Newcomer / Intro Galaxy and System Map: How I'm looking forward to this!

Ha! Understood everything in the "Spoiler". Except got to work on lining up entry to mission target better.
Another thing.
Why would anyone choose to manually launch and dock when it can be done far safer in auto ?
Need those slots for other gubbins!
I've gone from auto, to manual, and now back to autodock, but that's just down to laziness on my part. :D
(Autodock = mug of tea time).

It's perfectly safe, faster, and just as easy to dock manually, plus you don't need to waste a slot on a module. Also just more fun.

Various reasons.
  • It can be fun in a small ship.
  • Needing the slot for other stuff.
  • Still don’t trust them as while they are no longer homicidal they can still mess up and get your ship destroyed by “accident”.
  • Play in Open and don’t want to be hassled by the <deleted> who attack ships with a Docking Computer.
Myself I have Advanced Docking Computers on some of my large ships.

OK ....... completed a number of Courier Mission successfully, so now a question about exploration.
I had hoped the Galaxy Map would be empty, allowing me (forcing me) to explore and discover all Galaxies and Systems for myself and steadily build up my own map. :)
But no. It's all there laid out for me. 😟 So what is there to explore ? Thanks

Hmmmmm ........ If I was in charge of any Station, no way would you be allowed to launch and dock manually. I can't believe it is as safe and can't be much quicker than auto, which is very quick. As for being fun ....... sorry ....... I'm here for serious business. 😉 This is all reality for me ..... sorry ...... it's just the way I want to "play" it.
If you can't trust them (I assume you mean the auto systems), then fix them so they don't manufacture accidents. Haven't we got Engineers for that ...... Again I'm sorry, I'm not here for fun.
I assume the "slot for other stuff" means the Auto Docking Module. is taking up a slot for maybe something others see as more valuable. Auto Launch/Dock would be mandatory for me ...... but that's me.
Yes. OK. Accept the risk of having one in OPEN. I'll just stick to SOLO. 😉

[ Oooh!...... now there some issues for discussion ....... :D ]

The stars and their locations have been known since the 20th century.

If you go into the galaxy map and click on a star system that you have visited there is an icon that lets you look at the system map, any star system you click on that doesn’t have that icon is unexplored as far as your navigational database is concerned so if you visit it you will be able to explore and discover all the bodies in that system for which you get an reward when you go to cartographics and sell the data so they can refine their database.
If you are the first commander to sell data on a system you will be credited as first discoverer and your name will appear when anyone else scans that system.

Think of the galaxy map as a map of Australia that shows the locations of all the towns and cities as a dot but to get the detail to turn it into a gazetteer you have to visit the cities and produce a streetmap, some of the biggest cities like Sydney are already mapped others like Gold Coast aren’t in your database but have been mapped by others, however 99% of them are waiting for you to be the first to discover them.

Is my database (map) different to other CMDR's maps, or am I just tapping it a single, universal map that is continually be updated?

It is a semi universal database, what is or isn't discovered is updated continually but the actual system maps you have to get yourself.

Just to take it further.
If I go to an unexplored part of the Galaxy, how much do I see on my Galaxy Map when I first arrive?
If I explore and document what I find and DON"T sell it, does that part of the Galaxy remain unexplored for others?
Thanks

Right. So why when I was completing a series of Courier missions was I able to see the galaxy's system map when I hadn't visited it before ..... or don't think I had? 🤔

The quicker I get there then, the happier I'll be. 😜

Edited: Quoted complete aRJay's post for accuracy.

There are no other galaxies - we have the one galaxy (the Milky Way).

You shouldn't edit words into other peoples' quoted text. I can assure you that aRJay would not say galaxies.

We have star systems that you hyperjump into. The clue that they are a system comes from the fact that they have system maps. (There can be more than one star in a star system - in fact the majority of systems I believe have multiple stars.)

As regards docking computers - that video I made still had the advanced version that cam with the ship and I left it in and used the auto-launch as I expected that anyone watching the video for information would be a newcomer who wants to use the auto launch. Normally I actually have a standard docking computer fitted - manually launching is much quicker and if I want speed on docking I just apply a bit of thrust and dock manually - usually I am lazy and let the DC dock me.

Theres only 1 Galaxy, The Milky Way, each 'main' Star has its own Star Sytem with different number and types of bodies, or just the Star. You will see the SysMap after you buy or visit with the bodies in them. Use the FSS to ID POIs and features and get more money. Use the DSS to map the planet and get even more detail and money.
As long as your on board computer has the info you will have explored it and it will be 'visible' to you whether you sell it or not. I think if you die it still shows visible but you lose all the extra info you had. Selling the info stores the info permanently. If on EDSM etc it will be stored there as soon as you visit.

Sorry ..... my mistake. I assume then, we are talking about other star systems.

Again sorry .....meant no harm. I was just trying to define the term "them" as I had only quoted part of aRJay's post. My mistake. Won't do again ....

That sounds to me, as though we agree on their (docking computers) value.

Thanks Vetinari. I've actually edit my original post to correct the "Galaxy error"
It now reads:
Just to take it further.

Youll see the whole Galaxy map at all times, every 'main' star in the Galaxy anyway, lots of filters to play with :)

So 'unexplored' can mean, nobody been to that region or sector, but we can still all see all the stars locations and jump ranges. Or it can mean actually visiting a Star System. Regions or areas of the galaxy are less visited but each 'named sector' has been visited....but if you look at heat maps :)

99+% of Star Systems are unvisited / unexplored by anybody. If you the first to find it you get our name on it. First to map gets another Tag, forever in game.

So the Galaxy (or stars in it) are always visible from everywhere for everyone at all times.
The Sytem Map is only available after visiting or buying.
Only the SysMap has objects you can tag, including the main star.

1st Discovered usually around 1K LY+ out from Sol, 1st mapped available within 300LY in the bubble but getting rarer, I found plenty 1st Map tags on the recent Halloween mystery and lots of players were in the area....Ive followed expeditions and found first disco and 1st map....theres plenty of stars for everyone, but the first is always special :)
