GALNET - 09 APR 3307 - Imperial Senator Visits Marlinist Colonies

Senator Lorcan Scordato has visited the Marlinist Colonies on a fact-finding mission as part of the Empire’s anti-terrorism operations.

The Imperial Herald was permitted to publish this summary of his preliminary report:

“Considering their recent refugee status, the Marlinist communities are remarkably well-organised. Their government works along republican lines but they have not abandoned Imperial culture, with many feeling homesick for their original worlds.”

“However, their situation remains precarious, with three of their eight systems now under the control of external factions. Without increased support from the galactic community, further losses may be unavoidable.”

“Regarding the NMLA, there is widespread anger that they have made all Marlinists look like monsters. Only rarely did I sense guarded approval, with the vast majority openly condemning the terrorists.”

“The Marlinist Parliament is small but efficient, containing a spectrum of viewpoints. First Minister Fairfax is focused on cohesion and survival, Amrita Ross discussed future reintegration with the Empire, while Aaron Whyte sees Neo-Marlinism as a valid political movement if violence can be avoided.”

“Months ago these were ordinary Imperial citizens, and our shared history still binds us. Generally, I feel that the Marlinist Colonies are closer to allies than enemies in our war against the NMLA.”

Oh look! A democracy that practices Imperial Slavery! I approve of that message and challenge the Federation to adopt this model of social wellfare. 🧐

I am disappointed with how this visit turned out, I was hoping this senatro had a more purposeful visit, arriving in something like this:

Without official Community Goal to drive external factions out of those systems, community can't be bothered to do anything while part of that community in form of player factions has motivation to keep those systems in their grasp. On the other hand I'm afraid that this might be an excuse for Empire to organize CG like that and if succesfull, taking control of those systems itself, disguising it as liberation and protection.

Similar to what the Alliance did with WHN?

Well, at least the two Imperial incursions (one of which was about to gain control) were repelled. I guess that would have been more objectionable than Fed takeovers, given that these are Imperial rebels.

'Imperial culture' does not necessarily equal Imp Slavery...although they havent specified one way or the other which seems a bit odd as thats the one big divider in the playerbase. Ive already helped the slavers this week already please dont tell me Ive been helping other slavers for months without realising it :)

I thought they meant stuff like Tea and scones at 3pm promptly in correct attire and change for Dinner with Black Tie....

Overall though, looking good, finally agreement that NMLA are terrorists and Marlinists are normal people who dont want an unelected 'King' or 'Queen' in charge whatever they are called and want a say in their own future. At some point you have to stop shooting and start talking.

And yes, good to see recent events being mentioned, player factions taking over new 'lore' created systems seen as a threat and not a good thing.

p.s. someone needs to nudge the Hesperus thread tomorrow if a new GalNet thread, I almost missed this one and eventually found it on p3 of whats new :)

Have you read the elite wikia?

you say tomato and I say tomayto

All I know is that if Im in debt Ill work extra hours to pay it off, not work for free for X years and then have no house left coz I couldnt pay the mortgage and now have nowhere to live and no credits to buy food today or tomorrow, meaning I almost certainly have to indenture myself again just to survive, and this goes on and on forever until I can no longer work and who looks after me in retirement?

I prefer the freedom to blaze my own trail and pay my own debts than working and having nothing to show for it at the end of the day and no means to support myself and no choices left. And I wouldn't be at the lowest stratum of the Imperial social hierarchy either.

Just give em a Sidewinder on loan and make them go mining, thats punishment enough for anybody and they can pay off their debts easily and far quicker....but it would mean you have to open your own curtains and cook your own food and work your own mines far away from the Sun...and probably mean you werent at the top of the stratum looking down on others either....

P.S. In other news youll be glad to hear the NM:LA top 10% supporters got their missile rack anyway.

And if you were an imperial, and had a house, you would sell it to pay off your debt, so your argument is moot. Imperial slavery is only for those with no other means to pay off their debt, and is voluntary, as in bankrupt imperial citizens voluntarily sign themselves up for a period of "slavery" to pay off their debts.

meaning I almost certainly have to indenture myself again just to survive, and this goes on and on forever until I can no longer work and who looks after me in retirement?
Or after your slavery, you could simply, you know, get a job? Like it says in the wiki:
WIKI: Upon concluding their contract, Imperial Slaves are given new employment and temporary welfare assistance by a registered organisation to help them re-acclimatize to citizenship.

I prefer the freedom to blaze my own trail and pay my own debts
And so does anyone, however if they are unable to pay their debts rather than simply default, they "enslave" themselves.
WIKI: Imperial Slaves voluntarily contract themselves out for a predetermined amount of time to earn money to pay debts that they could not otherwise clear

than working and having nothing to show for it at the end of the day and no means to support myself and no choices left. And I wouldn't be at the lowest stratum of the Imperial social hierarchy either.
IF you actually READ the description in the wikia pages you will see that you have MORE choices as an imperial slave, it's part of the constitution of the agency that regulates imperial slavery that they train the incoming slaves in new skills at facilities such as the one in Lagerkvist Gateway in the Synteini system.
Just give em a Sidewinder on loan and make them go mining, thats punishment enough for anybody and they can pay off their debts easily and far quicker....
If you could afford a sidewinder, you wouldn't be in the market to sign up for a spell in slavery. If you didn't have your pilots license from the PF, replete with freewinder, how would you pay off debts of millions of credits? And if you were up to your eyeballs in debt, could you afford the PF admission and training?
but it would mean you have to open your own curtains and cook your own food and work your own mines far away from the Sun...and probably mean you werent at the top of the stratum looking down on others either....
If you are referring to me personally, I'm just a glorified soldier, so none of that applies to me as I'm not that domesticated. However, were I that domesticated, you can rest assured that my domestic staff would better paid, and cared for than the typical blue collar / unemployed federal citizen,:
WIKI: treatment of Imperial Slaves is strictly regulated by Imperial law, and they are entitled to various rights and protections
WIKI: Imperial Slaves are often better cared for and rewarded than their free, working-class counterparts in the Federation.
