Galaxy Map Problems

Been playing the game and it's been great so far. However, I've been splitting time between just normal PC monitor play and the oculus. Galaxy map in VR has been a problem for me.

I know where all the button presses are on the desktop version, but i'm having a hard time with the galaxy map on the oculus. Does any one have some setup tips on how to get this to work? I'm able to scroll & zoom the map in galaxy mode, but that's about all I can do. I can type a destination star, but then I'm not sure how to make the little "floating thingy" pop up so I can plot that star and set sail. It seems like there's a chunk of the UI missing for me. Also, I don't see the the 4 pointed blue-green receptacle I've seen in some videos.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Its a constant complaint.

I mapped the translation controls for the maps (left/right/up/down) onto a hat on my HOTAS joystick and throttle. Since the map controls don't affect your ship when you're in the system/galaxy map, you have the whole joystick/controller of your choice to choose from.

I find it easiest to get into the general ball park with the mouse. Many others here don't advise using the mouse, but I find I can scroll around with it and zoom into my general destination pretty easily (remember to keep your mouse movements small, as going off the window on your monitor screen makes the mouse cursor go awol).

Once you have your destination in view, tip the view to look from above, and zoom in until you get close - so you can see the small stalks and blue 'shadow' dots for each star on the grid.

Then you just have to use the key controls to pop the blue circle on the shadow spot of the star you want. Then the little plot route menu should show up. Don't move your head, or it will vanish!

Hope that helps - seems for everyone it's a bit different, and you'll find you own way that fits best.

Once I realized that the mouse won't work I mapped forward backward to the hat that does my forward backward thrusters, pitch to the joystick, yaw to the pedals/stick twist. Up down and zoom in/out to the up down thruster stick on the throttle. Once I played with it and got use to it, I find it's just as fast as with the mouse. I find when I'm not using VR, I still use the stick to navigate because I don't have to take my hands off.

There are lots of videos out there on how to map.

I've mapped all the controls to my X-52 HOTAS setup and it took about a week to get used to it so I can move around the galaxy map without thinking too much. However, I have problems finding the sweet spot where I can actually select the system I am pointing to. In other words, I can find the system I'm looking for but can not always get it to "click" to it, giving me the options menu. I have to zoom in/out, spin it around and go up and down the plane. Sometimes I can't manage at all and just type in the system name (typing blind is not a problem for me) which automatically snaps to the system. But yes, if they only fix that the "name plates" of system do NOT move with your head movements, I could use the mouse, even in VR/HOTAS to navigate the galaxy map. Hoping there will be some improvement in 2.2...

I also have the X52. I use the mouse for camera angles and broad movements (faster than the hat) around the map and the wheel for zoom. With the GRID on, put the star right on the grid elevation. I use the hat on the back of the throttle for fine movement left right forward back while zoomed in close. This allows me to lock a given star then select with the mouse. Everyone will have their own prefs, depending on setup but as you have found it is near impossible to lock a star with the mouse. The hat works great. Hope that helps

Oh I also found the hat on the throttle was already bound to x,y so I didn't have to even set up.

Thanks for all your help guys. The big part I was missing was turning on the grid. I had (incorrectly) assumed it was just lines .. but it's actually where the blue-green navigational element comes from. I was looking forever in the options for that, but couldn't find it. For my controls, I've got a x-56 and mapped the translation and rotation to the 2 little mini-sticks and I'm using the throttle top "" to zoom in and out. Other than needing the keyboard to type.. this should work fine.

Thanks again!
