Newcomer / Intro Galaxy Map: Solid vs Dotted Lines?

Silly question that a simple search wasn't giving answers to, and I've never seen it before: what's the difference between solid and yellow lines in the galaxy map? I had to plot a long, round-about course for a system because my Viper (with a 3C FSD) couldn't make the jump normally, but I'm not sure why the route line changes halfway through. Anyone know?

Dotted represents when you run out of fuel - in other words, you can make the jumps, none are too large for your FSD, but you can't do it on one tank.

Ahh great, thanks! Yea I'm about halfway through my jumps right now, on the dotted line, and have been fine as long as I ring each star a few times before jumping out again. Many thanks!

FaolGlas is spot on. Discovered this the hard way.

TIP: make sure that there's a station close to the jump-in point in the last system before the line changes from solid to dashed, and that the last system on your solid line path is not an empty, unexplored death trap that you're going to get stuck in without fuel. Or have a functioning Fuel Scoop installed, and check that the star/s in that system can be scooped from.

I discovered this the hard way last night with no system in reach to jump to for a refuel either....

How excactly can you tell if a star/s in a particular system can be scooped from?
sorry noob quistion but better ask first than fail loose my exp Viper lol

Check the system information in the Galaxy Map, if you can. Not all star types can have fuel scooped from them, the ones that can are:

A, B, F, G, K, M, O

The ones that cannot are: L, T, TTS, Y
