Newcomer / Intro Galaxy Map - search for minor faction

Dunno what I'd do without EDDB, if I wanted to search all systems where Sirius Corp (for the permit) has a presence, I'd be scr**ed. Can anyone kick this up to the devs? Make minor factions searchable, searches filterable by controlling/presence/systems/stations, and the resulting list sortable by distance from current location, maybe with another filter for mission type?

No offense to EDDB, that database is awesome, wouldn't want to put them out of business, but alt-tabbing out of the game for some crucial info is not very fun. Trade tools, unexplored system info and such are well placed there :)

(erm, did anyone before my humble noob self think about this and maybe received an answer from the devs?)
Thanks

Yeah, woulda, coulda, shouda.
At the end of the day, ED can never provide as good an interface as a good old web page, or respond to users requests as fast as a 3rd party with 2 fingers to type and no big release process. More and more will almost certainly be added to the GalMap, but use EDDB and EDSM when you need to, they will always be better.

Have to agree with Dommarraa, here.
Although it would be really cool to have ALL info in game, there is and would be a trade-off between dev version of the available info and third-party, community driven one.

One person juggling 100 balls could look impressive, but a 100 people each juggling one ball will always be more efficient.

That being said, you don't NEED the third party tools anyway. (I never used them, except when I'm looking up info for somebody here in Newcomers). I think a bit of uncertainty adds to the game. IRL you also don't know everything. And looking up all the info on the internet changes your game from exploratory experience to taxi driving.

(as for your example of finding Sirius corp. - well, when I was in need of their services, I looked up Sirius on the map and tried a couple of systems in the vicinity and that was all I had to do. Far from being "screwed")

Personally I don't understand why people cannot accept that as in everyday normal life if you want to research a subject or answer a question then you use multiple sources to do so. In the days before Google I know I had many textbooks, reference books, a few dictionaries and thesaurus all put to use from time to time (OK I still have them they just are a bit dusty in the main ;) ). In the future would the lone spacefarer not resort to a future version of our internet? Is it just the fact that there isn't a web browser in the cockpit to cover queries not answered in the codex etc?

BTW - What about before the codex was introduced? How about trading before the game's market tools?

:)

"Information Handling and Brokering" - one of the weakest points of the Game since its release. Often discussed and subject of hundreds of ignored Suggestions.
From "Galactic Equipment Lottery" already noted in pre-release Beta to Ship availability, now to Commodity prices/markets or anything related Engineering requirements or Guardian unlocks - all the way to UC being a black hole buying anything but basically never being a Service Provider selling anything.

I guess we'll have to accept that in the year 3300, all knowledge about public Data Access and Networking from the 20th century is still lost.

Suggestion (Codex or Galaxy Map) :
  • search Factions, highlight presence and Control Systems in Map, Visualize Influence and Faction States, display of and Filters for Historical Data
  • search {anything}, smart System identifies search string and displays relevant Information with powerful Visualization and relevant Filters
  • search {own Database} for all known locations, be it markets or Mining Hotspots or isolated Commodities or best prices or availability of Ships or any Equipment

It's doable... but FDev would have to make it happen. Costs Resources. So it isn't happening.
We make tiny baby steps forward in the past but are still a long way off where things would start to make sense and be really useful.

FD seem to think that players should not be given simple, easy-to-use tools to find all the locations for Sirius Corp, for example. Apparently you are supposed to stumble upon them as you fly about the galaxy, then remember where you stumbled upon them the next time you need to find them.

Consider this: they have added a "find my faction" tool for Squadrons, but only if the squadron is directly affiliated with a faction. I can't see it being all that hard to expand that tool to make it generally available, for every player, and to use it to search for any and every faction (which would be clearly useful for the general player, for example in handing in bounties without copping a 25% loss at the IF), but they have chosen not to do so. It seems that the intended gameplay for a lone wolf player is that they're not supposed to be given a complete list of a faction's locations.

I get the impression that FD are happy for players to fill in those gaps with third-party tools. We have an existing internet, you can't play without an internet connection, internet browsing devices are almost universal, and there are people out there who live to create mods/tools, so why re-invent the wheel. Whatever tools they added into the game, people would almost certainly invent better versions of them which people would use instead.

Having said that though, never say never, ask and you may one day receive. :)
