Galaxy map in VR

I've just started with E : D in VR with my new Rift and I'm just loving it. Absolutely loving it. It is a technological marvel. I really think this is a killer app for VR; easily worth the price of entry on its own for me. Anyway, there is one problem I am having...

I cannot make heads or tails of how to navigate the galaxy map in VR. I've been sort of muddling through the map with a combination of mouse movement and typing in the system I want (and even some attempts at Voice Attack) but it's been a real pain to get it to select what I intend to. I've done some searching through threads and I've seen people suggest selecting star systems with a HOTAS but I'm not quite sure what this refers to; I'm using a HOTAS and I'm still having a lot of trouble. Thoughts, suggestions? How do you navigate the galaxy map in VR?

Don't use the mouse at all. Map x/y rotation to joystick, and x/y translation to a hat, or ministick if you have one. That leaves a couple more things, translation up/down (I set to throttle) and zoom (buttons or another hat). Map all those controls to your sticks, and simply use that to move around.

Also be aware, you cannot share keys with your UI controls, those need to be separate. Most default control schemes assume you can share them. Watch out for the UI tab left/right.

Never touch the mouse, it just makes things confusing.

Here is my Hotas/Oculus Setup regarding the Galaxy Map, which works quite well:

Mod edit:
fixed the image tags for you :)

How come you are not binding your hotas to the AXIS? A friend did what you did and ended up with the blue cursor ring moving waaaaay too fast to select anything - all of your axis are being bound to simple on / off binds! You need to expand the "[+]" on the left hand side, next to each axis bind and then move your stick - you can even set deadzones and reverse the axis if required.

Examples:
[+] Galaxy Cam Pitch Axis
[+] Galaxy Cam Yaw Axis
[+] Galaxy Cam Translate Y-Axis
[+] Galaxy Cam Translate X-Axis
[+] Galaxy Cam Translate Z-Axis
[+] Galaxy Cam Zoom Axis

If your HOTAS does not have enough axis for all of the above binds you then need to figure out which ones are more important to have slow precise control over. Personally I would choose

[+] Galaxy Cam Translate Y-Axis - Forward / back on your stick
[+] Galaxy Cam Translate X-Axis - Left / Right on your stick
[+] Galaxy Cam Pitch Axis - Twist stick left / right

Leaving you with a choice of using the throttle for either:
[+] Galaxy Cam Translate Z-Axis (moving vertically up or down) or [+] Galaxy Cam Yaw Axis (rotating left / right)

Whatever / whichever is then left over would need to be bound to a hat or button(s) unless you are lucky enough to have rudder pedals, which open up another two axis which can then be used for Galaxy Cam Yaw and Translate Z-Axis, unless of course you have another form of axis on your HOTAS such as rotary dials etc.

My Binds are as follows (Saitek X55 HOTAS + Slaw BF109 Rudder Pedals):

[+] Galaxy Cam Pitch Axis
HOTAS: Twist Stick Left / Right
[+] Galaxy Cam Translate Y-Axis
HOTAS: Push Stick Forward / Back
[+] Galaxy Cam Translate X-Axis
HOTAS: Push Stick Left / Right
[+] Galaxy Cam Yaw Axis
Rudder: Main Axis Left / Right
[+] Galaxy Cam Translate Z-Axis
Rudder: Combined Toe Break Axis* - Left Brake = Down - Right Brake = Up
[+] Galaxy Cam Zoom Axis
HOTAS: Buttons mapped - Axis Not Used

For anyone else looking for advice, the pic linked in the above post is how to NOT bind you HOTAS to the galaxy map. No offense raiseer, I know you were only trying to help..

* 2 separate axis combined using V-Joy & Universial Joystick Remapper.

Sweet setup! So now my navigation works but once I select a star I am still unable to use the options from my vr. I have to use my mouse to click on the different options available. Any help with that ?

Hang on, maybe all is not resolved after all... not that I have that set up whenever I move the joystick in the normal flight mode I hear the sounds from scrolling within the system map. Is that normal? Is there any way to get rid of it?

Gecii, with regard to your question the hat lets me select the options.

VR navigation in Galaxymap and System Map are notoriously underwhelming. Fortunately FD have promised to take a look at this for the next big update.

Glad you got the hang of it - its not easy in VR.

The mouse is still useful - just to look around in the Galaxy map, or get the view into the general vicinity of the intended system. Then I zoom in until the little system stalks show up on the grid, and select using the re-mapped controls.

If setup correctly there should be no reason to reach for your mouse in the Galaxy Map.

Tried a few different things now and I'm still hearing the map scrolling sounds in the regular piloting screen. I'm going to de-bind the HOTAS from the map until I can figure out how to get rid of the sounds.

just my 2 cents as yes at the moment the implementation of the Galaxy map in VR is a bit tricky to navigate.. However, wouldn't it be awesome if when you go to the galaxy map you got to use your vive controllers to move around the galaxy? You would feel like your floating above the whole galaxy.. just a thought.
