Galaxy Map is such a pain!

After 18 months I still cannot get to grips with the galaxy map. I see PC players whizz around the map without a care in the world, but it seems such a pain on Xbox and controller.

I find a system, and zoom in/out/pitch/yaw all over the shop trying to focus on the blue dot, that sometimes won't even appear or it does and then disappears. To the point I then just get hacked off and type the system name into the search box.

Any tips, or am I being proper dim?

Sorry no tips.. But this is why I do not play consoles at all. I can not get used the to the controllers and the number of buttons. I gave up after the introduction of the snes.

nope thats the fastest way... if you have usb keyboard its normaly just faster to type in a systems name... You can also type in an orbital station name thats in the system if you know it and its shorter than the system name...
The issue is they did not give console users the mouse cursor instead we spin the hole map every time... so the mouse over system that highlights systems was dumped on xbox
Yes if your using hotas or controller only then mouse over would be hard to add but All consoles now support mouse use in games so it can now be added...
Other consoles had touch pads built in but still ended up with out mouse pointer controlls... so its still faster some times to type in the name...

The blue dot you're referring to appears at only a given zoom level. If you zoom out it will disappear. I have no problems using the galaxy map with the controller, I think my eyes got used to the default perspective it uses. You can quickly change between vertical and horizontal movement with the X button, and just keep changing it and getting closer to the desired system until you can zoom in enough for the blue dots to appear, then you can lock onto it. It's not as fast as on PC obviously but I think they mapped it really well onto the controller.

I don't like the default controls much. Try mine:
These are all of my controls with every sub-menu expanded even if I don't use them. There are some things I don't have which you probably want, such as fighter orders and select highest threat. I think the controls are pretty much spot on for the galaxy map, external camera, FSS and so on. The alternate controls are specifically for landing.

Spoiler because huge images.

I use an elite controller and Microsoft keyboard attachment. I don't think galmap is difficult at all to use. I use left stick for camera pitch and yaw, right stick for x and y and use paddles for z. I use triggers for zoom. It's pretty much second nature to me now. Keyboard to type in systems.

I just want to say that Frontier implemented Xbox controllers pretty darn good for Elite. I can't believe I've bound so many commands to so few buttons. I love combinations. My only wish is if I roll could be separated and bound to the triggers.

I use the same devices. Elite controller (no pun intended) and Chatpad. It has to be said that for Elite it's a pretty useful tool.

Typing system names and communicating in-game with other CMDRs is extremely fast and easy with it.

Your not alone , but there is only so.much you can do with the limited xbox.controller . So much so in fact I've a good mind to go pc ... however . Frontier wont allow the transfer of assets from console to pc - only the cash equivalent. So all your hard works wasted.... unfair.imho I've put alot of effort into exploration since I got the xbox 2 Tb console . I'm not talking a few lytrs here eather .

I use a HOTAS One and it's taken me a long time to get a feel for it. I use the 'grid' to give me a reference on how to position the cursor

Have you tried plugging a basic USB mouse into the xbox? I have heard there is some basic support from the consoles. I have not tried it myself as I don't own an xbox and I play on pc. But sometimes even on pc, it can take a bit of fidgeting to get a system lined up right to work. Part of the problem is the "mouse over" switching. I wish it was on click only instead of mouse over. The system map can be so atrocious trying to get the right location and not have it suddenly change because the pointer moved over another planet or moon on your way to click the destination button.

I swap to mouse on the galaxy map. I don't know if that is an option on the xbox.
Having said that, the galaxy map does have problems with wide screen monitors.

I use a HOTAS with a usb keyboard. And while i do find moving around the map to be a pain, its a programmed movement kind of pain.
By that I mean, at least for me, its best to zoom out some and then move around, then rise or fall through the map, move some more, zoom in, and adjust. It can get really tedious and I would rather us a mouse for this.

Best option I found is using the keyboard and typing in the destination.

You cant be serious

The UI for gal map, sys map, and planet surface are all -poorly done. Someone at fdev must be in charge of crappy interface design, and they did those first.

I didn't even know you could get this for the abox one controllers. I used to have one for the 360. Does the headphone port do mic monitoring?
