Galaxy Map in VR

I use an xbox controller just for the galaxy and system map. It's perfect for it. rotations are on the two analog sticks, and the shoulder pads are for zoom in/out and up/down.
Now... if Frontier added a virtual keyboard for the search box that would be great!

Thank you very much!!!! Mapping my galaxy map to my xbox controller was incredibly smooth, I can now plan routes for the first time, I can't tell you what a difference that made, I mapped pitch and and yaw zoom, rotation, system map etc. to my xbox one controller in options controls Galaxy map, It's so intuitive and took care of the mad flickering. I use my Logitech g940 for flight and open cockpit menus which is still a twitchy nightmare but It's getting the job done and works great in flight. I wonder if my twitchy controller buttons are due to my old and badly supported discontinued Logitech g940 HOTAS ?

also pitch is so important to target the next system your trying to jump to in Galaxy map. Just pitch up or down with your xbox one controller and put the circle around the destination your trying to jump to! when your circle is on this point you can plan your trip through the pop up window. Just don't plan your jump to far if your a noob like me, one small jump to the very next star system "if you have enough jump power and fuel capacity to get that far" sorry not the proper terminology. But it's all something like this :/

Just making sure.
But you can plot a course for just under 1000ly at a time using the plot button.

The pin icon is a select system, that also works as a single jump one.
The squiggle line with dots in it will plot a course depending on your ships range.
You can even go into a system map for a remote system, select any object (planet, station etc etc) and plot a course to it.
Same as without VR or any control method.

Did my first 2000 lightyears in the Rift. I had no problems at all, navigating through the galaxy.

I use a Thrustmaster Warthog. To navigate i have pitch and yaw on the analog stick, plane movement on the top right hat, zoom in /out and move up / down on the bottom right hat.
Selection and menu navigation is done with the 4 way + click thumb button on the stick and the lower left hat for moving between menus.

My layout (edited in)

Note: HMD recenter is now on space on the keyboard.

Works perfect for me, leaving the only problem to the search function, where a keyboard is needed. I have already bought myself a very small USB keyboard with integrated touch pad, so i dont need a mouse either.
The touchpad works nice in VR so far (havent used it for selecting stars though). As i can type completely blind, all problems will be solved, once i have found a decent way to mount the keyboard to my cockpit.

The keyboard itself is only 21.8 by 15.0 cm.

Yup! must be my Logitech g940 causing the problem but that's okay I'm' 44 and my father was cool to give me this HOTAS for free he is a flight sim guy from way back and x Canadian airforce, I can't wait to travel through space with him he has been a rift backer for a long time before myself and was the one who gave me the idea to play this game :). The Vive must be awesome in ED as well.

I use an Xbox 1 controller for the all the cockpit menus, Galaxy map, system map, route planning etc it works very well, the g940 feels great in flight. I just purchased voice attack and the Verity voice pack this should take care of having to use any of the twitchy buttons to launch jumps and other awkward flight tasks that can be very important in time related situations, this will also replace my need for an Xbox 1 controller potentially. As well I just love the idea of having my very own "Hal" from 2001: A Space odyssey to keep me company in the dark reaches. ED is really blowing my mind in VR
