Galaxy Map Tips

I'm quite new to VR in Elite and I'm finding it almost impossible to navigate and use the galaxy map.
Ive setup various axis's on my hotas to move around the map but it's really difficult to select a star to (for instance) plot a route. i can get the star hovering right in front of me but them i can't seem to be able to select it with my mouse and if i want to search for a particular destination i have to take off the headset to type in the search box.

I must be missing something, have you guys got any tips for how to work with what is for me a bewildering mess ?

I don't know if it will help or not but I wrote up what I learned about using a HOTAS in VR over here (in the "Bad" section) ...

Edit: One other thing worth adding is that you need to concentrate on the pale blue disc that appears at the bottom of the stalk (on the grid) underneath the star you're trying to navigate to rather than the star itself. That's the thing you need to aim to get your targeting circle onto.

Really no need to struggle, my setup is as follows:-

Forward and backward - throttle
Left and right - paddles on throttle
Pitch up and down - stick
Up and down - hat

To centre over a system pitch down (reverse controls) so the system is directly below, then simply use 2d plane with left/right paddles and forward/back throttle to centre it.

I find this very quick and intuitive

Similar for me:
left/right/forward/backword, hat on hotas.
pitch up/down, x-axis
rotate left/right, y-axis
move up/down, another hat on my hotas, but any two close buttons will do.
select, button on hotas (in my case a button on my throttle).

Similar for me:
left/right/forward/backword, hat on hotas.

Don't you find that if you simply map the HOTAS hat stick for galaxy map movement that you then lose the ability to change the selection in the little menu that pops up next to the targeted system?
