Galactic Map - Fuel Star

In the last couple weeks I have noticed the Galactic Map route plotter shows a Fuel Star when no refueling is necessary.

In the below example my ship will only use about 50% of its fuel to reach the final destination. Absolutely no need for refueling.

I thought the Fuel Star was the last possible star your ship could reach without refueling. I have never noticed it place an unnecessary fuel star on the route before. Is this new?

I'm actually not entirely sure now you ask but one could imagine that it highlights the last OBAFGKM star on your current route before you either run out of fuel OR get to your destination. I suppose the thinking behind the latter could be that if, for example, your destination is a tourist beacon from where you’re then going to plot another route (or even a system where you're going to need a lot of SCO fuel just to get to your target station) then it still wants to show you that last refuelling opportunity?

So you're (the OP) showing part of my current area of operation. I've run many missions to Haritanis and the surrounding area (Met 20, Momus Reach, etc.). I've noticed the Fuel Star symbol many times but I don't normally need them because all my ships (only 14 atm) have large Class A fuel scoops and some of the SCO equipped ones have a small gas can on board. However, I have pushed the limit and had to redirect to a suitable FOAM KGB system - the only way I can remember. OBA... throws my mind into chaos but I'm old and decrepit.

Acronyms really exploded 30 or 40 years ago to where everything is referred to with Letters ... before computers it wasn't so bad ... ASME, ANSI, OSHA, NFPA, were some of the few I needed to know; now its out of control. I had to do a lot of specification writing and we always had to spell out an acronym in words and put the letters in parenthesis the first time it appears in a document. These game forums (All of them) are so full of acronyms I don't know the meaning of, ... I'm lost half the time unless I stop and look it up ... sorry for the small rant
Have a great weekend

LOL ... I was gonna go with KGBFOAM originally but then I imagined this little forum voice in my head replying ..

"... I think you'll find that OBAFGKM is the more correct acronym for fuel stars since it uses the Morgan–Keenan classification system to list the star types from hottest to coolest"

.. and decided to preempt it! 😂

The route planner has shown fuel stars, even if not needed, along a route for ages hasn't it? I did find it a little odd that it was showing me when the ship had ample fuel to travel the entire route on one tanks. Perhaps it's there for when the planner makes mistakes? I mean, I've had the planner tell me I can do a particular route without refuelling at all and it's been very wrong about that. Not just slightly short, but systems short. These days, I'll generally just scoop any start that'll let me, unless it's a particularly short distance that I really needn't bother.

Balak is a brown dwarf star - ie non scoopable. The fuel star listed is the last star you can scoop from on your current plotted route.
That's the correct answer. The map doesn't show when you need fuel. It only shows when you can refuel. It's been that way since I started playing, roughly six years ago.

Ya, I see the pattern now. I'm not sure if its always been this way, I never noticed before.

If you plot a route within ship fuel range (more than one jump) and:

a) The destination IS a scoopable star -> the route shows no fuel star.
b) The destination IS NOT a scoopable star -> the route usually shows a fuel star (with a few exceptions).

It doesn't matter what the fuel range of the ship is or if you have a fuel scoop.

I find it weird I have never noticed this before.

I'm an experienced Fuel Rat. The "Fuel Star" marker is the most distant scoopable star on your current route, that you currently have fuel to reach.

Unless you filter the galaxy map for scoopable stars and include "Apply Filter to route" before plotting your route, galaxy map will make no attempt to include a scoopable star on your route (even if a suitable star could be in range if it tried).

The Solid/Dashed lines and the Fuel star flag will update dynamically if/as you refuel along your route.

A few notes, The calculation re solid/dashed lines and fuel star assume that your fuel reservoir tank does not recycle on the way. If it does, there is a chance that it would rob you of the fuel to get that far. Secondly, ther is a bug/feature/poor design (call it what you will) in galmap hereby "Apply filter to route" can go missing. This commonly happens on game login and also if you click on any filter button on Galmap (including the star class filter. Check "apply fillter to route when you log in and if you even snigg at any filters agter setting the star class filter!. Finally I recommend 12Ly jump range for the star class filtter (with apply filter to route set) to work

Actually what confuses me is that sometimes the "fuel star" text appears on the route and sometimes it doesn't (even when there are scoopable stars on the solid line). I wonder if it's buggy.
