now, usually a log in and out corrects it or sometimes it fades away on it's own.. its definitely better now as before nothing I did seemed to correct it.

I have 3080 had it for just a couple days. I was getting a lot of stutter around stars when jumping in. Seems like the type of star make a difference the controls can be very jitter and jumpy. I tried rolling back the driver and editing the WMR setting but it did not help that much. Seems like turning FX quality off helped a lot. I will try turning it low and see if there is a sweet spot. I am not really sure what FX quality is anyway.

Yeah could be just certain systems, its hard to nail down. I'm going to try the driver Faded Glory is using. btw are you using a g2 also and what about your cpu?

Yeah I have a G2 I miss typed, I have had the computer for a while Processor is a 10700. I was using an Quest 2 and it looked good and was buttery smooth, however I kept getting a washed out image on the bottom part of the screen only in elite D, it was fine everywhere else. Oculus support was not much help so I bought a G2.

The G2 does have a noticeably better image than the quest but not by a lot. I would have been happy with the quest if I did not have the image issue. I must say the oculus was smooth never a jitter or stutter even on Ultra in game. I hope I can get the G2 to run as smooth. I did roll back to the driver Faded Glory is using and it did not help that much. Still stuttered around some type stares.

You have a very similar system to mine then. :)

I have to say I've not noticed any stutter when arriving in systems (can't look right now as my G2 failed and I took the opportunity to send the PC back as my processor was running very hot in MSFS - not in ED).

I found ED to run very smoothly, perhaps I'm just comparing it (favorably) to MSFS which seems to make much higher demands, but I find ED looks really sharp, text is crystal clear, and it definitely feels very smooth to me everywhere, in stations, on planets and in combat. I've never really paid much attention to fps, so long as the game looks and feels good, so I may be getting less than 90, I don't know, but as I said, to my eyes it looks good and I get no inklings of nausea or jerkiness.

Might be worth having a look at your SteamVR settings? Again, I can't look at mine right now, but I think I have rendering set to 100 both in the global settings and also the specific ED settings.

I force reprojection in wmr driver settings and it locks me at 45fps. My GPU is always very low usage, usually 40 to 60% flying around, jumping into systems and landing at ports. Driving the SRV around crashed adaconda uses the most, about 60 -70%. Most settings are high/ultra with shadows being medium. Ss 1x, msaa off.

Flying and docking has been butter smooth but initial jump in I get an occasional stutter/jitter and driving the srv sometimes looks like frames are getting dropped too.

I wonder if wmr is the culprit.

Some more observations, after spending an hour driving around the srv farming minerals I have noticed the problem comes and goes. It should be noted that whether its studdering or smooth both the cpu and gpu usage stay well under fully utilized (~20 and ~50% respectively) and no noticeable change in usage is observed during studder events. When its smooth its rock steady at 45fps, when the studded starts it drops to 44fps and sometimes even 43-42fps. Now here is the odd part. When its going through one of its studdering episodes, simply clicking on another window (unfocusing the game window) clears up the studder! I know WTH!..

More testing and odd observations..

So I downloaded fpsVR and did some testing in some "low intensity" conflict zones. I decided to start with all graphics set to lowest or off, SS set at 1.0, testing both forced motionvector reprojection (45fps) and with it off (90fps).

First oddity, the gpu frame times stayed in the 6 to 8ms range regardless of 45 or 90fps. This frame time range was butter smooth the entire time.

The gpu % usage (like expected) nearly doubled from the 40s to 80s. When going from 45 to 90fps

Now, in both scenarios 45fps or 90fps the only time the frame times would go up is if you upped the graphics settings. Regardless of the frame rate, upping a particular setting would up the frame time the same amount and once you reach a certain frame time (around 10ms -11ms) frames start getting dropped and studder starts.

I'm now thinking ED doesn't play well with reprojection, I suspect the frame rate and or the gpu usage reported when in this mode and while playing ED is incorrectly represented. This might explain why I was seeing odd things like frame drops when cpu/gpu usage where still at supposedly reasonable levels.
