Newcomer / Intro Galaxy size

Is the galaxy already full size (400 billion stars) or is that planned in future updates? I'm new (started 4 days ago or so, been mostly grinding enough money to get upgrades, haven't explored much) but quickly zoomed out and seemed like the galaxy wasn't that big, tho it may have been faded out to keep from lag. Sorry if this has been asked already!

The galaxy is allready at full sice now and I think it's a pretty big one at that, I spend 6 hours yesterday on my first little tryout exploration tour to a nearby nebular to see a couple of black holes and the view of a nebular background when flying around the systems there and I only about 3-400 LY away from populated space systems....

Galaxy actually isn't full size, recent discoveries indicate that the Milky Way may be 50% larger than previously estimated.

That may be true but the milkyway doesn't have 400 billion stars it only has about 200 billion of them so the game has created some additional star system in order for us to be able to jump from system without having to upgrade our ships to be able to jump up to like 50 LY in one jump...

You sound very certain of something that has a range of estimates from 100-400 billion.

havent you noticed that some of the system have real names and some of them just have some homemade letters/numbers combination which is not being used when those astrominors give naves to suns and other atronomical bodies....

actually I read somewhere here on the forum from some guys who is way into astronomi than I am whitch kind of names in the game was real stars and whitch were just made up and implimented so that we didn't get stuck because of too much distance between real stars in our gallaxy....

"Small" areas of the galaxy are currently locked out with unavailable permits, the stars are there, but you cant get to them, so there is room for "expansion".

That's because we haven't cataloged every star in the galaxy. This is literally impossible currently because most of the stars are obfuscated from our PoV on Earth. The largest catalog of stars only has about 1 billion entries and actual info on less than 500 million. The star counts are just estimates based on extrapolation and that ranges between 100-400 billion.

As for the game, yes, FD likely implemented an algorithm into their design for the procedurally generated systems so that they would be within jump range.

I also haven't heard anyone saying an exact number of stars in our galaxy but I also never heard the estimate 100-400 billion I only heard people saying ca. 200 billion that is why I used that number because it really doesn't matter since we proberly never gonna know for sure... ;)

And OP also asked if the game galaxy was complete or not.. and my point was just that as far as I know it is.....
I'm not qualyfied to actually discuss the number or type of stars since I haven't ever studied it so it only what I remember real astronoms saying on TV or reading from magazines... ;-)

The numbers get even more blurry concidering some sources say there are X stars, other say there are Y star-systems..

Maybe. There was a press release recently that highlighted one study based on the Sloan Digital Survey, but I think it is still too early to know if that is backed up by other studies and other datasets.

The stellar density is represented fairly well, as far as I know. As you get outside of the local bubble you will run into more and more stars that are procedurally generated and not taken from actual surveys and such, simply because we can't actually observe each individual star in the galaxy.

LHS, LTTS, HIP, and prefixes like that indicate the basic information was taken from a real-life survey. But even in those cases, they are estimating some of the distances and such.

Only 400 billion? I demand a Local Group expansion! Add the Andromeda Galaxy & the Magellanic Clouds.

They are already in the game... we can see them in the Galaxy Map. :)

It's that big :) Once you start to do some exploring, you'll get it.

There are well over 100,000 catalogued stars in the game, ranging from nearby bodies to distant, iconic ones. Most of the really well-known stellar bodies and nebulae are present. These all have either traditional names or real-world catalogue names. Filling out the space between them are the procedurally generated star systems, which have "Elite catalogue" names like SYNOFIE 12-E 46-F or PLEIADES SECTOR 23-7 45-X. They always follow that pattern and have been placed for best fit so that travel is possible. The positioning is for game purposes, but is also extrapolated from real-world data where it is known, so it's not just a random spray of systems.

All things considered, it's not a bad attempt at a model of the galaxy as we currently understand it, given that it is intended as a game board, and not a 100% accurate simulation.

There are able 150,000 "named" systems which are hand crafted and put in by FDev. Ones with established names like Sol, Betelgeuse, Antares and so on. There are a number of star catalogue entries included and these are usually preceded by LHS, HD, HIP, GSC, TYC or 2MASS.

The rest are procedurally generated and follow a naming convention of [Sector name] AA-A Axxx, where sector name is a region, the A's indicate letters, the x's indicate numbers.
eg. Traikeou AA-A h1 is a valid address and I think that's a nebula off in the direction of left of the Galaxy Map

this is quite fascinating and exciting. I'd say its quite impressive with what appears to be so much work put into the sheer size of the galaxy. The fact that they tried to make it based off known stars names, distances, etc is even better (rather than star1, star2, star3, etc).
