Galactic Sector Map

I've been thinking that it'd be useful to create a representation of the galaxy based on its sectors.
This basis of the map is to assume that sectors are cuboids.

Step 1: Get Sector Coordinates
- Read all system entries in EDSM and get their name and x, y, z coordinates.
- Parse the list to recognize sector names - needs a little care because of the sectors like EOL THIS and EOL THAT, i.e. EOL is not a sector by itself.
- Obtain the minimum and maximum x, y, z values for a sector.
- Generate a .CSV output with this info.

Step 2: Generate a Galactic Sector Map
- Use the .CSV list as input for a 3D Tool.
- Each entry generates a cuboid in the appropriate position.
- Voila - galactic sector map.

OpenSCAD is a programmatic 3D Tool focused on static models rather than animations.
The code for drawing objects seems fairly simple:

e.g. Each Sector has a minX, minY, minZ, maxX, maxY, maxZ value.

The code to draw and label each cuboid is something like this:

What I haven't figured out yet is how to take the input list and go through it one entry at a time and generate its cuboid - need some help here, this doesn't seem obvious.

Colour is also an issue - ideally we want neighbouring and overlapping cubes to be different colours and also largely transparent.
We can easily pick an low alpha (A) value to get the desired transparency.
Maybe if we use random R,G,B to start with and hope for the best.
Not sure how the text gets positioned but it'll be in a fixed position so the same translation should move it relative to the cuboid.

I can probably figure out Step 2 by myself, it's Step 1 I need the most help with - any volunteers?

Then you can parse it, line by line.

Getting the sector name can be done by finding the first "word" with "-" in the name. Words before it will be the sector name. If there is none, then the system is manually placed and/or are from some star catalog.

When I was doing the major sector map - http://cim.sotl.org.uk/elite-dangerous/ - which doesn't include the positions of the non-procedural sectors (i.e. the ones which actually have "Sector" in their name) this was relatively straightforward by parsing the systemsWithCoordinates file Valije has linked - use a stream parser, because it's huge. I can stick the code I use for that up, if it would help you.

Note: the non-procedural sectors are generally not cuboids - they look more like spheres for the most part, though I've not checked closely - so calculating those might be a bit more interesting.

Definitely looks like you've already got the source data sorted out.
Your sector map is pretty much what I've got in mind as well, but a 3D version.

The tool can do spheres as well if there's a naming pattern we can use.
Just need to figure out how to establish a centre and radius.

Thought I'd try a little proof of concept first with some manual entries in the tool.

I hit the row limit in excel, so I ended up with about half the data from the .json
But that has given me enough to get pretty spot on info for the areas around the Pleiades.

Here it is from a distance:

The 4 big squares are Synuefai, Synuefe, Wredguia, and Wregoe.
The blue square in the middle is Col 285 Sector

Temporarily removing those we can get a closer look at the more immediate area:

I used a Black Sphere for the Pleiades Sector and cuboids for all other sectors for now.
I wouldn't mind seeing a point plotter tool to prove the shape of the smaller sectors or regions.
The opacity increases for smaller areas.

Here we have:
- Mel 22 Sector - Cyan
- Hyades Sector - Purple
- Taurus Dark Region - Brown
- Hind Sector - Yellow
- Arietis Sector - Green
- Aries Dark Region - Red
- Struve's Lost Sector - Dark Red

I managed to find a decent 3D Plot Tool so I was able to confirm that named 'Sectors' and 'Regions' are indeed spherical:

Based on that, the local Pleiades region looks a bit more like this:

I need to rethink how I place and size the spheres though.
Where regions overlap, they take big chunks out of each other.
For example, Struve's Lost Sector looks like this:

That bias means the method I was using to use the average x,y,z coordinates to determine the centre of the sphere will be quite inaccurate.
Not sure about my radius calc. either.

I think our tools might be (part of) what you want after all... They can tell you the name of every sector in the galaxy. (You'll need to ignore the main description on the site; the PG naming tools are a recent addition to a larger suite.)

I just re-ran our "main test" - throwing every system in EDSM at the tools and seeing if its predictions are correct. That test is starting to take a preeeeetty long time these days, but the results are similar to last time I ran it:

Total systems: 2456945
Total PG systems: 2406759
Correct: 2406693
Incorrect: 66

If it's anything like previous times, those 66 are probably wrong data in EDSM.

Anyway, as for step 1 (generating a CSV with all procedurally-generated sectors with cube coordinates) - this might be what you're after? The coords provided are the "bottom-near-left", i.e. all cubes are from (X, Y, Z) to (X+1280, Y+1280, Z+1280).

Thanks - that file is exactly what I'm after for the largest cubic sectors - I assume the 1280LY is so thoroughly confirmed now that I can take it for granted.

The sphere's for curated sectors do overlap in some areas. You'll find one takes precedence over the other, and will need to work out which by finding overlapping areas, and examining the EDSM data to see how sectors in those overlaps are named.

Interesting. Quick question, does the tool you use handles occlusion culling ?

Something similar has been thought about severals months ago already, and some practical constraints were raised for a proper usability of such a tool, from which : graphic load.

As of now, excluding all the "unique" sectors that are the bubble and custom sectors (like nebulaes ones), here would be the statistics for the entire scene that would need to be drawn :

- 49920 sectors, each drawn in single cubes, from which :
- 399360 vertices
- 299520 faces
- 599040 triangles

Back then I came with the idea of dynamically generating each cube from a single openGL shader that would only draw what needs to be shown on screen (which is called occlusion culling), so that several level of details could be added, such as :


- 'subcubes', or boxels, for each masscodes inside each sector (driven by a camera distance clipping)
- Including all the data from EDSM and draw every systems on the map as vertices, here driven both by occlusion culling and camera distance clipping.

Looking forward to see your ideas

Dammit - tool runs out of memory at 19000 sectors!!!
The end result is a little dubious for practical purposes.

Given that it appears that the galaxy is only 5 sectors thick, maybe 2D representations for each layer will be enough after all.

Think I'll stick to using it for more local purposes - the Pleiades Area map is quite useful to visualize the sectors, maybe I'll expand from there once I've figured out a better way to locate the centres of the spheres.

Data is in the format: system,x,y,z,radius
The coordinates are the center of the sphere. Note that some sectors have a radius of 0 - this is because EDSM only has 1 source. Also, I highly expect the actual x,y,z,radius figures to look a lot nicer - my suspicion is the coordinates will align to a multiple of 5, and ergo so will the radius. e.g., look how many of them have a radius 99.(something) - almost certainly actually 100. You'll still need to work out which sectors take preference in the case of overlaps though.

Think I'll stick to using it for more local purposes - the Pleiades Area map is quite useful to visualize the sectors, maybe I'll expand from there once I've figured out a better way to locate the centres of the spheres.

Sticking to the local area probably makes sense for now at least.

As for the hand-authored spheres, EDTS includes what seems to be a pretty extensive list of the sphere centres/radii... I'm afraid I have no idea how accurate the numbers are though; we were basically just thrown a link to a Google Docs spreadsheet a while back and figured someone's approximation was better than nothing.
Still, it's good enough that (once we figured out the ordering/override rules) it seems to get all the relevant systems in EDSM right, so it can't be that bad!

Data is in the format: system,x,y,z,radius
The coordinates are the center of the sphere. Note that some sectors have a radius of 0 - this is because EDSM only has 1 source. Also, I highly expect the actual x,y,z,radius figures to look a lot nicer - my suspicion is the coordinates will align to a multiple of 5, and ergo so will the radius. e.g., look how many of them have a radius 99.(something) - almost certainly actually 100. You'll still need to work out which sectors take preference in the case of overlaps though.

What's the basis for establishing the centres and radii?

I went with:
Sphere centre: using an average value for x,y,z
Sphere radius: half the maximum calculated height, width, or depth, based on comparing min and max x,y,z values.

My centre calculation is definitely flawed due to average bias when the sectors have massive chunks missing - e.g. plotting Hyades Sector systems gives you a hemisphere not a sphere.
